Bio-Inspired Underwater Super Oil-Repellent Coatings for Anti-Oil Pollution

Bioinspired multi-scale interface design for wet gas sensing based on rational water management

Natural organisms have evolved multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces with optimized mass transport pathways in biological fluid environments, which sheds light on developing artificial counterparts with improved wet gas sensing abilities and practical applications. Herein, we highlighted current advances in wet gas sensing taking advantage of optimized mass transport pathways endowed by multi-scale interface design. Common moisture resistance (e.g., employing moisture resistant sensing materials, post-modifying moisture resistant coatings, physical heating for moisture resistance, and self-removing hydroxyl groups) and moisture absorption (e.g., employing moisture absorption sensing materials and post-modifying moisture absorption coatings) strategies for wet gas sensing were discussed. Then, the design principles of bioinspired multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces were provided, including macro-level condensation mediation, micro/nano-level transport pathway adjustment and molecular level moisture-proof design. Finally, perspectives on constructing bioinspired multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces were presented, which will not only deepen our understanding of the underlying principles, but also promote practical applications.

Nature-inspired adhesive systems

Many organisms in nature thrive in intricate habitats through their unique bio-adhesive surfaces, facilitating tasks such as capturing prey and reproduction. It's important to note that the remarkable adhesion properties found in these natural biological surfaces primarily arise from their distinct micro- and nanostructures and/or chemical compositions. To create artificial surfaces with superior adhesion capabilities, researchers delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms of these captivating adhesion phenomena to draw inspiration. This article provides a systematic overview of various biological surfaces with different adhesion mechanisms, focusing on surface micro- and nanostructures and/or chemistry, offering design principles for their artificial counterparts. Here, the basic interactions and adhesion models of natural biological surfaces are introduced first. This will be followed by an exploration of research advancements in natural and artificial adhesive surfaces including both dry adhesive surfaces and wet/underwater adhesive surfaces, along with relevant adhesion characterization techniques. Special attention is paid to stimulus-responsive smart artificial adhesive surfaces with tunable adhesive properties. The goal is to spotlight recent advancements, identify common themes, and explore fundamental distinctions to pinpoint the present challenges and prospects in this field.

Nature-Inspired Wet Drug Delivery Platforms

Nature has created various organisms with unique chemical components and multi-scale structures (e.g., foot proteins, toe pads, suckers, setose gill lamellae) to achieve wet adhesion functions to adapt to their complex living environments. These organisms can provide inspirations for designing wet adhesives with mediated drug release behaviors in target locations of biological surfaces. They exhibit conformal and enhanced wet adhesion, addressing the bottleneck of weaker tissue interface adhesion in the presence of body fluids. Herein, it is focused on the research progress of different wet adhesion and bioinspired fabrications, including adhesive protein-based adhesion and inspired adhesives (e.g., mussel adhesion); capillarity and Stefan adhesion and inspired adhesive surfaces (e.g., tree frog adhesion); suction-based adhesion and inspired suckers (e.g., octopus' adhesion); interlocking and friction-based adhesion and potential inspirations (e.g., mayfly larva and teleost adhesion). Other secreted protein-induced wet adhesion is also reviewed and various suckers for other organisms and their inspirations. Notably, one representative application scenario of these bioinspired wet adhesives is highlighted, where they function as efficient drug delivery platforms on target tissues and/or organs with requirements of both controllable wet adhesion and optimized drug release. Finally, the challenges of these bioinspired wet drug delivery platforms in the future is presented.

