Short- and Long-Range Attractive Forces That Influence the Structure of Montmorillonite Osmotic Hydrates

Smectite phase separation is driven by hydration-mediated interfacial charge

Smectite clay minerals have an outsize impact on the response of clay-rich media to common stimuli, such as hydration and ion exchange, motivating extensive effort to understand behaviors resulting from these processes such as swelling and exfoliation. Smectites are common and historic systems for investigating colloidal and interfacial phenomena, with two swelling regimes commonly identified across myriad clays: osmotic swelling at high water activity and crystalline swelling at low water activity. However, no current swelling model seamlessly spans the full ranges of water, salt and clay content encountered in natural or engineered settings. Here, we show that structures previously rationalized as either osmotic or crystalline coexist as a rich array of distinct colloidal phases that differ by water content, layer stacking thickness, and curvature. We present an analytical model for intermolecular potentials among water, salt and clay in both mono- and divalent electrolytes that predicts swelling pressures across high and low water activities. Our results indicate that all clay swelling is osmotic swelling, but that the osmotic pressure of charged mineral interfaces becomes attractive and dominates that of the electrolyte at high clay activities. Global energy minima are often not reached on experimental timescales due to many local energy minima that promote long-lived intermediate states with vast differences in clay, ion, and water mobilities, leading to hyperdiffusive layer dynamics driven by variable hydration-mediated interfacial charge. Mechanistic Insight into Electron Transfer from Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Minerals to Fe (Hydr)oxides

Electron transfer (ET) is the essence of most biogeochemical processes related to element cycling and contaminant attenuation, whereas ET between different minerals and the controlling mechanism remain elusive. Here, we used surface-associated Fe(II) as a proxy to explore ET between reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and Fe (hydr)oxides in their coexisting systems. Results showed that ET could occur from rNAu-2 to ferrihydrite but not to goethite, and the ET amount was determined by the number of reactive sites and the reduction potential difference between rNAu-2 and ferrihydrite. ET proceeded mainly through the mineral-mineral interface, with a negligible contribution of dissolved Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺. Control experiments by adding K⁺ and increasing salinity together with characterizations by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectrometry, and atomic force microscopy suggested that ferrihydrite nanoparticles inserted the interlayer space in rNAu-2 where structural Fe(II) in rNAu-2 transferred electrons mainly through the basal plane to ferrihydrite. This study implicates the occurrence of ET between different redox-active minerals through the mineral-mineral interface. As minerals at different reduction potentials often coexist in soils/sediments, the mineral-mineral ET may play an important role in subsurface biogeochemical processes.

Effects of Size and Shape on the Tolerances for Misalignment and Probabilities for Successful Oriented Attachment of Nanoparticles

Oriented attachment (OA) of nanoparticles is an important pathway of crystal growth, but there is a lack of tools to model OA. Here, we present several simple models that relate the probability of achieving OA to basic geometric parameters, such as particle size, shape, and lattice periodicity. A Moiré-domain model is applied to understand twist misorientations between parallel surfaces, and it predicts that the range of twist angles yielding perfect OA is inversely related to the width of the contact area. This idea is explored further through a surface functional model, which investigates how patterns of crystallographic registration can drive the emergence of complex orientational energy landscapes. The energy landscapes are predicted to possess multiple local minima that can trap particles in imperfect alignments, and these local minima become deeper and more numerous as the contact area increases, which makes OA more challenging for large particles. A second set of models is presented to understand the sequence of events by which two crystallographic faces become coplanar after the collision. We use a central force approximation to predict the odds that two particle faces will attain coalignment when the particles collide with random misalignments, and we show that in the absence of special biasing forces, the probability of attaining alignment on a given face is roughly proportional to its solid angle as viewed from the center of the particle. The model thus predicts that OA is most favorable between well-faceted particles and becomes exceedingly unlikely for large spherical particles that express many microfacets.

