Controlled Manipulation of Magic Number Gold-Fullerene Clusters Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Development of a Structural Comparison Method to Promote Exploration of the Potential Energy Surface in the Global Optimization of Nanoclusters

A structural comparison method (SCM) was created to quantify the structural diversity of nanoclusters and was implemented into a global optimization algorithm to evaluate structural diversity between generated clusters on the fly and promote exploration of the potential energy surface. The SCM evaluated topological differences between clusters using the common neighbor analysis and provided a numerical measure of similarity between the two clusters. The SCM was implemented into a genetic algorithm by integrating it into a new structure + energy fitness operator such that structural diversity of clusters in the population and their energies were used to assign fitness values to clusters. The efficiency of the genetic algorithm with this new fitness operator was benchmarked against several Lennard-Jones clusters (LJ₃₈, LJ₇₅, and LJ₉₈) known to be difficult cases for global optimization algorithms. For LJ₃₈ and LJ₇₅, this new structure + energy fitness operator performed equally well or better than the energy fitness operator. However, the efficiency of locating the global minimum of LJ₉₈ decreased using this new structure + energy fitness operator. Further analysis of the genetic algorithm with this fitness operator showed that the algorithm did indeed promote exploration of the PES of LJ₉₈ as desired but hindered refinement of clusters, preventing it from locating the global minimum even if the energy funnel of the global minimum had been located.

The nanometre limits of ballistic and diffusive hot-hole mediated nonlocal molecular manipulation

We report an experimental investigation into the surface-specific and experimental limits of the range of STM induced nonlocal molecular manipulation. We measure the spot-size of the nonlocal manipulation of bromobenzene molecules on the Si(111)-7 × 7 surface at room temperature at two voltages and for a wide range of charge-injection times (number of hot charge-carriers) from 1 s up to 500 s. The results conform to an initially ballistic, 6-10 nm, and then hot-hole diffusive, 10-30 nm, transport away from the localised injection site. This work gives further confirmation that nonlocal molecular manipulation by STM directly reveals the ultrafast transport properties of hot-charge carriers at surfaces.

Charged Clusters of C60 and Au or Cu: Evidence for Stable Sizes and Specific Dissociation Channels

We have doped helium nanodroplets with C60 and either gold or copper. Positively or negatively charged (C60) mM n± ions (M = Au or Cu) containing up to ≈10 fullerenes and ≈20 metal atoms are formed by electron ionization. The abundance distributions extracted from high-resolution mass spectra reveal several local anomalies. The sizes of the four most stable (C60) mAu n± ions identified in previous calculations for small values of m and n ( m ≤ 2 and n ≤ 2, or m = 1 and n = 3) agree with local maxima in the abundance distributions. Our data suggest the existence of several other relatively stable ions including (C60)2Au3± and (C60)3Au4-. Another feature, namely the absence of bare (C60)2±, confirms the prediction that (C60)2M± dissociates by loss of C60± rather than loss of M. The experimental data also reveal the preference for loss of (charged or neutral) C60 over loss of a metal atom from some larger species such as (C60)3M3+. In contrast to these similarities between Au and Cu, the abundance distributions of (C60)3Au n- and (C60)3Cu n- are markedly different. In this discussion, we emphasize the similarities and differences between anions and cations, and between gold and copper. Also noteworthy is the observation of dianions (C60) mAu n2- for m = 2, 4, and 6.
