Abstract
Surfactants are employed in microfluidic systems not just for drop stabilisation, but also to study local phenomena in industrial processes. On the scale of a single drop, these include foaming, emulsification and stability of foams and emulsions using statistically significant ensembles of bubbles or drops respectively. In addition, surfactants are often a part of a formulation in microfluidic drop reactors. In all these applications, surfactant dynamics play a crucial role and need to be accounted for. In this review, the effect of surfactant dynamics is considered on the level of standard microfluidic operations: drop formation, movement in channels and coalescence, but also on a more general level, considering the mechanisms controlling surfactant adsorption on time- and length-scales characteristic of microfluidics. Some examples of relevant calculations are provided. The advantages and challenges of the use of microfluidics to measure dynamic interfacial tension at short time-scales are discussed.

Abstract
The adsorption characteristics of amino acid surfactants, synthesized as substances with different volumes and hydrophilic head properties, have been previously described experimentally, without robust theoretical explanation. A theoretical model enabling the characterization of the adsorption behavior and physicochemical properties of this type of biodegradable surfactants, based on molecular structure, would be beneficial for assessment of their usefulness in colloids and interface science in comparison with typical surface-active substances. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour of synthesized amino acid surfactants at the liquid/gas interface was analyzed experimentally (by surface tension measurements using two independent techniques) and theoretically by means of an elaborate model, considering the volume of the surfactant hydrophilic "head" and its ionization degree. It was shown that the adsorption behavior of the synthesized compounds can be successfully described by the proposed model, including the Helfand-Frisch-Lebowitz isotherm based on the equation of state of 2D hard disk-like particles, with molecular properties of surfactant particles obtained using molecular dynamics simulations (MDS). Model parameters allow for direct comparison of physicochemical properties of synthesized amino acid surfactants with other ionic and non-ionic surface-active substances. Furthermore, it was revealed that intermolecular hydrogen bonds allow the formation of surfactant dimers with high surface activity.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The shear stress of the axisymmetric flow field triggers a nonuniform distribution of the surfactants at the surface of a rising bubble, known as stagnant cap. The formation of the stagnant cap gives rise to Marangoni stresses that reduce the mobility of the interface, which in return reduces the rising velocity. However, the conditions in technological processes usually deviate from the linear rise of a single bubble in a quiescent unbounded liquid. Asymmetric shear can act on the bubble surface e.g. due to the vorticity in the surrounding flow, bubble-bubble interactions, or influence of the reactor wall. A different surfactant distribution at the interface is expected under asymmetric shear, which can change the hydrodynamic behavior of the interface drastically. EXPERIMENTS Here we conduct model experiments with a bubble or a drop at the tip of a capillary placed in a defined flow field. Thereby we investigate the influence of asymmetric shear forces on the interface in the presence of surfactants. Microscopic particle tracking velocimetry is employed to measure the velocity of the surfactant-laden interface for different degrees of asymmetry in the surrounding liquid flow. FINDINGS We show a direct experimental observation of the circulating flow at the interface under asymmetric shear, which prevents the formation of the typical stagnant cap. Additionally, we reveal that the interface remains mobile regardless of the surfactant concentration. Our results confirm that increasing the degree of asymmetry increases the shear forces and thus the interfacial velocity.

Abstract
The present study investigates the effects of very low concentrations of polypropylene glycol (PPG) on the rheological properties of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) aqueous solutions at the surface for the precise control of foam properties. Langmuir trough experiments and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) of the AOT monolayer on the surfaces of PPG aqueous solutions indicated that a very low concentration of PPG increased the number of AOT molecules at the surface. Viscoelastic behaviors at the surface and surface tension isotherms in mixed aqueous solutions of AOT and PPG revealed that AOT interacted with PPG in the surface and bulk phase. A modified Ross-Miles method was performed to assess the foam stabilities of AOT aqueous solutions with and without PPG. The stabilization of foam by PPG was attributed to the rheological properties of AOT aqueous solutions at the surface.

Abstract
Capillary pressure experiments are performed in microgravity conditions on board the International Space Station to quantify the dynamic interfacial behavior of mixed adsorption layers of TTAB and C13DMPO at the water/hexane interface. While the non-ionic surfactant C13DMPO is soluble in both bulk phases, water and hexane, the cationic surfactant TTAB is only soluble in the aqueous phase. The interfacial layer is thus formed by TTAB molecules adsorbing from the aqueous phase while the C13DMPO molecules adsorb from the aqueous phase, and transfer partially into the hexane phase until both the equilibrium of adsorption and the distribution between the two adjacent liquid phases is established. The experimental constrains as well as all possible influencing parameters, such as interfacial and bulk phase compressibility, interfacial curvature, calibration of pressure and absolute geometry size, are discussed in detail. The experimental results in terms of the dilational interfacial viscoelasticity of the mixed adsorption layers in a wide range of oscillation frequencies show that the existing theoretical background had to be extended in order to consider the effect of transfer of the non-ionic surfactant across the interface, and the curvature of the water/hexane interface. A good qualitative agreement between theory and experiment was obtained, however, for a quantitative comparison, additional accurate information on the adsorption isotherms and diffusion coefficients of the two studied surfactants in water and hexane, alone and in a mixed system, are required.

Abstract
Polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures and their interactions with fluid interfaces are an important research field due to their use in technological applications. Most of the existing knowledge on these systems is based on models in which the polyelectrolyte concentration is around 50 times lower than that used in commercial formulations. The present work marks a step to close the gap on the understanding of their behavior under more practically-relevant conditions. The adsorption of concentrated mixtures of poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium) chloride and sodium N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurate at the water/vapor interface with a crude mixing protocol has been studied by different surface tension techniques, Brewster angle microscopy, neutron reflectometry, and several bulk characterization techniques. Kinetically-trapped aggregates formed during mixing influence the interfacial morphology of mixtures produced in the equilibrium one-phase region, yet fluctuations in the surface tension isotherm result depending on the tensiometric technique applied. At low bulk surfactant concentrations, the free surfactant concentration is very low, and the interfacial composition matches the trend of the bulk complexes, which is a behavior that has not been observed in studies on more dilute mixtures. Nevertheless, a transition to synergistic co-adsorption of complexes and free surfactant is observed at the higher bulk surfactant concentrations studied. This transition appears to be a special feature of these more concentrated mixtures, which deserves attention in future studies of systems with additional components.

Abstract
Surface tension and dilational viscoelasticity of solutions of various surfactants measured with bubble and drop profile analysis tensiometry are discussed. The study also includes experiments on the co-adsorption of surfactant molecules from a solution drop and alkane molecules from saturated alkane vapor phase. Using experimental data for 12 surfactants with different surface activities, it is shown that depletion due to adsorption of surfactant from the drop bulk can be significant. An algorithm is proposed quantitatively to take into consideration the depletion effect which is required for a correct description of the co-adsorption of alkanes on the solution drop surface and the correct analysis of experimental dynamic surface tension data to determine the adsorption mechanism. Bubble and drop profile analysis tensiometry is also the method of choice for measuring the dilational viscoelasticity of the adsorbed interfacial layer. The same elasticity moduli are obtained with the bubble and drop method only when the equilibrium surface pressures are sufficiently small (Π < 15 mN m-1). When the surface pressure for a surfactant solution is larger than this value, the viscoelasticity moduli determined from drop profile experiments become significantly larger than those obtained from bubble profile measurements.