Interaction between Hydrated Smectite Clay Particles as a Function of Salinity (0-1 M) and Counterion Type (Na, K, Ca)

Swelling clay minerals control the hydrologic and mechanical properties of many soils, sediments, and sedimentary rocks. This important and well-known phenomenon remains challenging to predict because it emerges from complex multiscale couplings between aqueous chemistry and colloidal interaction mechanics in nanoporous clay assemblages, for which predictive models remain elusive. In particular, the predominant theory of colloidal interactions across fluid films, the widely used Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek model, fails to predict the ubiquitous existence of stable swelling states at interparticle distances below 3 nm that are stabilized by specific inter-atomic interactions in overlapping electrical double layers between the charged clay surfaces. Atomistic simulations have the potential to generate detailed insights into the mechanisms of these interactions. Recently, we developed a metadynamics-based molecular dynamics simulation methodology that can predict the free energy of interaction between parallel smectite clay particles in a wide range of interparticle distances (from 0.3 to 3 nm) and salinities (from 0.0 to 1.0 M NaCl). Here, we extend this work by characterizing the sensitivity of interparticle interactions to counterion type (Na, K, Ca). We establish a detailed picture of the free energy of interaction of parallel clay particles across water films as the sum of five interaction mechanisms with different sensitivities to salinity, counterion type, and interparticle distance.

Potential of Mean Force for Face-Face Interactions between Pairs of 2:1 Clay Mineral Platelets

Bottom-up modeling of clay behavior from the molecular scale requires a detailed understanding of the free energy between pairs of clay platelets. We investigate the potential of mean force (PMF) for hydrated clays in face-to-face interactions with free energy perturbation (FEP) methods through molecular dynamics simulations using simple overlap sampling (SOS). We show that PMF results for open systems with one finite in-plane dimension are affected by migration of counterions from within the interlayer space compared with fully confined closed system conditions. We compare PMFs for two common 2:1 clay sheet minerals Illite (IMt-1) and Na-smectite. The PMFs for the open illite systems exhibit a strong attractive energy well at a basal layer separation, d = 11 Å and interlayer water content, w_IL = ∼0.4% while the attractive minimum for the closed system occurs at d = 12 Å, w_IL = 3.5%. In contrast, net repulsion occurs between pairs of Na-smectite platelets for both open and closed systems (for d < 15-16 Å). The free energy is closely related to the distribution of counterions; while K⁺ ions are bound closely to the surfaces of the illite platelets, Na⁺ ions are more spatially disperse. This PMF results contradict prior findings for Na-smectite and prompted further comparisons with other published results. We find that most of the published results do not represent accurately the free energy for face-face interactions between pairs of clay platelets that are effectively infinite (with width/thickness O[10⁴]). The PMF results presented in this paper form a reliable basis for mesoscale, coarse-grained modeling of illite and smectite particle assemblies. We show that the Gay-Berne potential provides a reasonable first-order model for upscaling, while the solvation potential proposed by Masoumi enables a more accurate representation of the computed PMFs.

Ion complexation waves emerge at the curved interfaces of layered minerals

Visualizing hydrated interfaces is of widespread interest across the physical sciences and is a particularly acute need for layered minerals, whose properties are governed by the structure of the electric double layer (EDL) where mineral and solution meet. Here, we show that cryo electron microscopy and tomography enable direct imaging of the EDL at montmorillonite interfaces in monovalent electrolytes with ångstrom resolution over micron length scales. A learning-based multiple-scattering reconstruction method for cryo electron tomography reveals ions bound asymmetrically on opposite sides of curved, exfoliated layers. We observe conserved ion-density asymmetry across stacks of interacting layers in cryo electron microscopy that is associated with configurations of inner- and outer-sphere ion-water-mineral complexes that we term complexation waves. Coherent X-ray scattering confirms that complexation waves propagate at room-temperature via a competition between ion dehydration and charge interactions that are coupled across opposing sides of a layer, driving dynamic transitions between stacked and aggregated states via layer exfoliation.

