Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Fluorine-Free Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes for the Fabrication of Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Films

Durable superhydrophobic surface in wearable sensors: From nature to application

The current generation of wearable sensors often experiences signal interference and external corrosion, leading to device degradation and failure. To address these challenges, the biomimetic superhydrophobic approach has been developed, which offers self-cleaning, low adhesion, corrosion resistance, anti-interference, and other properties. Such surfaces possess hierarchical nanostructures and low surface energy, resulting in a smaller contact area with the skin or external environment. Liquid droplets can even become suspended outside the flexible electronics, reducing the risk of pollution and signal interference, which contributes to the long-term stability of the device in complex environments. Additionally, the coupling of superhydrophobic surfaces and flexible electronics can potentially enhance the device performance due to their large specific surface area and low surface energy. However, the fragility of layered textures in various scenarios and the lack of standardized evaluation and testing methods limit the industrial production of superhydrophobic wearable sensors. This review provides an overview of recent research on superhydrophobic flexible wearable sensors, including the fabrication methodology, evaluation, and specific application targets. The processing, performance, and characteristics of superhydrophobic surfaces are discussed, as well as the working mechanisms and potential challenges of superhydrophobic flexible electronics. Moreover, evaluation strategies for application-oriented superhydrophobic surfaces are presented.

Bioinspired Superhydrophobic Fibrous Materials

Natural fibers with robust water repellency play an important role in adapting organisms to various environments, which has inspired the development of artificial superhydrophobic fibrous materials with applications in self-cleaning, antifogging, water harvesting, heat exchanging, catalytic reactions, and microrobots. However, these highly textured surfaces (micro/nanotextured) suffer from frequent liquid penetration in high humidity and abrasion-induced destruction of the local environment. Herein, bioinspired superhydrophobic fibrous materials are reviewed from the perspective of the dimension scale of fibers. First, the fibrous dimension characteristics of several representative natural superhydrophobic fibrous systems are summarized, along with the mechanisms involved. Then, artificial superhydrophobic fibers are summarized, along with their various applications. Nanometer-scale fibers enable superhydrophobicity by minimizing the liquid-solid contact area. Micrometer-scale fibers are advantageous for enhancing the mechanical stability of superhydrophobicity. Micrometer-scale conical fibrous structures endow a Laplace force with a particular magnitude for self-removing condensed tiny dewdrops in highly humid air and stably trapping large air pockets underwater. Furthermore, several representative surface modification strategies for constructing superhydrophobic fibers are presented. In addition, several conventional applications of superhydrophobic systems are presented. It is anticipated that the review will inspire the design and fabrication of superhydrophobic fibrous systems.

Polymerization of monomer aggregates for tailoring and patterning water wettability

An approach of 'polymerization of monomers in its aggregated form' is unprecedentedly introduced to (i) tailor the water wettability of fibrous and porous substrates from hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity, and (ii) associate patterned wettability. A solution of selected monomers-i.e., alkyl acrylate in a good solvent (indicating high solubility; ethanol) was transferred into a bad solvent (refers to poor solubility; water) to achieve a stable dispersion of monomer aggregates of size <1 μm for deposition on fibrous and porous substrates. Its photopolymerization provided a durable coating with the ability to tailor the water wettability from 134° to 153°. Furthermore, a spatially selective photopolymerization process yielded a patterned interface of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. Such a facile chemical approach with the ability to provide a durable coating embedded with tailored and patterned wettability would be useful for various potential applications.

ZnO nanoparticles coated and stearic acid modified superhydrophobic chitosan film for self-cleaning and oil-water separation

The aim of this study was to prepare superhydrophobic chitosan films using a ZnO nanoparticle coating and stearic acid hydrophobic modification. A 1 % concentration of ZnO nanoparticles and a 1 % concentration of stearic acid generated a superhydrophobic film with the largest contact angle (WCA) of 156°, which was attributed to the synergy of micro/nano-level hierarchical structure and low surface energy modification. The superhydrophobic film showed better stability to acid, alkali, heat, and UV irradiation than a neat chitosan film and a reduction in light transmittance of 14.4 % at 354 nm. The superhydrophobic chitosan film also showed excellent self-cleaning and oil-water separation performance. Our findings will expand the application of chitosan films in food packaging, outdoor self-cleaning materials and oil-water separations.

