Supported Mn3O4 Nanosystems for Hydrogen Production through Ethanol Photoreforming

Synergistic Effect of Redox Dual PdO x /MnO x Cocatalysts on the Enhanced H2 Production Potential of a SnS/α-Fe2O3 Heterojunction via Ethanol Photoreforming

In the quest for optimal H₂ evolution (HE) through ethanol photoreforming, a dual cocatalyst-modified heterocatalyst strategy is utilized. Tin(II) sulfide (SnS) was hybridized with α-Fe₂O₃ to form the heterocatalyst FeOSnS with a p-n heterojunction structure as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-vis diffusive reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. PdO _x and PdO _x /MnO _x cocatalysts were loaded onto the FeOSnS heterocatalyst through the impregnation method, as verified by high-resolution transform electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and elemental mapping. Photocatalytic ethanol photoreforming resulted in the production of H₂ as the main product with a selectivity of 99% and some trace amounts of CH₄. The FeOSnS2-PdO _x 2%/MnO _x 1% photocatalyst achieved the highest HE rate of 1654 μmol/g, attributed to the synergistic redox contribution of the PdO _x and MnO _x species.

Pivotal role of N and Bi doping in CQD/Mn3O4 composite structure with outstanding visible photoactivity

The roles of N and Bi doped CQDs have been checked. N-doping resulted in exclusive optical and electronic properties in the CQDs while preserving their intrinsic properties such as quantum size effect, surface area and compatibility.

Sensing Nitrogen Mustard Gas Simulant at the ppb Scale via Selective Dual-Site Activation at Au/Mn3O4 Interfaces

The efficient detection of chemical warfare agents (CWAs), putting at stake human life and global safety, is of paramount importance in the development of reliable sensing devices for safety applications. Herein, we present the fabrication of Mn₃O₄-based nanocomposites containing noble metal particles for the gas-phase detection of a simulant of vesicant nitrogen mustard, i.e., di(propylene glycol) monomethyl ether (DPGME). The target materials were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition of manganese oxide on Al₂O₃ substrates and subsequent functionalization with silver or gold via radio frequency sputtering. The obtained high purity composites, characterized by an intimate metal/oxide contact, yielded an outstanding efficiency in the detection of DPGME. In particular, sensing of the latter analyte with an ultralow detection limit of 0.6 ppb could be performed selectively with respect to other CWA simulants. In addition, the tuneability of selectivity patterns as a function of metal nanoparticle nature paves the way to the development of efficient and selective devices for practical end uses.

Clean synthesis of RGO/Mn3O4 nanocomposite with well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles as a high-performance catalyst for hydroquinone oxidation

In this study, a well-dispersed Pd nanoparticle (NP)-supported RGO/Mn₃O₄ (G/M/Pd) composite was synthesized by a clean synthetic route, where galvanic replacement reaction simply occurred between Mn₃O₄ and a palladium salt, thereby avoiding the use of harsh reducing and capping agents. The G/M/Pd composite served as a robust catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) to benzoquinone (BQ) with H₂O₂ in an aqueous solution. Oxidation was completed in only 4 min, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 3613 h^-1; this TOF is one hundred times those of previously reported Pd- and Ag-based catalysts. The superior performance was related to the electronic inductive effect between Mn₃O₄ and Pd NPs, which was verified by density functional theory calculations. Trapping experiments revealed that the oxidation of HQ was considerably related to the ·OH radicals generated from the decomposition of H₂O₂. In addition, the influencing factors were further investigated, including catalyst and HQ concentrations, solution pH, solvents, and various inorganic and organic interferences. Moreover, the G/M/Pd catalyst exhibits diverse applications for the catalytic oxidation of HQ derivatives with high TOFs.
