Simplified Approach to Work Function Modulation in Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

Development of photoluminescent artificial nacre-like nanocomposite from polyester resin and graphene oxide

Long-lasting phosphorescent nacre-like material was simply prepared from a nanocomposite of inorganic and organic materials. Low molecular weight unsaturated polyester (PET), graphene oxide (GO), and nanoparticles of rare-earth activated aluminate pigment were used in the preparation process of an organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposite. Using methylethylketone peroxide (MEKP) as a hardener, we were able to develop a fluid solution that hardens within minutes at room temperature. Covalent and hydrogen bonds were introduced between the polyester resin and graphene oxide nanosheets. The interface interactions of those bonds resulted in toughness, excellent tensile strength, and high durability. The produced nacre substrates demonstrated long-persistent and reversible luminescence. The excitation of the produced nacre substrates at 365 nm resulted in a 524 nm emission. After being exposed to UV light, the photoluminescent nacre substrates became green. The increased superhydrophobic activity of the produced nacre substrates was achieved without affecting their physico-mechanical properties.

Interface Engineering of Hematite with Nacre-like Catalytic Multilayers for Solar Water Oxidation

An efficient water oxidation photoanode based on hematite has been designed and fabricated by tailored assembly of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and cobalt polyoxometalate (Co-POM) water oxidation catalysts into a nacre-like multilayer architecture on a hematite photoanode. The deposition of catalytic multilayers provides a high photocatalytic efficiency and photoelectrochemical stability to underlying hematite photoanodes. Compared to the bare counterpart, the catalytic multilayer electrode exhibits a significantly higher photocurrent density and large cathodic shift in onset potential (∼369 mV) even at neutral pH conditions due to the improved charge transport and catalytic efficiency from the rational and precise assembly of GO and Co-POM. Unexpectedly, the polymeric base layer deposited prior to the catalytic multilayers improves the performance even more by facilitating the transfer of photogenerated holes for water oxidation through modification of the flat band potential of the underlying photoelectrode. This approach utilizing polymeric base and catalytic multilayers provides an insight into the design of highly efficient photoelectrodes and devices for artificial photosynthesis.

Electronic Structure of a Self-Assembled Monolayer with Two Surface Anchors: 6-Mercaptopurine on Au(111)

The electronic structure of aromatic and aliphatic thiols on Au(111) has been extensively studied in relation to possible applications in molecular electronics. In this work, the effect on the electronic structure of an additional anchor to the S-Au bond using 6-mercaptopurine as a model system has been investigated. Results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) confirm that this molecule adsorbs on Au(111) with S-Au and iminic N-Au bonds. Combined ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT data reveal that formation of the 6MP self-assembled monolayer generates a molecular dipole perpendicular to the surface, with negative charges residing at the metal/monolayer interface and positive charges at the monolayer/vacuum interface, which lowers the substrate work function. Scanning tunneling microscopy shows two surface molecular domains: a well-ordered rectangular lattice where molecules are tilted on average 30° with respect to the substrate and aligned 6MP islands where molecules are standing upright. Finally, we found a new electronic state located at -1.7 eV with respect to the Fermi level that corresponds to a localized π molecular state, while the state corresponding to the N-Au bond is hybridized with Au d electrons and stabilized at much lower energies (-3 eV).