Self-Healing Superwetting Surfaces, Their Fabrications, and Properties

The research on superwetting surfaces with a self-healing function against various damages has progressed rapidly in the recent decade. They are expected to be an effective approach to increasing the durability and application robustness of superwetting materials. Various methods and material systems have been developed to prepare self-healing superwetting surfaces, some of which mimic natural superwetting surfaces. However, they still face challenges, such as being workable only for specific damages, external stimulation to trigger the healing process, and poor self-healing ability in the water, marine, or biological systems. There is a lack of fundamental understanding as well. This article comprehensively reviews self-healing superwetting surfaces, including their fabrication strategies, essential rules for materials design, and self-healing properties. Self-healing triggered by different external stimuli is summarized. The potential applications of self-healing superwetting surfaces are highlighted. This article consists of four main sections: (1) the functional surfaces with various superwetting properties, (2) natural self-healing superwetting surfaces (i.e., plants, insects, and creatures) and their healing mechanism, (3) recent research development in various self-healing superwetting surfaces, their preparation, wetting properties in the air or liquid media, and healing mechanism, and (4) the prospects including existing challenges, our views and potential solutions to the challenges, and future research directions.

Superhydrophobic Biological Fluid-Repellent Surfaces: Mechanisms and Applications

Superhydrophobic biological fluid-repellent surfaces (SBFRSs) have attracted great attention in the treatment of blood and urine-related diseases because of their unique wettability and compatibility, which creates a new path for the development of medical apparatus and instruments, and are expected to create advances in various fields. Here, this review provides an up-to-date summary of research progress on the repellent mechanism and application of SBFRSs. The underlying physical and chemical principles for designing superhydrophobic surfaces are first introduced. Then, the dialectical influences of solid-liquid interactions between superhydrophobic surfaces and biological fluids on the wettability and compatibility are emphatically expounded. Subsequently, attention is drawn to the recent applications of SBFRSs in biomedical fields, such as surgical medical apparatus, implant materials, extracorporeal circulation devices, and biological fluid detection. Finally, the outlook and challenges in terms of employing SBFRSs are also discussed. This review is expected to provide a comprehensive guidance for the preparation of SBFRSs with compatibility and long-term superhydrophobic stability that is closely related to clinical applications.

Effect of Solvent on Superhydrophobicity Behavior of Tiles Coated with Epoxy/PDMS/SS

Superhydrophobic coatings are widely applied in various applications due to their water-repelling characteristics. However, producing a durable superhydrophobic coating with less harmful low surface materials and solvents remains a challenge. Therefore, the aim of this work is to study the effects of three different solvents in preparing a durable and less toxic superhydrophobic coating containing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), silica solution (SS), and epoxy resin (DGEBA). A simple sol-gel method was used to prepare a superhydrophobic coating, and a spray-coating technique was employed to apply the superhydrophobic coating on tile substrates. The coated tile substrates were characterized for water contact angle (WCA) and tilting angle (TA) measurements, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Among 3 types of solvent (acetone, hexane, and isopropanol), a tile sample coated with isopropanol-added solution acquires the highest water contact angle of 152 ± 2° with a tilting angle of 7 ± 2° and a surface roughness of 21.80 nm after UV curing for 24 h. The peel off test showed very good adherence of the isopropanol-added solution coating on tiles. A mechanism for reactions that occur in the best optimized solvent is proposed.

