Confinement Effect on Molecular Conformation of Alkanes in Water-Filled Cavitands: A Combined Quantum/Classical Density Functional Theory Study

Multiscale computational simulation of pollutant behavior at water interfaces

The investigation of pollutant behavior at water interfaces is critical to understand pollution in aquatic systems. Computational methods allow us to overcome the limitations of experimental analysis, delivering valuable insights into the chemical mechanisms and structural characteristics of pollutant behavior at interfaces across a range of scales, from microscopic to mesoscopic. Quantum mechanics, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, and dissipative particle dynamics simulations represent diverse molecular interaction calculation methods that can effectively model pollutant behavior at environmental interfaces from atomic to mesoscopic scales. These methods provide a rich variety of information on pollutant interactions with water surfaces. This review synthesizes the advancements in applying typical computational methods to the formation, adsorption, binding, and catalytic conversion of pollutants at water interfaces. By drawing on recent advancements, we critically examine the current challenges and offer our perspective on future directions. This review seeks to advance our understanding of computational techniques for elucidating pollutant behavior at water interfaces, a critical aspect of water research.

Evolution of the Free Energy Landscapes of n-Alkane Guests Bound within Supramolecular Complexes

Confinement within nanoscale spaces can dramatically alter the ensemble of conformations flexible species explore. For example, chaperone complexes take advantage of confinement to fold misfolded proteins, while viral capsids transport genomic materials in tight packings. Here we examine the free energy landscapes of n-alkanes confined within supramolecular dimeric complexes of deep-cavity cavitand octa-acid, which have been experimentally demonstrated to force these chains with increasing length to adopt extended, helical, hairpin, and spinning top conformational motifs, using molecular simulations. Alkanes up to n-docosane in both vacuum and water predominantly exhibit a free energy minimum for elongated conformations with a majority of trans dihedrals. Within harmonically sealed cavitand dimers, however, the free energy landscapes as a function of the end-to-end distance between their terminal methyl units exhibit minima that evolve with the length of the alkane. Distinct free energy basins are observed between the helical and hairpin motifs and between the hairpin and chicane motifs whose relative stability changes with the number of carbons in the bound guest. These changes are reminiscent of two state-like protein folding, although the observed alkane conformations confined are more insensitive to temperature perturbation than proteins are. While the chicane motif within the harmonically sealed dimers has not been observed experimentally, this conformation relaxes to the observed spinning top motif once the harmonic restraints are released for the complexes in aqueous solution, indicating that these motifs are related to one another. We do not observe distinct minima between the confined extended and helical motifs, suggesting these conformers are part of a larger linear motif family whose population of gauche dihedral angles grows in proportion to the number of carbons in the chain to ultimately form a helix that fits the alkane within the complex.

Confinement Effect of Graphene Interface on Phase Transition of n-Eicosane: Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in thermal management and energy storage systems. Investigations on the thermophysical properties enhancement of organic PCMs by introducing carbon-based frameworks have received much attention in recent years. Studies of the phase transition in nanoconfinement are still in controversy with divergent opinions among researchers. In this article, the phase transition behavior of n-eicosane in slit-shaped pores between sheets of graphene is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. It is found that the graphene interface makes the phase transition temperature of n-eicosane increase, under the initial slit widths of 1.5-5.3 nm. Impacted by interaction and size effects, the distribution and orientation of n-eicosane molecules are quite different from those of the bulk state. In the confinement of graphene, the molecules turn to a reversible layered distribution parallel to the graphene sheets after solidification. The contact layers are found in all the confined systems, which is harder to melt and easier to solidify compared with the main part of the systems. The melting points of different systems are obtained by analysis of the liquid ratio. Finally, the relationship between the dimensionless phase transition point and slit width is discussed.

Enhancing Gas Solubility in Nanopores: A Combined Study Using Classical Density Functional Theory and Machine Learning

Geometrical confinement has a large impact on gas solubilities in nanoscale pores. This phenomenon is closely associated with heterogeneous catalysis, shale gas extraction, phase separation, etc. Whereas several experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted that provide meaningful insights into the over-solubility and under-solubility of different gases in confined solvents, the microscopic mechanism for regulating the gas solubility remains unclear. Here, we report a hybrid theoretical study for unraveling the regulation mechanism by combining classical density functional theory (CDFT) with machine learning (ML). Specifically, CDFT is employed to predict the solubility of argon in various solvents confined in nanopores of different types and pore widths, and these case studies then supply a valid training set to ML for further investigation. Finally, the dominant parameters that affect the gas solubility are identified, and a criterion is obtained to determine whether a confined gas-solvent system is enhance-beneficial or reduce-beneficial. Our findings provide theoretical guidance for predicting and regulating gas solubilities in nanopores. In addition, the hybrid method proposed in this work sets up a feasible platform for investigating complex interfacial systems with multiple controlling parameters.

Wetting Transition of Ionic Substrate by Modulating Surface Charge Distribution

Surface wettability regulation plays a crucial role in antifouling and related applications. For regulating surface wettability, one of the effective approaches is to modulate the surface charge distribution. Herein, we report a theoretical study for unraveling the mechanistic relation between surface charge distribution and ionic substrate wettability. Specifically, acetonitrile liquids at ambient condition in contact with various ionic substrates are considered. At different surface charge distributions, the interfacial thermodynamic properties are investigated by means of molecular density functional theory. We find that the variation of the spatial interval among the discrete charges strongly alters the substrate-acetonitrile interaction and leads to an oscillation in the interfacial tension, indicating that the substrate can be tuned from a solvophobic one to a solvophilic one. This trend can be further enhanced by increasing the charge quantity. The underlying mechanisms are extensively discussed and expatiated. Our work provides theoretical guidance to engineer and regulate surface wettability.

Bubble Point Pressures of Hydrocarbon Mixtures in Multiscale Volumes from Density Functional Theory

Accurate characterization of the bubble point pressure of hydrocarbon mixtures under nanoconfinement is crucial to the prediction of ultimate oil recovery and well productivity of shale/tight oil reservoirs. Unlike conventional reservoirs, shale has an extensive network of tiny pores in the range of a few nanometers. In nanopores, the properties of hydrocarbon fluids deviate from those in bulk because of significant surface adsorption. Many previous theoretical works use a conventional equation of state model coupled with capillary pressure to study the nanoconfinement effect. Without including the inhomogeneous molecular density distributions in nanoconfinement, these previous approaches predict only slightly reduced bubble points. In this work, we use density functional theory to study the effect of nanoconfinement on the hydrocarbon mixture bubble point pressure by explicitly considering fluid-surface interactions and inhomogeneous density distributions in nanopores. We find that as system pressure decreases, while lighter components are continuously released from the nanopores, heavier components accumulate within. The bubble point pressure of nanoconfined hydrocarbon mixtures is thus significantly suppressed from the bulk bubble point to below the bulk dew point, in line with our previous experiments. When bulk fluids are in a two-phase, the confined hydrocarbon fluids are in a single liquid-like phase. As pore size increases, bubble point pressure of confined fluids increases and hydrocarbon average density in nanopores approaches the liquid-phase density in bulk when bulk is in a two-phase region. For a finite volume bulk bath, we find that because of the competitive adsorption in nanopores, the bulk bubble point pressure increases in line with a previous experimental work. Our work demonstrates how mixture dynamics and nanopore-bulk partitioning influence phase behavior in nanoconfinement and enables the accurate estimation of hydrocarbon mixture bubble point pressure in shale nanopores.
