Interfacial Adsorption and Corrosion Inhibition Behavior of Environmentally Friendly Imidazole Derivatives for Copper in the Marine Environment

Imidazolium-Based Polymeric Ionic Liquids with Short Alkyl Chains as Green Corrosion Inhibitors for Mild Steel in 1 M HCl: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

A novel polymeric ionic liquid (PDBA-IL-NH2) using imidazolium ionic liquids with short alkyl chains as monomers and two control ionic liquids (PDBA-IL-OH and PIL-NH2) were synthesized. Their inhibition properties and mechanisms were explored via surface analysis, weight loss tests, electrochemical studies, and adsorption isotherm analysis. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (CIE) of PDBA-IL-NH2 gradually increased with increasing concentration, and the largest efficiency was 94.67% at 100 ppm. At the same concentration (50 ppm), the corrosion inhibition abilities of inhibitors were in the order of PDBA-IL-NH2 > PDBA-IL-OH > PIL-NH2 > IL-NH2. Based on the experimental investigation, the synergistic effect of electrostatic interaction, protonation, and electron donor-acceptor interaction facilitated the intensive entanglement and coverage of PDBA-IL-NH2 with the reticulated form on the metal, and the generated densest films protected the metal from the corrosive media. Ultimately, the theoretical results of molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical study were in high agreement with the experimental data, which confirmed the proposed inhibition mechanisms on the microscopic scale. This study contributed valuable perspectives to the design of efficient and ecofriendly corrosion inhibitors.

Integrating experimental and theoretical studies in the development of a novel alginate-based bio-composite for copper anticorrosion in 3.5 % NaCl environments

The development of new coatings based on a biopolymer, epichlorohydrin-modified alginate, and alginate-epichlorohydrin-SrTiO3 nanocomposites incorporating SrTiO3 (STO) nanoparticles in the alginate (Alg) matrix (Alg-Ep-STO), has been addressed in this study. Various characterization techniques were employed to analyze the prepared compounds, including X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as surface analysis methods such as Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarisation (PDP) methods were used to evaluate corrosion inhibition and protection durability. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of STO nanoparticles into the alginate matrix with epichlorohydrin significantly improved the metal's resistance to corrosion. The experimental findings received reinforcement from various computational methods, including density functional theory (DFT), Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, which were employed to investigate the interactions between the Alg-Ep-STO nanocomposite and the copper surface. The computational outcomes revealed that the Alg-Ep-STO nanocomposite exhibits robust adhesion to the copper surface, maintaining a flat orientation, with its alignment being notably influenced by the presence of STO nanoparticles.

Frontiers and advances in N-heterocycle compounds as corrosion inhibitors in acid medium: Recent advances

The acid solution is widely used in chemical cleaning, oil well acidifying, and other fields, which also brings the problem of metal corrosion that cannot be underestimated. However, adding an inhibitor is one of the most convenient and effective ways to slow down metal corrosion. N-heterocyclic compounds with high stability and durability, in line with the strategy of sustainable development, have been widely studied in an acidic environment. Imidazole, pyridine, and quinoline compounds, as the most commonly used corrosion inhibitors, can form a compact protective film via π electron cloud shifting towards the N atoms to generate coordination function. In particular, flexible modifiability makes N-heterocyclic compounds adapt to different corrosion environments readily, conducive to the formation of chemical bonds between compounds with metal surfaces to be better adsorption, so as to avoid the blemish of traditional inhibitors (such as inorganic salt and organic amines inhibitors) due to excessive usage, surface roughness of metal or environmental factor (for instance, temperature, pH and metallic) causing loose bonding between film and metal surface. More importantly, the efficient corrosion inhibition and toxicity of N-heterocyclic compounds have close to do with their own functional groups. Combined with the latest research achievement, the effects of different substituents on the corrosion inhibition and corrosion inhibition mechanisms were systematically reviewed in the acid-corrosive solution of imidazole, pyridine, and quinoline and their derivatives in this review article, respectively. In addition, the application and function of density functional theory in predicting the corrosion inhibition effect of corrosion inhibitors are also discussed. The future development trend was prospected according to the summarized research results.

Insight into the Corrosion Inhibition Mechanism of Sodium Silicate on the Magnesium Alloy Surface: Experimental and Theoretical Calculations

The corrosion inhibition mechanism of sodium silicate (SS) for WE43 magnesium alloy in NaCl solution was investigated by in situ observation, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), electrochemical test, and theoretical calculations. In situ observation showed that local corrosion was markedly inhibited after the addition of the SS inhibitor. Electrochemical data revealed that a protective layer was formed on the metal/solution interface and an optimum inhibition efficiency of 98.3% in the case of 2.5 g/L SS. A uniform magnesium silicate layer with a thickness of ∼2 μm formed on the uncorroded area was confirmed. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that SiO32- could absorb on the MgO (1 0 0) surface in a parallel orientation through the coordinate bonds between the O and Mg atoms. The distances of Mg-O bonds are 2.052 and 2.249 Å, suggesting that they are coordinated. The adsorption/interaction mechanisms of SiO32- were also analyzed through charge density distribution and atomic densities. Molecular dynamics simulations further confirmed that a uniform SiO32- layer was absorbed on the MgO surface. In the local corroded area, free SiO32- would react with Mg2+ and OH- produced by corrosion to form the insoluble magnesium silicate compound, which hindered the spread of corrosion.

Unusual Increasing Viscoelasticity of Wormlike Micelles Composed of Imidazolium Gemini Surfactants with Temperature

The viscoelasticity of wormlike micelles composed of ionic surfactants typically shows an exponential decrease with increasing temperature, which limits their application in relatively high-temperature (>90.0 °C) oilfields and the synthesis of functional materials as supramolecular templates at high temperatures. In this work, a series of imidazolium gemini surfactants, 1,9-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(3-alkyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) bromide ([C_n-2-C_nim]Br₂, n = 12, 14, 16, 18, 20), were synthesized. Their surface activities and aggregation behaviors in water were studied by electrical conductivity, rheology, polarization optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, ζ potential, and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. [C₁₂-2-C₁₂im]Br₂ and [C₁₄-2-C₁₄im]Br₂ mainly precipitate in water. [C_n-2-C_nim]Br₂ (n = 16, 18, 20) forms lamellar liquid crystals over a large range of concentrations at low temperatures. With the increase of temperature, the lamellar liquid crystals transit to wormlike micelles. Interestingly, the viscoelasticity of the three wormlike micelles first increases to the maximum and then decreases with increasing temperature. These wormlike micelles without additives retain high viscoelasticity up to 90.0 °C or above. With the increase of the alkyl chain length of the surfactants, the transition temperature of lamellar liquid crystal to wormlike micelles and the disintegration temperature of wormlike micelles increase. The unusual increase of the viscoelasticity of wormlike micelles was due to the desorption of weakly bound counterions and the extension of the long hydrophobic chains of surfactants at high temperatures.