Advances in the development of superhydrophobic and icephobic surfaces

Superhydrophobicity and icephobicity are governed by surface chemistry and surface structure. These two features signify a potential advance in surface engineering and have recently garnered significant attention from the research community. This review aims to simulate further research in the development of superhydrophobic and icephobic surfaces in order to achieve their wide-spread adoption in practical applications. The review begins by establishing the fundamentals of the wetting phenomenon and wettability parameters. This is followed by the recent advances in modeling and simulations of the response of superhydrophobic surfaces to static and dynamic droplets contact and impingement, respectively. In view of their versatility and multifunctionality, a special attention is given to the development of these surfaces using nanocomposites. Furthermore, the review considers advances in icephobicity, its comprehensive characterization and its relation to superhydrophobicity. The review also includes the importance of the use of superhydrophobic surface to combat viral and bacterial contamination that exist in fomites.

Tailoring Materials with Specific Wettability in Biomedical Engineering

As a fundamental feature of solid surfaces, wettability is playing an increasingly important role in our daily life. Benefitting from the inspiration of biological paradigms and the development in manufacturing technology, numerous wettability materials with elaborately designed surface topology and chemical compositions have been fabricated. Based on these advances, wettability materials have found broad technological implications in various fields ranging from academy, industry, agriculture to biomedical engineering. Among them, the practical applications of wettability materials in biomedical-related fields are receiving remarkable researches during the past decades because of the increasing attention to healthcare. In this review, the research progress of materials with specific wettability is discussed. After briefly introducing the underlying mechanisms, the fabrication strategies of artificial materials with specific wettability are described. The emphasis is put on the application progress of wettability biomaterials in biomedical engineering. The prospects for the future trend of wettability materials are also presented.

Preparation and Application of Fluorine-Free Finishing Agent with Excellent Water Repellency for Cotton Fabric

Water repellent is an important functional finish for cotton fabric. However, cotton fabrics often have poor washing resistance and other performances after actual finishing. In this study, based on the structural characteristics of cotton fiber and durability of water repellent, a cross-linked amino long-chain alkyl polysiloxane (CAHPS) was first prepared, and then reacted with modified silica. Finally, a chemically bonded organic-inorganic nanohybrid cross-linked polysiloxane (rSiO2-CAHPS) was fabricated. Furthermore, the rSiO2-CAHPS was emulsified to obtain a durable fluorine-free water repellent. The water repellent finishing for cotton fabric was carried out by the pad-dry-cure process. After finishing, the cotton fabric had good resistance to conventional liquids and excellent washing resistance, and still maintained good water repellency after 30 rounds of soaping. Moreover, properties including air permeability, mechanical property and whiteness are hardly affected after finishing. SEM and XPS characterization show that a layer of dense silicon film is formed on the surface of cotton fabric by rSiO2-CAHPS water repellent. The existence of nanosilica can improve the surface roughness of cotton fibers. The synergistic effect of fiber matrix, nanoparticles and CAHPS endows the fabric with a micro/nano-multi-scale micro-rough structure, which improves the water repellency of cotton fabric after water repellent finishing.

Rationally Constructed Surface Energy and Dynamic Hard Domains Balance Mechanical Strength and Self-Healing Efficiency of Energetic Linear Polymer Materials

Polymeric materials that simultaneously possess excellent mechanical properties and high self-healing ability at room temperature, convenient healing, and facile fabrication are always a huge challenge. Herein, we report on surface-energy-driven self-healing energetic linear polyurethane elastomers (EPU) that were facilely fabricated by two-step methods to acquire high healing efficiency and mechanical properties. By constructing surface energy and dynamic hard domains, energetic linear polyurethane elastomers not only obtained high healing ability and mechanical properties at high or room temperature but also avoid the use of some assisted healing conditions and complex chemical structure design and decrease manufacturing difficulty. Based on the interfacial healing physical model, various trends of surface tension, radius, and depth of the crack bottom were calculated to analyze the healing mechanism. We propose that polyurethane elastomers with low junction density could generate excess surface energy resulting from damage and drive self-healing, and incorporating a small amount of disulfide bonds increases the slightly packed hard phase and decreases the healing energy barrier. This work may offer a novel strategy for improving mechanical tensile and healing ability in the field of self-healing material application.

