Effect of clay-zwitterionic interactions in controlling the viscoelastic properties in organomodified clays

Investigating the rheology of 2D materials such as clays is of growing interest in various applications as it dictates their flowability and structural stability. Clay minerals present unique rheological properties, especially when in suspension. This study explores the effect of functionalizing bentonite clay with betaines of variable carbon chain lengths on the rheological properties of clay slurries to analyze their interactions in suspension. The results show that these zwitterion-functionalized clays exhibit higher viscosity, storage moduli, and flow stresses due to the formation of three-dimensional networks and increased aggregation caused by intercalation. The structural properties of the clay slurries are also found to be pH-sensitive. Additionally, XRD and SEM analyses support the proposed intercalation of the clays. The findings suggest the potential application of small-chain betaine functionalized clays in engineering and energy applications. Overall, this study provides insight into predicting the stability and strength of functionalized clay suspensions.

Elastoviscoplasticity, hyperaging, and time-age-time-temperature superposition in aqueous dispersions of bentonite clay

Clay slurries are both ubiquitous and essential in the oil exploration industry, and are most commonly employed as drilling fluids. Due to its natural abundance, bentonite clay is often the de facto choice for these materials. Understanding and predicting the mechanical response of these fluids is critical for safe and efficient drilling operations. However, rheological modeling of bentonite clay suspensions is complicated by the fact that thermally-driven microscopic arrangements of particle aggregates lead to a continual evolution of the viscoelastic properties and the yield stress of the suspension with time. Ergodic relations fundamental to linear viscoelastic theory, such as the Boltzmann superposition principle, do not hold in this scenario of 'rheological aging'. We present an approach for modeling the linear viscoelastic response of aging bentonite suspensions across a range of temperatures that is based on the transformation from laboratory time to an effective 'material time' domain in which time-translation invariance holds, and the typical relations of non-aging linear viscoelastic theory apply. In particular, we model the constitutive relationship between stress and strain-rate in the bentonite suspensions as fractional Maxwell gels with constant relaxation dynamics in the material time domain, in parallel with a non-aging Newtonian viscous contribution to the total stress. This approach is supported by experimental measurements of the stress relaxation and rapid time-resolved measurements of the linear viscoelastic properties performed using optimized exponential chirps. This data is then reduced to master curves in the material domain using time-age-time superposition to obtain best fits of the model parameters over a range of operating temperatures.

Modulation of soft glassy dynamics in aqueous suspensions of an anisotropic charged swelling clay through pH adjustment

HYPOTHESIS

Sodium-montmorillonite (Na-Mt) particles are geometrically anisometric that carry a pH dependent anisotropic surface charge. Therefore, it should be possible to manipulate the particle-particle interaction of colloidal range Na-Mt suspensions through pH changes which in turn should alter the soft glassy dynamics of Na-Mt suspensions.

EXPERIMENTS

Rheological experiments were used to probe the impact of pH mediated colloidal particle-particle interaction on the physical aging, linear viscoelastic response, and yield stress behavior of Na-Mt suspension.

FINDINGS

The temporal evolution of the storage modulus (G') was stronger in the acid regime (pH < 9.5) than the base (pH ≥ 9.5) pH regime. Horizontal shifting of the aging curves in the acid and base regimes led to aging time-H⁺ concentration and aging time-OH^- concentration superposition. An aging time-Na-Mt concentration superposition was also observed in both pH regimes. The critical stress associated with the viscosity bifurcation behavior increased linearly with G' but with different slopes for acid and base regime. We propose that positively charged patches on the Na-Mt particle edge merge with the characteristic surface as a function of H⁺ ions in the system. This leads to a strongly associated microstructure at low pH and a relatively weak but associated microstructure at natural pH, hence confirming the hypothesis.

Tailoring the phase diagram of discotic mesogens

The computational modelling of discotic molecules is a central topic in colloid science that is key for the smart design of a broad range of modern functional materials. This work lays out a versatile interaction model capable of exposing the rich mesogenic behaviour of discotics. A single coarse-grained spheroplatelet core framework is employed to generate a variety of pair interaction anisotropy classes, favouring specific relative orientations of the particles (stacked, side-side, crossed, T-shaped). This paves the way for the systematic tailoring of the discotic liquid phase diagram. Monte Carlo simulations are performed for an ensemble of case studies to illustrate the correlation between the topology of the interaction and the formation of stable nematic, smectic and columnar phases, as well as of less common cubatic, uniaxial and biaxial columnar domains.

Polyphosphates can stabilize but also aggregate colloids

Phosphates are well known as dispersants for a variety of colloidal particles. Here however we use rheological measurements to show that high molecular weight polyphosphates (PP) can instead act as a flocculant for LAPONITE® clay platelets. The proposed mechanism is bridging of PP between clay particle edges, leading to highly charged clusters forming a Wigner glass. Dynamic light scattering shows a bimodal cluster size distribution, independent of PP molecular weight, but the highest molecular weight gave the highest viscous and loss moduli for the PP-clay solid. These unique all-inorganic solids may have application in solid-state ionic conducting materials, controlled release fertilizers and biomedical applications.