The structure of hydrated interfaces is essential for understanding of geochemical processes and behavior of layered minerals. The authors show that waves of hydrated ions emerge at curved aqueous interfaces and couple mineral deformation to the chemistry of the solution.

Clay Swelling: Role of Cations in Stabilizing/Destabilizing Mechanisms

The stepwise hydration of clay minerals has been observed repeatedly in studies, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Previous numerical studies confirmed the presence of one-water layer (1W) and two-water layer (2W) hydration states. However, the undisturbed transition between these hydration states has never been captured. Using molecular dynamics simulation, this study (i) simulated for the first time the free 1W-2W transition during clay hydration and (ii) identified the underlying mechanism to be the detachment of cations from the clay surface and the formation of a shell of water molecules around the cation. The swelling dynamics of clay was found to be affected by the clay charge, clay mineralogy, and counterions through complex cation-clay interactions, cation hydration capacity, and cation migration rate.

Modulation of soft glassy dynamics in aqueous suspensions of an anisotropic charged swelling clay through pH adjustment

HYPOTHESIS

Sodium-montmorillonite (Na-Mt) particles are geometrically anisometric that carry a pH dependent anisotropic surface charge. Therefore, it should be possible to manipulate the particle-particle interaction of colloidal range Na-Mt suspensions through pH changes which in turn should alter the soft glassy dynamics of Na-Mt suspensions.

EXPERIMENTS

Rheological experiments were used to probe the impact of pH mediated colloidal particle-particle interaction on the physical aging, linear viscoelastic response, and yield stress behavior of Na-Mt suspension.

FINDINGS

The temporal evolution of the storage modulus (G') was stronger in the acid regime (pH < 9.5) than the base (pH ≥ 9.5) pH regime. Horizontal shifting of the aging curves in the acid and base regimes led to aging time-H⁺ concentration and aging time-OH^- concentration superposition. An aging time-Na-Mt concentration superposition was also observed in both pH regimes. The critical stress associated with the viscosity bifurcation behavior increased linearly with G' but with different slopes for acid and base regime. We propose that positively charged patches on the Na-Mt particle edge merge with the characteristic surface as a function of H⁺ ions in the system. This leads to a strongly associated microstructure at low pH and a relatively weak but associated microstructure at natural pH, hence confirming the hypothesis.

Ion exchange in atomically thin clays and micas

The physical properties of clays and micas can be controlled by exchanging ions in the crystal lattice. Atomically thin materials can have superior properties in a range of membrane applications, yet the ion-exchange process itself remains largely unexplored in few-layer crystals. Here we use atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to study the dynamics of ion exchange and reveal individual ion binding sites in atomically thin and artificially restacked clays and micas. We find that the ion diffusion coefficient for the interlayer space of atomically thin samples is up to 10⁴ times larger than in bulk crystals and approaches its value in free water. Samples where no bulk exchange is expected display fast exchange at restacked interfaces, where the exchanged ions arrange in islands with dimensions controlled by the moiré superlattice dimensions. We attribute the fast ion diffusion to enhanced interlayer expandability resulting from weaker interlayer binding forces in both atomically thin and restacked materials. This work provides atomic scale insights into ion diffusion in highly confined spaces and suggests strategies to design exfoliated clay membranes with enhanced performance.

Assembly of cellulose nanocrystals and clay nanoplatelets studied by time-resolved X-ray scattering

Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to probe the assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and montmorillonite (MNT) over a wide concentration range in aqueous levitating droplets. Analysis of the SAXS curves of the one-component and mixed dispersions shows that co-assembly of rod-like CNC and MNT nanoplatelets is dominated by the interactions between the dispersed CNC particles and that MNT promotes gelation and assembly of CNC, which occurred at lower total volume fractions in the CNC:MNT than in the CNC-only dispersions. The CNC dispersions displayed a d ∝ φ-1/2 scaling and a low-q power-law exponent of 2.0-2.2 for volume fractions up to 35%, which indicates that liquid crystal assembly co-exists and competes with gelation.