Review on the recent development of durable superhydrophobic materials for practical applications

Biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces show great potential in oil-water separation, anti-icing and self-cleaning. However, due to the instability caused by its fragile structure and non-durable superhydrophobicity, it is difficult to apply them in the actual field. Here, by introducing surface wettability and analysing the mechanism of superhydrophobic failure, it is concluded that the reason for the failure of the superhydrophobic surface comes from the transition of the surface energy and the hysteresis of the contact angle (CA). On the basis of this analysis, it is concluded that the principle of designing a durable superhydrophobic surface is to satisfy one of the following three points: improving the binding force between molecules, introducing durable materials and improving chemical durability. On this basis, a variety of preparation methods are proposed, such as assembly method and spray/dip coating method, and the design and preparation of a self-healing surface inspired by nature will also be included in the introduction. Last but not least, the preparation and application of a durable super-hydrophobic surface in oil-water separation, anti-icing and self-cleaning are also introduced in detail. This review reveals the conclusions and prospects of durable superhydrophobic surfaces, and aims to inspire more researchers to invest in this research.

Porous Layer-by-Layer Films Assembled Using Polyelectrolyte Blend to Control Wetting Properties

Porous layer-by-layer (LbL) films have been employed for the implementation of superwetting surfaces, but they are limited to the LbL films consisting of only two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. In this study, LbL films were assembled using a cationic polymer blend of branched poly(ethylene imine) (BPEI) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), and anionic poly(acrylic acid); they were then acid-treated at pH 1.8-2.0 to create a porous structure. The films of 100% BPEI exhibited a relatively smooth surface, whereas those of the 100% PAH exhibited porous surfaces. However, various surface morphologies were obtained when BPEI and PAH were blended. When coated with fluorinated silane, films with 50% and 100% PAH exhibited relatively higher water contact angles (WCAs). In particular, films with 50% PAH exhibited the highest WCA of 140-150° when treated at pH 1.8. These fluorinated films were further infused with lubricant oil to determine their feasibility as slippery surfaces. The water and oil sliding angles were in the range of 10-20° and 5-10°, respectively. Films prepared with the BPEI/PAH blend showed lower water slide angles than those prepared with 100% BPEI or PAH. Acid treatment of LbL films assembled using a polyelectrolyte blend can effectively control surface morphologies and can potentially be applied in superwetting.

Adhesion behaviors on four special wettable surfaces: natural sources, mechanisms, fabrications and applications

The study of adhesion behaviors on solid-liquid surfaces plays an important role in scientific research and development in various fields, such as medicine, biology and agriculture. The contact angle and sliding angle of the liquid on the solid surface are commonly used to characterize and measure the wettability of a particular surface. They have a wide range of values, which results in different wettability. It boils down to the adhesion of solid surfaces to liquids. This feature article is aimed at revealing the essence of the adhesion behavior from the aspects of controlling the chemical composition or changing the geometrical microstructure of the surface, and reviewing the natural sources, wetting models, preparation methods and applications of four kinds of typical solid-liquid surfaces (low-adhesion superhydrophobic surfaces, high-adhesion superhydrophobic surfaces, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) and hydrophilic/superhydrophilic surfaces). Last, a summary and outlook on this field are given to point out the current challenges and the potential research directions of surface adhesion in the coming future.

Stretchable dual cross-linked silicon elastomer with a superhydrophobic surface and fast triple self-healing ability at room temperature

Stretchable elastomers with superhydrophobic surfaces have potential applications in wearable electronics. However, various types of damage inevitably occur on these elastomers in actual application, resulting in the deterioration of the superhydrophobic properties. In this work, superhydrophobic elastomers (HB-imine-BZn-PDMS), was fabricated by employing a dual-layered structure. The bottom layer was a silicon elastomer (imine-BZn-PDMS) with an imine/coordination dual cross-linked structure and room temperature self-healing efficiency of 94%. The top layer was imine-BZn-PDMS/silica nanocomposites to provide superhydrophobic properties. The HB-imine-BZn-PDMS elastomer exhibited fast triple self-healing ability at room temperature toward surface oxidation/decomposition, ruptures, or pinholes, and high durability under abrasion and stretching. The dual dynamic bonds of imine-BZn-PDMS enabled fast recovery of superhydrophobicity in 20 min at room temperature via bond exchange, after generating pinholes across the elastomer. Following surface chemical damage, the HB-imine-BZn-PDMS elastomer also exhibited fast (40 min) room-temperature self-healing ability, which is superior to that of most current self-healing superhydrophobic materials.

