Synergistic Enhancement on Ignition and Combustion Properties of Boron via Viton Core-Shell Coating

The high gravimetric (58.74 kJ/g) and volumetric (137.45 kJ/cm3) heat values loaded in boron (B) offer significant potential for application in solid propellants and explosives. However, the high melting (2076 °C) and boiling (3927 °C) points of boron powder and the low melting point (450 °C) of oxidation products affect the energy performance and application of boron. Fluorine-containing polymers have high oxidation potential and excellent mechanical properties and can produce expectant gaseous products through the combustion reaction with boron oxide, but research examining the interaction between purified boron powder and fluoropolymers and the optimal selection of the fluoropolymer remains scarce. Herein, the binding energy between typical fluoropolymers [Viton, polyvinylidene fluoride, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene), and vinylidene fluoride] and boron was calculated via molecular dynamics simulations, which shows that Viton is an appropriate candidate for coating boron powder. In the experiment, The Bw@Viton core-shell composites were prepared using Viton as the coating layer, and boron powder was pre-purified with acetonitrile. Its structure, thermal properties, ignition, and combustion characteristics were then characterized. The results revealed successful removal of the oxide layer, and the hydrophobicity was significantly improved after Viton coating. Purification and coating synergistically enhance the energy release of boron powder, and the composites demonstrated excellent thermal, ignition, and combustion performances. In particular, the heat of oxidation and heat of combustion were increased by 26.6 and 32.7%, respectively. The ignition delay time was reduced by 53.2% compared to raw boron. A prospective reaction mechanism between boron and Viton is thus proposed.

Eco-Friendly Sustainable and Responsive High-Performance Benzotriazole-Metal Organic Frameworks/Silica Composite Coating with Active/Passive Corrosion Protection on Copper

Coatings with only passive protection cannot offer long-term anticorrosion on metals. Eco-friendly sustainable and responsive coating for active/passive corrosion protection is desirable to extend the service life of metals. Here, benzotriazole (BTA)-metal organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs, UiO-66) were embedded in silica (SiO2) coating by one-step electrodeposition on copper. Combined with passive capability of MOFs and active protection of BTA inhibitor, the composite coating (BTA-MOF/SiO2) exhibited high and stable corrosion resistance, confirmed by microstructure characterizations and electrochemical tests. As a result, the as-prepared composite coating exhibited superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 154.2°. With loading of BTA-MOF in SiO2 coating, the impedance modulus at 0.01 Hz increased by ∼10-fold and the corrosion current density decreased to 3.472 × 10-9 A·cm-2. Immersion and salt spray tests confirmed the long-term protection of the composite coating. The responsive release of BTA inhibitor endows the coating with a responsively anticorrosive behavior. The active-passive ability makes the coating a good candidate for protection on metals used in highly salty environments.

Molecular dynamics simulation and performance analysis of polyimide/aramid blends

CONTEXT

Polyimide (PI) and aramid, as functional polymer materials, have significant application prospects in special fields such as fire prevention and arc resistance. Blends of materials can not only improve the physical and chemical properties of a single material, but also save costs, so in order to improve the performance of polyimide, it is of great practical importance to study the properties of PI and aramid blends. Molecular dynamics simulation results showed that the two materials are compatible. The solubility parameters of PI tend to stabilize when the polymerization degree exceeded 10; aramid-1313 and aramid-1414 tend to stabilize at polymerization degrees of 10 and 15 or more, respectively. On this basis, the binding energy, diffusion coefficient, and mechanical properties of PI/aramid-1313 and PI/aramid-1414 blends with different mass ratios were analyzed. It was found that with the continuous increase of aramid content, the binding energy of the blends continue to improve, limiting the gas molecules diffusion ability. The mechanical properties of the materials also continue to improve. The simulation results provided in this paper can provide theoretical guidance for experiments on PI blends and shorten the research time and cost.

METHODS

To investigate the properties of PI and aramid blends, the PI/aramid composite system models were constructed using the Amorphous Cell module in Materials Studio software. Subsequently, molecular dynamics simulations of the PI/aramid composite system were performed using the Forcite module, while the interactions between atoms and molecules were described using the COMPASS II force field.