Sorption Mechanisms of Chemicals in Soils

Sorption of chemicals onto soil particle surfaces is an important process controlling their availability for uptake by organisms and loss from soils to ground and surface waters. The mechanisms of chemical sorption are inner- and outer-sphere adsorption and precipitation onto mineral surfaces. Factors that determine the sorption behavior are properties of soil mineral and organic matter surfaces and properties of the sorbing chemicals (including valence, electron configuration, and hydrophobicity). Because soils are complex heterogeneous mixtures, measuring sorption mechanisms is challenging; however, advancements analytical methods have made direct determination of sorption mechanisms possible. In this review, historical and modern research that supports the mechanistic understanding of sorption mechanisms in soils is discussed. Sorption mechanisms covered include cation exchange, outer-sphere adsorption, inner-sphere adsorption, surface precipitation, and ternary adsorption complexes.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the colloidal interaction between smectite clay nanoparticles in liquid water

Colloidal interactions between clay nanoparticles have been studied extensively because of their strong influence on the hydrology and mechanics of many soils and sedimentary media. The predominant theory used to describe these interactions is the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model, a framework widely applied in colloidal and interfacial science that accurately predicts the interactions between charged surfaces across water films at distances greater than ~ 3 nm (i.e., ten water monolayers). Unfortunately, the DLVO model is inaccurate at the shorter interparticle distances that predominate in most subsurface environments. For example, it inherently cannot predict the existence of equilibrium states wherein clay particles adopt interparticle distances equal to the thickness of one, two, or three water monolayers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have the potential to provide detailed information on the free energy of interaction between clay nanoparticles; however, they have only been used to examine clay swelling and aggregation at interparticle distances below 1 nm. We present the first MD simulation predictions of the free energy of interaction of smectite clay nanoparticles in the entire range of interparticle distances from the large interparticle distances where the DLVO model is accurate (>3 nm) to the short-range swelling states where non-DLVO interactions predominate (<1 nm). Our simulations examine a range of salinities (0.0 to 1.0 M NaCl) and counterion types (Na, K, Ca) and establish a detailed picture of the breakdown of the DLVO model. In particular, they confirm previous theoretical suggestions of the existence of a strong non-DLVO attraction with a range of ~ 3 nm arising from specific ion-clay Coulomb interactions in the electrical double layer.

Ion exchange selectivity in clay is controlled by nanoscale chemical-mechanical coupling

Ion exchange in nanoporous clay-rich media plays an integral role in water, nutrient, and contaminant storage and transport. In montmorillonite (MMT), a common clay mineral in soils, sediments, and muds, the swelling and collapse of clay particles through the addition or removal of discrete molecular layers of water alters cation exchange selectivities in a poorly understood way. Here, we show that ion exchange is coupled to the dynamic delamination and restacking of clay layers, which creates a feedback between the hydration state of the exchanging cation and the composition of the clay interlayer. Particles with different hydration states are distinct phases with unique binding selectivities. Surprisingly, equilibrium achieved through thermal fluctuations in cation concentration and hydration state leads to the exchange of both ions and individual MMT layers between particles, a process we image directly with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy at cryogenic conditions (cryo-TEM). We introduce an exchange model that accounts for the binding selectivities of different phases, which is likely applicable to many charged colloidal or macromolecular systems in which the structural conformation is correlated with the activities of water and counterions within spatially confined compartments.