Superhydrophobic and Antioxidative Film Based on Edible Materials for Food Packaging

Significant wastage of the food deterioration in the food preserving process and residual liquid in a container has become a major concern for scientists and the whole society. In this study, an edible multifunctional film integrated superhydrophobicity and antioxidant ability is constructed by chitosan, tea polyphenol, carnauba wax material that is food and drug administration (FDA)-approved for food packaging. The formed edible packaging materials that exhibit great antioxidant property and extremely low water-absorbing quality, was thus proven to display excellent fresh beef preservation effect during storage of 14 days. Importantly, the formed edible multifunctional interface was also demonstrated to perform excellent superhydrophobicity due to the carnauba wax and exhibited large contact angles for various liquid foods, which could effectively reduce the liquid residue. Moreover, the formed edible multifunctional packaging materials showed good thermostability and biocompatibility, which has the potential to be applied as a functional packaging material.

Robust superhydrophobicity: mechanisms and strategies

Superhydrophobic surfaces hold great prospects for extremely diverse applications owing to their water repellence property. The essential feature of superhydrophobicity is micro-/nano-scopic roughness to reserve a large portion of air under a liquid drop. However, the vulnerability of the delicate surface textures significantly impedes the practical applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. Robust superhydrophobicity is a must to meet the rigorous industrial requirements and standards for commercial products. In recent years, major advancements have been made in elucidating the mechanisms of wetting transitions, design strategies and fabrication techniques of superhydrophobicity. This review will first introduce the mechanisms of wetting transitions, including the thermodynamic stability of the Cassie state and its breakdown conditions. Then we highlight the development, current status and future prospects of robust superhydrophobicity, including characterization, design strategies and fabrication techniques. In particular, design strategies, which are classified into passive resistance and active regeneration for the first time, are proposed and discussed extensively.

Bioinspired surfaces with wettability: biomolecule adhesion behaviors

Surface wettability plays an important role in regulating biomolecule adhesion behaviors. The biomolecule adhesion behaviors of superwettable surfaces have become an important topic as an important part of the interactions between materials and organisms. In addition to general research on the moderate wettability of surfaces, the studies of biomolecule adhesion behaviors extend to extreme wettability ranges such as superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic and slippery surfaces and attract both fundamental and practical interest. In this review, we summarize the recent studies on biomolecule adhesion behaviors on superwettable surfaces, especially superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic and slippery surfaces. The first part will focus on the influence of extreme wettability on cell adhesion behaviors. The second part will concentrate on the adhesion behaviors of biomacromolecules on superwettable surfaces including proteins and nucleic acids. Finally, the influences of wettability on small molecule adhesion behaviors on material surfaces have also been investigated. The mechanism of superwettable surfaces and their influences on biomolecule adhesion behaviors have been studied and highlighted.

Robust Superamphiphobic Coatings Based on Raspberry-like Hollow SnO2 Composites

Good mechanical and chemical stabilities are the key factors for the wide application of superhydrophobic surfaces. In this work, we first prepared raspberry-like hollow structured SnO₂ nanoparticles using a simple hydrothermal method, followed by an annealing step. Then, the intrinsic raspberry-like hollow SnO₂ nanoparticles were combined with hydrophilic SiO₂ nanoparticles to construct rough surfaces with suitable hierarchical structures, and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS-17) was used as a hydrophobic modifier of SnO₂, while epoxy resin was used as an adhesive to prepare a superamphiphobic coating with good stability and durability. Such a coating can be applied on various substrates using a simple spray-coating or drop-coating method. The water contact angle and diiodomethane contact angle of the coating could reach up to ∼165 and ∼151°, respectively. After various chemical and mechanical stability tests including hot water treatment, salt water corrosion, strong adhesive tape peeling, and kneading, the coatings still remained amphiphobic. The facile fabrication of the robust superhydrophobic coating has great potential for applications in real life and industrial production.

