Abstract
Cationic random copolymers (PCm) consisting of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC; P) with methacroylcholine chloride (MCC; C) and anionic random copolymers (PSn) consisting of MPC and potassium 3-(methacryloyloxy)propanesulfonate (MPS; S) were prepared via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer method. "m" and "n" represent the compositions (mol %) of the MCC and MPS units in the copolymers, respectively. The degrees of polymerization for the copolymers were 93-99. Water-soluble MPC unit contains a pendant zwitterionic phosphorylcholine group whose charges are neutralized in pendant groups. MCC and MPS units contain the cationic quaternary ammonium and anionic sulfonate groups, respectively. The stoichiometrically charge-neutralized mixture of a matched pair of PCm and PSn aqueous solutions resulted in the spontaneous formation of water-soluble PCm/PSn polyion complex (PIC) micelles. These PIC micelles have the MPC-rich surface and MCC/MPS core. These PIC micelles were characterized using 1H NMR, dynamic and static light scattering, and transmission electron microscopic measurements. The hydrodynamic radius of these PIC micelles depends on the mixing ratio of the oppositely charged random copolymers. The charge-neutralized mixture formed maximum-size PIC micelles.

Weak Polyelectrolytes as Nanoarchitectonic Design Tools for Functional Materials: A Review of Recent Achievements. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 27:molecules27103263. [PMID: 35630741 PMCID: PMC9145934 DOI: 10.3390/molecules27103263] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/29/2022] [Revised: 05/13/2022] [Accepted: 05/16/2022] [Indexed: 12/23/2022]
Abstract
The ionization degree, charge density, and conformation of weak polyelectrolytes can be adjusted through adjusting the pH and ionic strength stimuli. Such polymers thus offer a range of reversible interactions, including electrostatic complexation, H-bonding, and hydrophobic interactions, which position weak polyelectrolytes as key nano-units for the design of dynamic systems with precise structures, compositions, and responses to stimuli. The purpose of this review article is to discuss recent examples of nanoarchitectonic systems and applications that use weak polyelectrolytes as smart components. Surface platforms (electrodeposited films, brushes), multilayers (coatings and capsules), processed polyelectrolyte complexes (gels and membranes), and pharmaceutical vectors from both synthetic or natural-type weak polyelectrolytes are discussed. Finally, the increasing significance of block copolymers with weak polyion blocks is discussed with respect to the design of nanovectors by micellization and film/membrane nanopatterning via phase separation.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive mesoporous silica films were prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly through the physical entrapment of a functional block copolymer structuring agent, which simultaneously serves to functionalise the mesopore. These polymer-silica hybrid materials exhibit remarkable ionic permselectivity under highly filled conditions, and offer the potential for local polymer functionalisation for enhanced and tunable ionic permselectivity. This innovative and simple approach for the in situ functionalisation of mesoporous silica has the potential to improve how we approach the design of complex architectures at the nanoscale for enhanced transport, and is thus relevant for a variety of technologies based on molecular transport in nanoscale pores including separation, sensing, catalysis, and energy conversion.

Abstract
pH/reduction dual-triggered chicken-feather-keratin-based prodrug nanoparticles (C-PK/- SS-Hy-D NPs) were designed via a facile one-pot oxidation coupling reaction between the thiol-functional acid-labile prodrug M-Hy-D and the PEGylated keratin (PK) graft copolymer, for tumor intracellular doxorubicin (DOX) delivery. Due to the encapsulation of the pH and the reduction of the dual-responsive small prodrug D-Hy- SS-Hy-D, a high drug content of 45.8% was obtained in the proposed prodrug nanoparticles. They exhibited excellent pH and reduction of dual-triggered drug release, with cumulative drug release of 88.6% within 51 h in the simulated tumor intracellular microenvironment, while the premature drug leakage was only 13.7% in the simulated normal physiological medium. The in vitro experiments revealed the enhanced antitumor efficacy of the C-PK/- SS-Hy-D NPs than the free DOX at a higher dosage of >10 μg/mL.

Abstract
Ordered mesoporous silica materials were prepared under different pH conditions by using a silicon alkoxide as a silica source and polyion complex (PIC) micelles as the structure-directing agents. PIC micelles were formed by complexation between a weak polyacid-containing double-hydrophilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PEO-b-PAA), and a weak polybase, oligochitosan-type polyamine. As both the micellization process and the rate of silica condensation are highly dependent on pH, the properties of silica mesostructures can be modulated by changing the pH of the reaction medium. Varying the materials synthesis pH from 4.5 to 7.9 led to 2D-hexagonal, wormlike or lamellar mesostructures, with a varying degree of order. The chemical composition of the as-synthesized hybrid organic/inorganic materials was also found to vary with pH. The structure variations were discussed based on the extent of electrostatic complexing bonds between acrylate and amino functions and on the silica condensation rate as a function of pH.

Abstract
Despite the versatility of periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs), the bactericide capacity of these hybrid platforms has seldom been explored. Herein, we describe the synthesis of large-pore phenylene-bridged PMOs, mesostructured by polyion complex (PIC) micelles (PICPMOs) incorporating an antibiotic, neomycin B. A key feature of this approach is that the bioactive molecules are directly encapsulated within the PICPMOs during their formation. The engineered PICPMOs exhibit a well-ordered hexagonal mesophase with a molecular-scale crystallinity and large mesopores (8 nm), which facilitates pH-triggered delivery of the drug. The results obtained with a pathogenic Escherichia coli strain clearly demonstrate the potential of such PICPMOs for antibacterial applications.