Ultrasmall Cu3(PO4)2 Nanoparticles Reinforced Hydrogel Membrane for Super-antifouling Oil/Water Emulsion Separation

Membrane fouling is a persistent and crippling challenge for oily wastewater treatment due to the high susceptibility of membranes to contamination. A feasible strategy is to design a robust and stable hydration layer on the membrane surface to prevent contaminates. A hydrogel illustrates a distinct category of materials with outstanding antifouling performance but is limited by its weak mechanical property. In this research, we report a reinforced hydrogel on a membrane by in situ growing ultrasmall hydrophilic Cu₃(PO₄)₂ nanoparticles in a copper alginate (CuAlg) layer via metal-ion-coordination-mediated mineralization. The embeddedness of hydrophilic Cu₃(PO₄)₂ nanoparticle with a size of 3-5 nm endows the CuAlg/Cu₃(PO₄)₂ composite hydrogel with enhanced mechanical property as well as reinforced hydrate ability. The as-prepared CuAlg/Cu₃(PO₄)₂ modified membrane exhibits a superior oil-repulsive property and achieves a nearly zero flux decline for separating surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a high permeate flux up to ∼1330 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1. Notably, it is capable of keeping similar permeate flux for both pure water and oil-in-water emulsions during filtration, which is superior to the currently reported membranes, indicating its super-antifouling properties.

Advanced bioelectrochemical system for nitrogen removal in wastewater

Nitrogen (N) pollution in water has become a serious issue that cannot be ignored due to the harm posed by excessive nitrogen to environmental safety and human health; as such, N concentrations in water are strictly limited. The bioelectrochemical system (BES) is a new method to remove excessive N from water, and has attracted considerable attention. Compared with other methods, it is highly efficient and has low energy consumption. However, the BES has not been applied for N removal in practice due to lack of in-depth research on the mechanism and construction of high-performance electrodes, separators, and reactor configurations; this highlights a need to review and examine the efforts in this field. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the current BES research for N removal focusing on the reaction principles, reactor configurations, electrodes and separators, and treatment of actual wastewater; the corresponding performances in these realms are also discussed. Finally, the prospects for N removal in water using the BES are presented.

Bio-inspired adhesion control with liquids

Bio-inspired surfaces enabling wet adhesion management are of significant interest for applications in the field of biomedicine, as components of bionic robots and as wearable devices. In the course of biological evolution, many organisms have evolved wet adhesive surfaces with strong attachment ability. Insects enhance their adhesion on contact substrates using secreted adhesive liquids. Here we discuss concepts of bio-inspired wet adhesion. First, remaining challenges associated with the understanding and the design of biological and artificial wet adhesive systems as well as strategies to supply adhesive liquids to their contact surfaces are reviewed. Then, future directions to construct wet adhesive surfaces with liquids are discussed in detail. Finally, a model of wet adhesion management with liquids is suggested, which might help the design of next-generation bio-inspired wet adhesive surfaces.

Superhydrophobic-Substrate-Assisted Construction of Free-Standing Microcavity-Patterned Conducting Polymer Films

Patterned conducting polymer films with unique structures have promising prospects for application in various fields, such as actuation, water purification, sensing, and bioelectronics. However, their practical application is hindered because of the limitations of existing construction methods. Herein, a strategy is proposed for the superhydrophobic-substrate-assisted construction of free-standing 3D microcavity-patterned conducting polymer films (McPCPFs) at micrometer resolution. Easy-peeling and nondestructive transfer properties are achieved through electrochemical polymerization along the solid/liquid/gas triphase interface on micropillar-structured substrates. The effects of the wettability and geometrical parameters of the substrates on the construction of McPCPFs are systematically investigated in addition to the evolution of the epitaxial growth along the triphase interface at different polymerization times. The McPCPFs can be easily peeled from superhydrophobic surfaces using ethanol because of weak adhesion and nondestructively transferred to various substrates taking advantage of the capillarity. Furthermore, sensitive light-driven McPCPF locomotion on organic liquid surfaces is demonstrated. Ultimately, a facile strategy for the construction of free-standing 3D microstructure-patterned conducting polymer films is proposed, which can improve productivity and applicability of the films in different fields and expand the application scope of superwettable interfaces.