Mesostructured Electroactive Thin Films Through Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Redox Surfactants and Polyelectrolytes

Electroactive thin films are an important element in the devices devoted to energy conversion, actuators, and molecular electronics, among others. Their build-up by the layer-by-layer technique is an attractive choice since a fine control over the thickness and composition can be achieved. However, most of the assemblies described in the literature show a lack of internal order, and their thicknesses change upon oxidation-state alterations. In this work, we describe the formation of layer-by-layer assemblies of redox surfactants and polyelectrolytes that leads to the construction of mesoscale organized electroactive films. In contrast to thin films prepared with traditional redox polymers, here, the redox surfactant does not only allow the control of the film meso-organization (from 2D hexagonal to circular hexagonal phases) but it also allows the control of the number and position of the redox centers. Finally, these films show high stability and a negligible structural deformation under redox-state changes.

Dual-Functional, Superhydrophobic Coatings with Bacterial Anticontact and Antimicrobial Characteristics

Bacterial pathogens are responsible for millions of cases of illnesses and deaths each year throughout the world. The development of novel surfaces and coatings that effectively inhibit and prevent bacterial attachment, proliferation, and growth is one of the crucial steps for tackling this global challenge. Herein, we report a dual-functional coating for aluminum surfaces that relies on the controlled immobilization of lysozyme enzyme (muramidase) into interstitial spaces of presintered, nanostructured thin film based on ∼200 nm silica nanoparticles and the sequential chemisorption of an organofluorosilane to the available interfacial areas. The mean diameter of the resultant lysozyme microdomains was 3.1 ± 2.5 μm with an average spacing of 8.01 ± 6.8 μm, leading to a surface coverage of 15.32%. The coating had an overall root-mean-square (rms) roughness of 539 ± 137 nm and roughness factor of 1.50 ± 0.1, and demonstrated static, advancing, and receding water contact angles of 159.0 ± 1.0°, 155.4 ± 0.6°, and 154.4 ± 0.6°, respectively. Compared to the planar aluminum, the coated surfaces produced a 6.5 ± 0.1 (>99.99997%) and 4.0 ± 0.1 (>99.99%) log-cycle reductions in bacterial surfaces colonization against Gram-negative Salmonella Typhimurium LT2 and Gram-positive Listeria innocua, respectively. We anticipate that the implementation of such a coating strategy on healthcare environments and surfaces and food-contact surfaces can significantly reduce or eliminate potential risks associated with various contamination and cross-contamination scenarios.

Multifunctional Silica-Silicone Nanocomposite with Regenerative Superhydrophobic Capabilities

Superhydrophobic surfaces have been garnering increased interest because of their adaptive characteristics. However, concerns regarding their durability and complex fabrication techniques have limited their widespread adoption. In our study, we have developed an effective, durable, and versatile silica-silicone nanocomposite that can be applied through spray coating or bulk synthesized as superhydrophobic monoliths through a facile, economic, and scalable fabrication technique. For spray-coated samples, superhydrophobicity was achieved for concentrations above 9%. However, poor adhesion was observed for concentrations above 20%. Through extensive surface morphology studies, it was determined that a delicate balance between the polymer and dispersed superhydrophobic silica nanoparticles exists at a concentration of 14%. This concentration is necessary for developing the desired hierarchical structure and providing sufficient adhesion with the substrate. The monoliths were fabricated into complex geometries, with superhydrophobicity being observed in the 5 and 9% specimens. The hierarchical structure was formed through controlled surface abrasion, which created the microscale roughness and concurrently exposed the embedded silica nanoparticles. It was found that a monolith with a concentration of 9% provides excellent water repellency as well as a suitable emulsion viscosity to facilitate the molding process. Though compressive loading (up to 10 MPa) damages the monolith, the superhydrophobic performance can be quickly restored through abrasive layer removal. Both spray-coated and monolith specimens retained their superhydrophobicity after being subjected to high temperatures (up to 350 °C) and corrosive environments (pH 1-13) for 2 h.