Montmorillonite-lipid hybrid carriers for ionizable and neutral poorly water-soluble drugs: Formulation, characterization and in vitro lipolysis studies

Lipid-based formulations (LBFs) are a popular strategy for enhancing the gastrointestinal solubilization and absorption of poorly water-soluble drugs. In light of this, montmorillonite-lipid hybrid (MLH) particles, composed of medium-chain triglycerides, lecithin and montmorillonite clay platelets, have been developed as a novel solid-state LBF. Owing to the unique charge properties of montmorillonite, whereby the clay platelet surfaces carry a permanent negative charge and the platelet edges carry a pH-dependent charge, three model poorly water-soluble drugs with different charge properties; blonanserin (weak base, pKa 7.7), ibuprofen (weak acid, pKa 4.5) and fenofibrate (neutral), were formulated as MLH particles and their performance during biorelevant in vitro lipolysis at pH 7.5 was investigated. For blonanserin, drug solubilization during in vitro lipolysis was significantly reduced 3.4-fold and 3.2-fold for MLH particles in comparison to a control lipid solution and silica-lipid hybrid (SLH) particles, respectively. It was hypothesized that strong electrostatic interactions between the anionic montmorillonite platelet surfaces and cationic blonanserin molecules were responsible for the inferior performance of MLH particles. In contrast, no significant influence on drug solubilization was observed for ibuprofen- and fenofibrate-loaded MLH particles. The results of the current study indicate that whilst MLH particles are a promising novel formulation strategy for poorly water-soluble drugs, drug ionization tendency and the potential for drug-clay interactions must be taken into consideration to ensure an appropriate performance.

Controlling the Rheology of Montmorillonite Stabilized Oil-in-Water Emulsions

The rheology of hexadecane-in-water emulsions stabilized by montmorillonite platelets was investigated. In these systems excess particles form a network in the continuous phase which strongly dictates their rheological behavior. The emulsions were modified by the addition of NaCl and Na₄P₂O₇ to the continuous phase at varying concentrations. Remarkably, changes of up to 3 orders of magnitude in elastic modulus and yield stress of the emulsions were achieved. The droplets retained long-term coalescence stability after the addition of NaCl or Na₄P₂O₇ and even after the removal of the continuous phase network. The latter finding shows that the droplets are primarily stabilized by the formation of a solid barrier at the interface. These emulsions are therefore highly versatile formulation materials with an exceptional degree of stability and tunability.

Short- and Long-Range Attractive Forces That Influence the Structure of Montmorillonite Osmotic Hydrates

Clay swelling is a colloidal phenomenon that has a large influence on flow and solute migration in soils and sediments. While models for clay swelling have been proposed over many years, debate remains as to the interaction forces that combine to produce the observed swelling behavior. Using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering, we study the influence of salinity, in combination with layer charge, interlayer cation, and particle size, on montmorillonite swelling. We observe a decrease in swelling with increased layer charge, increased cation charge, and decreased cation hydration, each indicative of the critical influence of Coulombic attraction between the negatively charged layers and interlayer cations. Cryo-TEM images of individual montmorillonite particles also reveal that swelling is dependent upon the number of layers in a particle. Calculations of the van der Waals (vdW) interaction based on new measurements of Hamaker coefficients confirm that long-range vdW interactions extend beyond near-neighbor layer interactions and result in a decrease in layer spacing with a larger number of layers. This work clarifies the short- and long-range attractive interactions that govern clay structure and ultimately the stability and permeability of hydrated clays in the environment.

Steady-state droplet size in montmorillonite stabilised emulsions

The formation of hexadecane-in-water emulsions stabilised by montmorillonite platelets was studied. In this system the platelets form a monolayer around the droplets and the droplet size decreases with increasing platelet volume fraction. However, the number of platelets present exceeds that required for monolayer coverage. The kinetics of emulsification were investigated and coalescence of droplets during turbulent mixing was found to continue even after the droplets had reached their ultimate size. Non-spherical droplets, resulting from arrested coalescence, were not observed suggesting that particles may be desorbing from the interface during the turbulent flow. A kinetic model based on a competition between droplet break-up and coalescence, mediated by particle adsorption and desorption, reproduces experimental trends in droplet diameter. The model can be used to predict the most efficient formulation to minimise droplet diameters for given materials and mixing conditions and sheds light on the processes occurring during emulsification in this system.

Three-Phase Coexistence in Colloidal Rod-Plate Mixtures

Aqueous suspensions of clay particles, such as montmorillonite (MMT) platelets and sepiolite (Sep) rods, tend to form gels at concentrations around 1 vol %. For Sep rods, adsorbing sodium polyacrylate to the surface allows for an isotropic-nematic phase separation to be seen instead. Here, MMT is added to such Sep suspensions, resulting in a complex phase behavior. Across a range of clay concentrations, separation into three phases is observed: a lower, nematic phase dominated by Sep rods, a MMT-rich middle layer, which is weakly birefringent and probably a gel, and a dilute top phase. Analysis of phase volumes suggests that the middle layer may contain as much as 6 vol % MMT.