Universal Surface Coating with a Non-Phenolic Molecule, Sulfonated Pyrene

Nature-inspired small molecules such as catecholamines and polyphenols have gained a great deal of attention because of the exceptional surface-coating property that is applicable to many diverse substrates. Many researchers have conducted studies to expand molecular pools with surface-coating properties, but previous reports have still been limited to phenolic molecules as surface-coating agents. In this study, we describe for the first time the material-independent coating properties of nonphenolic molecules, namely, sulfonated pyrenes with Zr^IV ions. Owing to the binding capability with several oxygen-containing ligands, Zr^IV can be used for the molecular assembly of sulfonated pyrenes. We also report on the mixing of multiple sulfonated pyrenes and Zr^IV results in cross-linked complexes that can coat diverse solid substrates. The resulting coating can serve as a platform for grafting functional polysaccharides.

Durable Underwater Superoleophobic Coatings via Dispersed Micro Particle-Induced Hierarchical Structures Inspired by Pomfret Skin

Underwater superoleophobic materials due to its excellent antioil and self-cleaning performance have attracted tremendous attention. Current underwater superoleophobic surfaces usually use complex methods to construct the surface structure limiting the yield and not suitable for large-scale production. Here, inspired by the superoleophobicity of pomfret skin, we developed a strategy to fabricate superoleophobic coatings with hierarchical micro/nano structures by doping hydrophilic micro silica particle in calcium alginate hydrogel. The introduction of micro particles significantly reduces the adhesion of oil and improves the mechanical properties of the coatings. The prepared coatings also survived in high temperature and high salinity environment and the dried for free-standing films. The free-standing dry coating films can be used like wallpaper to decorate the targeted surface and endow them with underwater superoleophobicity. We expect that this work will provide a new method for designing underwater superoleophobic coatings and the wallpaper-like coating films allow large-scale production and will also promote the commercialization of oil-repellent materials.

ω-Thiolation of Phenolic Surfactants Enables Controlled Conversion between Extended, Bolaform, and Multilayer Conformations

The self-assembly of ω-thiolated surfactants onto gold is a well-studied phenomenon; however, control over the final organization within the thin films is either limited or requires extensive pre- and post-deposition chemical modifications. On the other hand, Langmuir-Blodgett deposition from the air-water interfaces affords a high degree of control over lateral organization within the film, yet it is generally employed to create physisorbed, soft matter films. Despite this, relatively little is known about the impact of the ω-thiolation on either the air-water of deposited film organization. Here, we show that the introduction of a terminal hydrophilic thiol on a phenolic surfactant does not necessarily disrupt a highly organized film nor does it necessarily induce a bolaform conformation at the interface. We show that the relative proportions of different conformations can be controlled using pH, relaxation time, surface pressure, and combinations thereof. Moreover, at high pH, the system undergoes a monolayer-to-multilayer transition wherein well-defined multilayer structures and morphologies are generated. These multilayers appear to comprise a single bolaform conformation atop an extended-chain condensed phase. We demonstrate that these structures can be transferred using Langmuir-Blodgett deposition demonstrating that combining these two approaches has the potential to achieve greater control over the functional properties of robust, chemisorbed films.

Micro-/Nanostructured Interface for Liquid Manipulation and Its Applications

Understanding the relationship between liquid manipulation and micro-/nanostructured interfaces has gained much attention due to the wide potential applications in many fields, such as chemical and biomedical assays, environmental protection, industry, and even daily life. Much work has been done to construct various materials with interfacial liquid manipulation abilities, leading to a range of interesting applications. Herein, different fabrication methods from the top-down approach to the bottom-up approach and subsequent surface modifications of micro-/nanostructured interfaces are first introduced. Then, interactions between the surface and liquid, including liquid wetting, liquid transportation, and a number of corresponding models, together with the definition of hydrophilic/hydrophobic, oleophilic/olephobic, the definition and mechanism of superwetting, including superhydrophobicity, superhydrophilicity, and superoleophobicity, are presented. The micro-/nanostructured interface, with major applications in self-cleaning, antifogging, anti-icing, anticorrosion, drag-reduction, oil-water separation, water collection, droplet (micro)array, and surface-directed liquid transport, is summarized, and the mechanisms underlying each application are discussed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives in this area are included.