Sustainable, Reshapable Surfactant-Polyelectrolyte Plastics Employing Water as a Plasticizer

Natural polymers such as those present in foods contain abundant noncovalent intra- and intermolecular interactions, notably hydrogen bonds, which make them rigid when dry, but on exposure to water soften, due to disruption of these interactions. This softening process allows them to be reshaped. Food-derived materials, however, have limited practical use due to their high brittleness and gradual degradation. Nevertheless, inspired by such properties, surfactant-polyelectrolyte-based polymers that contain abundant ionic interactions and can be repeatedly reshaped using water as plasticizer are described. The polymers, on the basis of main chain anionic poly(styrene sulfonates) combined with phosphonium surfactant, are readily synthesized with well-defined lamellar domains through interfacial metathesis reactions. The polymers present typical stress-strain characteristics of plastics, and their modulus undergoes a decrease of ca. 3 orders of magnitude upon shear and stretch forces after plasticizing with water. Since recycling of plastics generally involves complicated and energy-intensive processes (that leads to the majority of plastics being land-filled or incinerated), it is envisaged that reshapable polymers, such as those described here, could reduce the amount of plastic waste as they can be remolded as and when required, thus reducing pollution and the depletion of resources, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable society.

Waterproof breathable layers - A review

Waterproof breathable layers (WPBLs) can be classified into two large groups of hydrophilic nonporous and hydrophobic porous layers. These layers (e.g., fabrics, films, membranes, and meshes) can be produced by various continuous and non-continuous processes such as coating, laminating, film stretching, casting, etc. The most common methods for production, characterization, and testing of WPBLs are presented and discussed in light of recent publications. The materials with high level of waterproofness and breathability are often used in outerwear for winter sports, sailing apparel, raincoats, military/police jackets, backpacks, tents, cargo raps, footwear and etc. WPBLs can also be used for other specialized applications such as membrane distillation, oil-water filtration, and wound dressing. These applications are discussed by presenting several good examples. The main challenge in the production of these layers is to compromise between waterproofness and breathability with opposing nature. The related research gaps, challenges, and future outlook are highlighted to shed more light on the topic.

Totally Waterborne, Nonfluorinated, Mechanically Robust, and Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Coatings for Actual Anti-Icing

Bioinspired superhydrophobic coatings are of great interest in academic and industrial areas. However, their real-world applications are hindered by some main bottlenecks, especially the pollutive preparation methods (e.g., organic solvents and fluorinated compounds) and poor mechanical stability. Here, we report for the first time the totally waterborne, nonfluorinated, mechanically robust, and self-healing superhydrophobic coatings. The coatings were fabricated by spray-coating polyurethane (PU) aqueous solution and a hexadecyl polysiloxane-modified SiO₂ (SiO₂@HD-POS) aqueous suspension onto substrates using PU as the adhesive. The SiO₂@HD-POS suspension was synthesized by HCl-catalyzed reactions among hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, tetraethoxysilane, and SiO₂ nanoparticles. Besides high superhydrophobicity, the coatings exhibit exceptional mechanical stability against sandpaper abrasion for 200 cycles at 9.8 kPa and tape-peeling for 200 cycles at 90.5 kPa because of high durability and unique hierarchical macro-/nanostructure of the coating as well as solid lubrication of the SiO₂@HD-POS nanoparticles fallen off from the coatings. The coatings also show fast and stable self-healing capability owing to migration of the healing agent (HD-POS) to the damaged surface. Moreover, the coatings exhibit good static and dynamic anti-icing performance in outdoor environment (-15 °C, relative humidity = 54%). The superhydrophobic coatings may be used in various areas because the main bottlenecks have been successfully broken.