Electrostatic shape control of a charged molecular membrane from ribbon to scroll

Bilayers of amphiphiles can organize into spherical vesicles, nanotubes, planar, undulating, and helical nanoribbons, and scroll-like cochleates. These bilayer-related architectures interconvert under suitable conditions. Here, a charged, chiral amphiphile (palmitoyl-lysine, C₁₆-K₁) is used to elucidate the pathway for planar nanoribbon to cochleate transition induced by salt (NaCl) concentration. In situ small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), atomic force and cryogenic transmission electron microscopies (AFM and cryo-TEM) tracked these transformations over angstrom to micrometer length scales. AFM reveals that the large length (L) to width (W) ratio nanoribbons (L/W > 10) convert to sheets (L/W → 1) before rolling into cochleates. A theoretical model based on electrostatic and surface energies shows that the nanoribbons convert to sheets via a first-order transition, at a critical Debye length, with 2 shallow minima of the order of thermal energy at L/W >> 1 and at L/W = 1. SAXS shows that interbilayer spacing (D) in the cochleates scales linearly with the Debye length, and ranges from 13 to 35 nm for NaCl concentrations from 100 to 5 mM. Theoretical arguments that include electrostatic and elastic energies explain the membrane rolling and the bilayer separation-Debye length relationship. These models suggest that the salt-induced ribbon to cochleate transition should be common to all charged bilayers possessing an intrinsic curvature, which in the present case originates from molecular chirality. Our studies show how electrostatic interactions can be tuned to attain and control cochleate structures, which have potential for encapsulating, and releasing macromolecules in a size-selective manner.

Impact of Solution Chemistry and Particle Anisotropy on the Collective Dynamics of Oriented Aggregation

Although oriented aggregation of particles is a widely recognized mechanism of crystal growth, the impact of many fundamental parameters, such as crystallographically distinct interfacial structures, solution composition, and nanoparticle morphology, on the governing mechanisms and assembly kinetics are largely unexplored. Thus, the collective dynamics of systems exhibiting OA has not been predicted. In this context, we investigated the structure and dynamics of boehmite aggregation as a function of solution pH and ionic strength. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy shows that boehmite nanoplatelets assemble by oriented attachment on (010) planes. The coagulation rate constants obtained from dynamic light scattering during the early stages of aggregation span 7 orders of magnitude and cross both the reaction-limited and diffusion-limited regimes. Combining a simple scaling analysis with calculations for stability ratios and rotational/translational diffusivities of irregular particle shapes, the effects of orientation for irregular-shaped particles on the early stages of aggregation are understood via angular dependencies of van der Waals, electrostatic, and hydrodynamic interactions. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we found that a simple geometric parameter, namely, the contact area between two attaching nanoplatelets, presents a useful tool for correlating nanoparticle morphologies to the emerging larger-scale aggregates, hence explaining the unusually high fractal dimensions measured for boehmite aggregates. Our findings on nanocrystal transport and interactions provide insights toward the predictive understanding of nanoparticle growth, assembly, and aggregation, which will address critical challenges in developing synthesis strategies for nanostructured materials, understanding the evolution of geochemical reservoirs, and addressing many environmental problems.

A molecular modeling study for miscibility of polyimide/polythene mixing systems with/without compatibilizer

Molecular models were established to predict the miscibility of polyimide/polythene mixing systems and the enhancing effects of compatibilizer addition of maleic anhydride grafted polythene (MAH-g-PE). Molecular dynamics simulations were applied to investigate radial distribution functions and Flory-Huggins parameters of the mixing systems. Results show that polyimide/polythene is miscible to a certain degree, and the miscibility gets better after adding MAH-g-PE. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations display that micro-phase separation occurs in the polyimide/polythene mixing systems, however, effective interfaces appear between polyimide and polythene phases after adding MAH-g-PE. The results of molecular mechanics simulations indicate that the ability of mixing systems to resist stretch, compression and shear deformation increases after adding MAH-g-PE. This work offers a promising technique to predict miscibility properties for polyimide/polythene system prior to actual production and attempt to find a suitable compatibilizer for that system.

