Ice Layer Spreading along a Solid Substrate during Solidification of Supercooled Water: Experiments and Modeling

High-speed cryo-microscopy reveals that ice-nucleating proteins of Pseudomonas syringae trigger freezing at hydrophobic interfaces

Ice-nucleating proteins (INpro) trigger the freezing of supercooled water droplets relevant to atmospheric, biological, and technological applications. The high ice nucleation activity of INpro isolated from the bacteria Pseudomonas syringae could be linked to the aggregation of proteins at the bacterial membrane or at the air-water interface (AWI) of droplets. Here, we imaged freezing onsets, providing direct evidence of these proposed mechanisms. High-speed cryo-microscopy identified the onset location of freezing in droplets between two protein-repellent glass slides. INpro from sterilized P. syringae (Snomax) statistically favored nucleation at the AWI of the droplets. Removing cellular fragments by filtration or adding surfactants increased the frequency of nucleation events at the AWI. On the other hand, cultivated intact bacteria cells or lipid-free droplets nucleated ice without an affinity to the AWI. Overall, we provide visual evidence that INpro from P. syringae trigger freezing at hydrophobic interfaces, such as the AWI or the bacterial membrane, with important mechanistic implications for applications of INpro.

Kinetics formulation for Two-Dimensional Growth Behavior of Water/Ice Interface on Si Substrate

Sublimation drying is used in the drying process of semiconductor device manufacturing. However, the solidification behavior mechanics of sublimation agents on substrates has not been clarified. Therefore, the properties of solidified films within substrate surfaces can become nonuniform, leading to their collapse. This study aimed to analyze the interface growth behavior during the cooling and solidification of a water/ice system as a basic case and to clarify the dynamic mechanism of the solidification behavior of liquid films on Si substrates. The solidification behavior of a water/ice system on Si substrates was captured on a video at different cooling rates. The recorded video was subjected to a digital image analysis to examine the crystal morphology and quantify the interface growth rate. The least-squares method with kinetic formulas was used to evaluate the feasibility of fitting the temperature variation to the interface growth rate. A visual examination of the morphology of interfacial growth revealed that it can be classified into four morphologies. The proposed kinetic equation describes the experimental results regarding the temperature dependence of the interfacial growth rate. Through image analysis, the interface growth rate of water and ice was quantified, and an evaluation formula was proposed.

Internal and interfacial microstructure characterization of ice droplets on surfaces by X-ray computed tomography

HYPOTHESIS

Characterizing the microstructure of an ice/surface interface and its effect on the icephobic behavior of surfaces remains a significant challenge. Introducing X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) can provide unprecedented insights into the internal (porosity) and interfacial structures, i.e. wetting regime, between (super)hydrophobic surfaces and ice by visualizing these optically inaccessible regions.

EXPERIMENTS

Frozen droplets with controlled volume were deposited on top of metallic and polymeric substrates with different levels of wettability. Different modes of XCT (3D and 4D) were utilized to obtain information on the internal and interfacial structure of the ice/surface system. The results were supplemented by conventional surface analysis techniques, including optical profilometry and contact angle measurements.

FINDINGS

Using XCT on ice/surface systems, the 3D and 4D (imaging with temporal resolution) structural information can be visualized. From these datasets, qualitative and quantitative results were obtained, not only for characterizing the interface but also for analyzing the entire droplet/surface system, e.g., measurement of porosity size, shape, and location. These results highlight the potential of XCT in the characterization of both droplets and substrates and proves that the technique can aid to develop hydrophobic surfaces for use as icephobic materials.

Contact Line Catch Up by Growing Ice Crystals

The effect of freezing on contact line motion is a scientific challenge in the understanding of the solidification of capillary flows. In this Letter, we experimentally investigate the spreading and freezing of a water droplet on a cold substrate. We demonstrate that solidification stops the spreading because the ice crystals catch up with the advancing contact line. Indeed, we observe the formation and growth of ice crystals along the substrate during the drop spreading, and show that their velocity equals the contact line velocity when the drop stops. Modeling the growth of the crystals, we predict the shape of the crystal front and show that the substrate thermal properties play a major role on the frozen drop radius.

Dynamics of Dendritic Ice Freezing in Confinement

We use high-speed photography to observe the dendritic freezing of ice between two closely spaced parallel plates. Measuring the propagation speeds of dendrites, we investigate whether there is a confinement-induced thermal influence upon the speed beyond that provided by a single surface. Plates of thermally insulating plastic and moderately thermally conductive glass are used alone and in combination, at temperatures between -10.6 and -4.8 °C, with separations between 17 and 135 μm wide. No effect of confinement was detected for propagation on glass surfaces, but a possible slowing of propagation speed was seen between insulating plates. The pattern of dendritic growth was also studied, with a change from curving to straight dendrites being strongly associated with a switch from a glass to a plastic substrate.

