Control of the Porous Structure of Polystyrene Particles Obtained by Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation

Interface Engineered Microcellular Magnetic Conductive Polyurethane Nanocomposite Foams for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Lightweight microcellular polyurethane (TPU)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/ nickel-coated CNTs (Ni@CNTs)/polymerizable ionic liquid copolymer (PIL) composite foams are prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). CNTs and Ni@CNTs modified by PIL provide more heterogeneous nucleation sites and inhibit the aggregation and combination of microcellular structure. Compared with TPU/CNTs, the TPU/CNTs/PIL and TPU/CNTs/Ni@CNTs/PIL composite foams with smaller microcellular structures have a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). The evaporate time regulates the microcellular structure, improves the conductive network of composite foams and reduces the microcellular size, which strengthens the multiple reflections of electromagnetic wave. The TPU/10CNTs/10Ni@CNTs/PIL foam exhibits slightly higher SE values (69.9 dB) compared with TPU/20CNTs/PIL foam (53.3 dB). The highest specific EMI SE of TPU/20CNTs/PIL and TPU/10CNTs/10Ni@CNTs/PIL reaches up to 187.2 and 211.5 dB/(g cm^-3), respectively. The polarization losses caused by interfacial polarization between TPU substrates and conductive fillers, conduction loss caused by conductive network of fillers and magnetic loss caused by Ni@CNT synergistically attenuate the microwave energy.

Durable and Multifunctional Superhydrophobic Coatings with Excellent Joule Heating and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performance for Flexible Sensing Electronics

Superhydrophobic coatings have wide applications in many fields. However, superhydrophobic and smart coatings with multifunctionality and their applications in flexible sensing electronics are seldom reported. In this work, durable, superhydrophobic, and anticorrosive coatings with excellent Joule heating and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance are prepared on the basis of Ag precursor reduction and synchronous nonsolvent induced phase separation. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated with the copolymer (polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene: SEBS) are uniformly distributed on the target substrate, forming mechanically durable conductive network. SEBS could not only endow the surface coating with superhydrophobicity but also improve the interaction among individual Ag nanoparticles and the interfacial adhesion between AgNPs and the substrate. The multifunctional coating possesses excellent anticorrosive, self-cleaning, and deicing properties. The high conductivity endows the coatings with excellent Joule heating and EMI shielding performance. The multifunctional coating can be applied to a variety of different substrates with outstanding surface stability and reliability. The conductivity for the smart coating can reach as high as 107 S/cm with the EMI shielding effectiveness up to 37.8 dB. At a low applied voltage of 1 V, the conductive fabric can be heated up to over 80 °C in 60 s and displays good recyclability during dozens of heating and cooling cycles. The Joule heating-induced temperature increase could be used for efficient surface deicing. When used for the flexible and wearable strain sensors, the multifunctional coating has a very low strain detection limit of 0.5% and large sensitivity (with the gauge factor as high as 1075) and excellent repeatability. In addition, it can be used for precisely monitoring different body motions, including both large and subtle joint movement.

Rapid mineralization of hierarchical poly(l-lactic acid)/poly(ε-caprolactone) nanofibrous scaffolds by electrodeposition for bone regeneration

Introduction: Hierarchical nanofibrous scaffolds are emerging as a promising bone repair material due to their high cell adhesion activity and nutrient permeability. However, the existing method for hierarchical nanofibrous scaffolds fabrication is complicated and not perfectly suitable for further biomedical application in view of both structure and function. In this study, we constructed a hierarchical nanofibrous poly (l-lactic acid)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PLLA/PCL) scaffold and further evaluated its bone healing ability. Methods: The hierarchical PLLA/PCL nanofibrous scaffold (PLLA/PCL) was prepared by one-pot TIPS and then rapidly mineralized at room temperature by an electrochemical deposition technique. After electrode-positioning at 2 V for 2 hrs, a scaffold coated with hydroxyapatite (M-PLLA/PCL) could be obtained. Results: The pore size of the M-PLLA/PCL scaffold was hierarchically distributed so as to match the biophysical structure for osteoblast growth. The M-PLLA/PCL scaffold showed better cell proliferation and osteogenesis activity compared to the PLLA/PCL scaffold. Further in vivo bone repair studies indicated that the M-PLLA/PCL scaffold could accelerate defect healing in 12 weeks. Conclusion: The results of this study implied that the as-prepared hydroxyapatite coated hierarchical PLLA/PCL nanofibrous scaffolds could be developed as a promising material for efficient bone tissue repair after carefully tuning the TIPS and electrodeposition parameters.

Zwitterionic Membrane via Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation: A Computer Simulation Study

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) was adopted to study the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process during a pH-responsive poly(ether sulfone) membrane preparation with a zwitterionic copolymer poly(ether sulfone)- block-polycarboxybetaine methacrylate (PES-b-PCBMA) as the blending additive. The membrane formation process and final morphology were analyzed. Simulation results show that the hydrophilic PCBMA segments enrich on the membrane surface by surface segregation and exhibit pH-responsive behavior, which is attributed to the deprotonation of the carboxylic acid group. With the polymer concentration increasing, both the shrinkage of the membrane and the flexibility of the system decrease, which also reduce the effect of surface segregation. By adjusting the blend ratio of PES-b-PCBMA with PES from 5% to 15%, the surface coverage of PCBMA segments on the membrane can be regulated. This work contributes to a better understanding on the mechanism of NIPS and can serve as a guide for the design of the polymer blend membrane.

Microfluidic solvent extraction of poly(vinyl alcohol) droplets: effect of polymer structure on particle and capsule formation

We investigate the formation of poly(vinyl alcohol) microparticles by the selective extraction of aqueous polymer solution droplets, templated by microfluidics and subsequently immersed in a non-solvent bath. The role of polymer molecular mass (18-105 kg mol-1), degree of hydrolysis (88-99%) and thus solubility, and initial solution concentration (0.01-10% w/w) are quantified. Monodisperse droplets with radii ranging from 50 to 500 μm were produced at a flow-focusing junction with carrier phase hexadecane and extracted into ethyl acetate. Solvent exchange and extraction result in droplet shrinkage, demixing, coarsening and phase-inversion, yielding polymer microparticles with well-defined dimensions and internal microstructure. Polymer concentration, varied from below the overlap concentration c* to above the concentrated crossover c**, as estimated by viscosity measurements, was found to have the largest impact on the final particle size and extraction timescale, while polymer mass and hydrolysis played a secondary role. These results are consistent with the observation that the average polymer concentration upon solidification greatly exceeds c**, and that the internal microparticle porosity is largely unchanged. However, reducing the initial polymer concentration to well below c* (approximately 100×) and increasing droplet size yields thin-walled (100's of nm) capsules which controllably crumple upon extraction. The symmetry of the process can be readily broken by imposing extraction conditions at an impermeable surface, yielding large, buckled, cavity morphologies. Based on these results, we establish robust design criteria for polymer capsules and particles, demonstrated here for poly(vinyl alcohol), with well-defined shape, dimensions and internal microstructure.