A Novel Synthetic UV-Curable Fluorinated Siloxane Resin for Low Surface Energy Coating

Low surface energy materials have attracted much attention due to their properties and various applications. In this work, we synthesized and characterized a series of ultraviolet (UV)-curable fluorinated siloxane polymers with various fluorinated acrylates-hexafluorobutyl acrylate, dodecafluoroheptyl acrylate, and trifluorooctyl methacrylate-grafted onto a hydrogen-containing poly(dimethylsiloxane) backbone. The structures of the fluorinated siloxane polymers were measured and confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Then the polymers were used as surface modifiers of UV-curable commercial polyurethane (DR-U356) at different concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 wt %). Among three formulations of these fluorinated siloxane polymers modified with DR-U356, hydrophobic states (91°, 92°, and 98°) were obtained at low concentrations (1 wt %). The DR-U356 resin is only in the hydrophilic state at 59.41°. The fluorine and siloxane element contents were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the results indicated that the fluorinated and siloxane elements were liable to migrate to the surface of resins. The results of the friction recovering assays showed that the recorded contact angles of the series of fluorinated siloxane resins were higher than the original values after the friction-annealing progressing.

Rational design of materials interface at nanoscale towards intelligent oil-water separation

Oil-water separation is critical for the water treatment of oily wastewater or oil-spill accidents. The oil contamination in water not only induces severe water pollution but also threatens human beings' health and all living species in the ecological system. To address this challenge, different nanoscale fabrication methods have been applied for endowing biomimetic porous materials, which provide a promising solution for oily-water remediation. In this review, we present the state-of-the-art developments in the rational design of materials interface with special wettability for the intelligent separation of immiscible/emulsified oil-water mixtures. A mechanistic understanding of oil-water separation is firstly described, followed by a summary of separation solutions for traditional oil-water mixtures and special oil-water emulsions enabled by self-amplified wettability due to nanostructures. Guided by the basic theory, the rational design of interfaces of various porous materials at nanoscale with special wettability towards superhydrophobicity-superoleophilicity, superhydrophilicity-superoleophobicity, and superhydrophilicity-underwater superoleophobicity is discussed in detail. Although the above nanoscale fabrication strategies are able to address most of the current challenges, intelligent superwetting materials developed to meet special oil-water separation demands and to further promote the separation efficiency are also reviewed for various special application demands. Finally, challenges and future perspectives in the development of more efficient oil-water separation materials and devices by nanoscale control are provided. It is expected that the biomimetic porous materials with nanoscale interface engineering will overcome the current challenges of oil-water emulsion separation, realizing their practical applications in the near future with continuous efforts in this field.

Facile Design and Fabrication of Superwetting Surfaces with Excellent Wear-Resistance

Preparation of mechanically durable superwetting surfaces is imperative, yet challenging for the wide range of real applications where high durability is required. Mechanical wear on superwetting surfaces usually degrades weak roughness, leading to loss of functions. In this study, wear-resistant superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces are prepared by anchoring reinforced coatings via adhesive-swelling and adhesive-bonding processes, respectively. The results of the sandpaper abrasion (grit no. 600, 24 kPa) show that superhydrophilic nylon/SiO₂ coatings and superhydrophobic polyurethane/TiO₂ coatings retain their functions after suffering the abrasion distances of 70 cm and more than 1000 cm, respectively. Reinforced coatings formed by consecutive roughness and improved adhesion between coatings and substrates are responsible for repeatedly generated superwettability after exposure to mechanical stresses and demonstrated to be feasible for designing wear-resistant superwetting surfaces. Furthermore, this novel architecture of "reinforced coating with consecutive roughness + high adhesion" may demand desired coating materials and reliable coating-fixing techniques for sustaining sufficient roughness and is superior to currently existing technologies in advancing wear-resistance of superwetting surfaces.

Durable, self-healing, superhydrophobic fabrics from fluorine-free, waterborne, polydopamine/alkyl silane coatings