Air humidity effects on water-drop icing

The canonical problem of the icing of a water drop lying on a cold substrate is revisited to take into account the effects of atmospheric conditions on the icing front kinetics and on the tip formation. Here, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically that the air humidity induces liquid-vapor phase change at the icing droplet interface and that the associated heat transfer has a strong influence on both the icing front kinetics and the iced drop shape. The experimental results obtained in this study, as well as results from literature, compare well to a modified Stefan model accounting for the effects of humidity, showing a good agreement with the experimental data of both the front kinetics and tip angle.

Using Excimeric Fluorescence to Study How the Cooling Rate Determines the Behavior of Naphthalenes in Freeze-Concentrated Solutions: Vitrification and Crystallization

We utilized fluorescence spectroscopy to learn about the molecular arrangement of naphthalene (Np) and 1-methylnaphthalene (MeNp) in frozen aqueous solutions. The freezing induces pronounced compound aggregation in the freeze-concentrated solution (FCS) in between the ice grains. The fluorescence spectroscopy revealed prevalent formation of a vitrified solution and minor crystallization of aromatic compounds. The FCS is shown as a specific environment, differing significantly from not only the pure compounds but also the ice surfaces. The results indicate marked disparity between the behavior of the Np and the MeNp; the cooling rate has a major impact on the former but not on the latter. The spectrum of the Np solution frozen at a faster cooling rate (ca 20 K/min) exhibited a temperature-dependent spectral behavior, whereas the spectrum of the solution frozen at a slower rate (ca 2 K/min) did not alter before melting. We interpret the observation through considering the varied composition of the FCS: Fast freezing leads to a higher water content expressed by the plasticizing effect, allowing molecular rearrangement, while slow cooling produces a more concentrated and drier environment. The experiments were conceived as generalizable for environmentally relevant pollutants and human-made freezing.

Inkjet printing-based fabrication of microscale 3D ice structures

This study proposed a method for fabricating 3D microstructures of ice without a supporting material. The inkjet printing process was performed in a low humidity environment to precisely control the growth direction of the ice crystals. In the printing process, water droplets (volume = hundreds of picoliters) were deposited onto the previously formed ice structure, after which they immediately froze. Different 3D structures (maximum height = 2000 µm) could be formed by controlling the substrate temperature, ejection frequency and droplet size. The growth direction was dependent on the landing point of the droplet on the previously formed ice structure; thus, 3D structures could be created with high degrees of freedom.

Numerical Simulation of Supercooled Water Droplets Impacting Ice with Rapid Crystal Growth Taken into Consideration

The impact of a supercooled water droplet is considerably affected by the rapid crystal growth when the duration of the recalescence stage is comparable to the typical time of impact. However, the recalescence stage is generally neglected in the existing numerical simulations using the enthalpy-porosity method. We propose a subregion function method to deal with the rapid crystal growth during the impact of supercooled water droplets. A restricted region named the dendrite cloud region is defined in the method, and the phase change is enabled only in this dendrite cloud region while the evolution of this region is determined by the initial nucleation sites and the dendritic growth velocity of the ice. The impacts of supercooled water droplets on a smooth ice surface are simulated using a three-phase volume-of-fluid method coupled with the subregion function method. The calculated residual ice layer thickness at the impact center is consistent with previous experimental results. This subregion function method can also be extended to the numerical simulations of other types of fluid flows involving rapid solidification.

Fast-freezing kinetics inside a droplet impacting on a cold surface

Freezing or solidification of impacting droplets is omnipresent in nature and technology, be it a rain droplet falling on a supercooled surface; in inkjet printing, where often molten wax is used; in additive manufacturing or metal-production processes; or in extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) for the chip production, where molten tin is used to generate the EUV radiation. For many of these industrial applications, a detailed understanding of the solidification process is essential. Here, by adopting an optical technique in the context of freezing-namely, total-internal reflection (TIR)-we elucidate the freezing kinetics during the solidification of a droplet while it impacts on an undercooled surface. We show that at sufficiently high undercooling, a peculiar freezing morphology exists that involves sequential advection of frozen fronts from the center of the droplet to its boundaries. This phenomenon is examined by combining elements of classical nucleation theory to the large-scale hydrodynamics on the droplet scale, bringing together two subfields which traditionally have been quite separated. Furthermore, we report a self-peeling phenomenon of a frozen splat that is driven by the existence of a transient crystalline state during solidification.

How soap bubbles freeze

Droplets or puddles tend to freeze from the propagation of a single freeze front. In contrast, videographers have shown that as soap bubbles freeze, a plethora of growing ice crystals can swirl around in a beautiful effect visually reminiscent of a snow globe. However, the underlying physics of how bubbles freeze has not been studied. Here, we characterize the physics of soap bubbles freezing on an icy substrate and reveal two distinct modes of freezing. The first mode, occurring for isothermally supercooled bubbles, generates a strong Marangoni flow that entrains ice crystals to produce the aforementioned snow globe effect. The second mode occurs when using a cold stage in a warm ambient, resulting in a bottom-up freeze front that eventually halts due to poor conduction along the bubble. Blending experiments, scaling analysis, and numerical methods, the dynamics of the freeze fronts and Marangoni flows are characterized.