Impact of Intrinsic Structural Properties on the Hydration of 2:1 Layer Silicates

Several 2:1 layer silicates comprising di- and trioctahedral smectites of different layer charge between 0.2 and 0.4 per formula unit and a trioctahedral vermiculite were studied by an in situ method that allowed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra and water vapor sorption isotherms to be obtained simultaneously. The particle size and shape of the selected materials were determined using X-ray diffraction and gas adsorption analyses, which provided an estimate of the particle size with resulting edge site proportion. The aim of this study was to elucidate the hydration mechanism in 2:1 layer silicates during desorption and adsorption of water vapor. Domains in the desorption and adsorption of water vapor of the smectite samples with a slightly increasing slope were explained by a heterogeneous layer charge distribution, which enables the coexistence of different hydration states even under controlled conditions. Whereas hysteresis was observed over the entire isothermal range of the smectites, the isotherm of the vermiculite sample only showed hysteresis in the transition from the monohydrated state (1W) to the bihydrated state (2W). We also revealed that hysteresis is a function of the layer charge distribution, the achieved water content, and the particle size with resulting edge site contribution. Increasing the edge site proportions led to an increased hysteresis. The findings from the experimental FTIR/gravimetric analysis showed that the transition from 2W to 1W and backward is visible using infrared spectroscopy. The shifting of δ(H-O-H) was influenced by the layer charge and octahedral substitutions. As a final point, we use water as a sensor molecule to describe the OH groups of the octahedral sheet and show that the observed shifts result from a change in the tilting angle. Our experimental results were supported by ab initio thermodynamic simulations that revealed the different shifting behavior of δ(H-O-H) and δ(M ^x+-OH-N ^y+) related to the differences in surface charge density and octahedral compositions.

Clay, Water, and Salt: Controls on the Permeability of Fine-Grained Sedimentary Rocks

The ability to predict the permeability of fine-grained soils, sediments, and sedimentary rocks is a fundamental challenge in the geosciences with potentially transformative implications in subsurface hydrology. In particular, fine-grained sedimentary rocks (shale, mudstone) constitute about two-thirds of the sedimentary rock mass and play important roles in three energy technologies: petroleum geology, geologic carbon sequestration, and radioactive waste management. The problem is a challenging one that requires understanding the properties of complex natural porous media on several length scales. One inherent length scale, referred to hereafter as the mesoscale, is associated with the assemblages of large grains of quartz, feldspar, and carbonates over distances of tens of micrometers. Its importance is highlighted by the existence of a threshold in the core scale mechanical properties and regional scale energy uses of shale formations at a clay content X_clay ≈ 1/3, as predicted by an ideal packing model where a fine-grained clay matrix fills the gaps between the larger grains. A second important length scale, referred to hereafter as the nanoscale, is associated with the aggregation and swelling of clay particles (in particular, smectite clay minerals) over distances of tens of nanometers. Mesoscale phenomena that influence permeability are primarily mechanical and include, for example, the ability of contacts between large grains to prevent the compaction of the clay matrix. Nanoscale phenomena that influence permeability tend to be chemomechanical in nature, because they involve strong impacts of aqueous chemistry on clay swelling. The second length scale remains much less well characterized than the first, because of the inherent challenges associated with the study of strongly coupled nanoscale phenomena. Advanced models of the nanoscale properties of fine-grained media rely predominantly on the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, a mean field theory of colloidal interactions that accurately predicts clay swelling in a narrow range of conditions (low salinity, low compaction, Na⁺ counterion). An important feature of clay swelling that is not predicted by these models is the coexistence, in most conditions of aqueous chemistry and dry bulk density, of two types of pores between parallel smectite particles: mesopores with a pore width of >3 nm that are controlled by long-range interactions (the osmotic swelling regime) and nanopores with a pore width <1 nm that are controlled by short-range interactions (the crystalline swelling regime). Nanogeochemical characterization and simulation techniques, including coarse-grained and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, hold significant promise for the development of advanced constitutive relations that predict this coexistence and its dependence on aqueous chemistry.