Hydrophobicity, Freezing Delay, and Morphology of Laser-Treated Aluminum Surfaces

Until recently, superhydrophobicity was considered as a hint to predict surface icephobicity, an association of concepts that is by no means universal and that has been proven to depend on different experimental factors and material properties, including the actual morphology and chemical state of surfaces. This work presents a systematic study of the wetting and freezing properties of aluminum Al6061, a common material widely used in aviation, after being subjected to nanosecond pulsed IR laser treatments to modify its surface roughness and morphology. All treated samples, independent of their surface finishing state, presented initially an unstable hydrophilic wetting behavior that naturally evolved with time to reach hydrophobicity or even superhydrophobicity. To stabilize the surface state and to bestow the samples with a permanent and stable hydrophobic character, laser-treated surfaces were covered with a thin layer of CF _x prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. A systematic comparison between freezing delay (FD) and wetting properties of water droplets onto these plasma-/polymer-modified laser-treated surfaces that, under conditions where a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism prevails, surface morphology rather than the actual value of the surface roughness parameter the key feature for long FD times. In particular, it is found that surface morphologies rendering a Cassie-Baxter wetting regime longer FDs than those characterized by a Wenzel-like wetting state. It is that laser treatment, with or without additional coverage with thin CF _x coatings, affects wetting and ice formation behaviors and might be an efficient procedure to mitigate icing problems on metal surfaces.

Stains from Freeze-Dried Drops

The evaporation of droplets of colloidal suspensions onto a surface is a common tool to achieve surface coatings and self-assembly. However, because of the spontaneous flow developing within an evaporating drop, the deposit is difficult to control, and an unwanted ring-like structure often forms, with particles aggregating along the drop edge. Here, by freezing the drops before sublimating them in dry air we propose a new approach that produces a different kind of stain where most particles are clustered in the center of the drops instead. We demonstrate that these deposits can be continuously tuned from wide but thin to concentrated and thick by varying the droplet's aspect ratio. Unlike evaporated liquid drops, stains from freeze-dried drops do not depend on the drying conditions or substrate roughness and possess a porous and branched microstructure somewhat reminiscent of freeze-casted ceramics. With these stains being governed by the freezing process rather than the drying, this opens alternative ways to control colloidal deposits.

Dendritic Growth Model Involving Interface Kinetics for Supercooled Water

The dendritic growth of ice in supercooled water droplets is studied theoretically and experimentally. The measured dendritic growth velocity of ice shows a good agreement with the prediction of the Langer and Müller-Krumbhaar (LM-K) growth model at supercoolings less than 7 K, whereas an increasing overestimation in the latter is observed as the droplets are further supercooled. Therefore, the LM-K dendritic growth model is modified by considering the influence of interface kinetics. In the modified model, a dendrite grows in the limit of marginal stability coupled with diffusion at the liquid-solid interface, and the interface kinetics supercooling is introduced to predict the dendritic growth velocity. The interface kinetics factor is determined by fitting the experimental dendritic growth velocity within the framework of the modified model. This modification to the LM-K model well describes the dendritic growth of ice in water supercooled up to 25 K. It provides a solution to the dendritic growth of ice in the high-supercooling regime and can serve as a reliable input for studies on icing problems in engineering fields.

High-speed imaging of ice nucleation in water proves the existence of active sites

Understanding how surfaces direct nucleation is a complex problem that limits our ability to predict and control crystal formation. We here address this challenge using high-speed imaging to identify and quantify the sites at which ice nucleates in water droplets on the two natural cleavage faces of macroscopic feldspar substrates. Our data show that ice nucleation only occurs at a few locations, all of which are associated with micron-size surface pits. Similar behavior is observed on α-quartz substrates that lack cleavage planes. These results demonstrate that substrate heterogeneities are the salient factor in promoting nucleation and therefore prove the existence of active sites. We also provide strong evidence that the activity of these sites derives from a combination of surface chemistry and nanoscale topography. Our results have implications for the nucleation of many materials and suggest new strategies for promoting or inhibiting nucleation across a wide range of applications.

A sudden-melting event during water freezing inside a copper well

We studied the freezing of super-cooled water inside a millimeter-sized copper well by confocal microscopy. During freezing, we surprisingly observed a novel melting scenario, which we call a 'sudden-melting event': the ice directly above the bottom substrate suddenly melts in the late stage of the freezing process, while the system is continuously being cooled. After this event, an empty gap around 10 μm to 20 μm between the substrate and the bulk ice is formed. Because this gap occupies the majority of the area of the bottom substrate, the adhesion between the bulk ice and the substrate is greatly reduced: the adhesion force decreases by more than 50% compared with the flat-substrate situation. We further discovered that air dissolved in water plays a crucial role in this melting event: the air excluded by water freezing produces inter-connecting channels in the bulk ice, which transport the warm water produced by latent heat to the substrate which causes the sudden melting event. Because this event makes the contact between ice and substrate very poor, and greatly reduces ice adhesion, our observation may lead to a promising anti-icing method on solid substrates. Compared to the prevalent super-hydrophobic surface technique, our approach only requires millimeter-sized wells instead of complex microscopic textures. Therefore, it is much easier and cheaper to produce, as well as much more robust for large-scale practical applications.
