Physically Exfoliating 2D Materials: A Versatile Combination of Different Materials into a Layered Structure

Improving the properties of the existing two-dimensional (2D) materials is a major concern for many researchers today. Synergistic coupling of single-phase 2D material species with secondary functional materials has resulted in 2D nanohybrids with significantly enhanced properties beyond the sum of their individual components. In particular, nanohybrids created by alternatingly integrating different material species in the confined 2D nanometer regime have the potential to meet the needs of a wide variety of applications, particularly the many important energy-related applications that are of interest. However, scaling up production of 2D nanohybrids is still challenging, which is a major barrier to their practical application. Delamination and exfoliation by physical means separate the weakly bound 2D nanosheets into kinetically stable single- or few-layers. Herein, we provide a concise overview of recent achievements in the physical exfoliation-based fabrication of 2D nanohybrids featuring controlled heterolayered structures. Several strategies to efficiently produce heterolayered 2D nanohybrids in large quantities are described, such as (i) coexfoliation of different 2D species, (ii) aqueous-phase synthesis, and (iii) gas-phase synthesis. The versatility of the 2D nanohybrids was also illustrated by remarkable research examples, especially in energy-related applications.

Graphene Incorporated Electrospun Nanofiber for Electrochemical Sensing and Biomedical Applications: A Critical Review

The extraordinary material graphene arrived in the fields of engineering and science to instigate a material revolution in 2004. Graphene has promptly risen as the super star due to its outstanding properties. Graphene is an allotrope of carbon and is made up of sp²-bonded carbon atoms placed in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Graphite consists of stacked layers of graphene. Due to the distinctive structural features as well as excellent physico-chemical and electrical conductivity, graphene allows remarkable improvement in the performance of electrospun nanofibers (NFs), which results in the enhancement of promising applications in NF-based sensor and biomedical technologies. Electrospinning is an easy, economical, and versatile technology depending on electrostatic repulsion between the surface charges to generate fibers from the extensive list of polymeric and ceramic materials with diameters down to a few nanometers. NFs have emerged as important and attractive platform with outstanding properties for biosensing and biomedical applications, because of their excellent functional features, that include high porosity, high surface area to volume ratio, high catalytic and charge transfer, much better electrical conductivity, controllable nanofiber mat configuration, biocompatibility, and bioresorbability. The inclusion of graphene nanomaterials (GNMs) into NFs is highly desirable. Pre-processing techniques and post-processing techniques to incorporate GNMs into electrospun polymer NFs are precisely discussed. The accomplishment and the utilization of NFs containing GNMs in the electrochemical biosensing pathway for the detection of a broad range biological analytes are discussed. Graphene oxide (GO) has great importance and potential in the biomedical field and can imitate the composition of the extracellular matrix. The oxygen-rich GO is hydrophilic in nature and easily disperses in water, and assists in cell growth, drug delivery, and antimicrobial properties of electrospun nanofiber matrices. NFs containing GO for tissue engineering, drug and gene delivery, wound healing applications, and medical equipment are discussed. NFs containing GO have importance in biomedical applications, which include engineered cardiac patches, instrument coatings, and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for motion sensing applications. This review deals with graphene-based nanomaterials (GNMs) such as GO incorporated electrospun polymeric NFs for biosensing and biomedical applications, that can bridge the gap between the laboratory facility and industry.

Modification and Functionalization of Fibers Formed by Electrospinning: A Review

The development of new materials with specific functionalities for certain applications has been increasing with the advent of nanotechnology. A technique widely used for this purpose is electrospinning, because control of several parameters involved in the process can yield nanoscale fibers. In addition to the production of innovative and small-scale materials, through structural, chemical, physical, and biological modifications in the fibers produced in electrospinning, it is possible to obtain specific properties for a given application. Thus, the produced fibers can serve different purposes, such as in the areas of sensors, catalysis, and environmental and medical fields. Given this context, this article presents a review of the electrospinning technique, addressing the parameters that influence the properties of the fibers formed and some techniques used to modify them as specific treatments that can be conducted during or after electrospinning. In situ addition of nanoparticles, changes in the configuration of the metallic collector, use of alternating current, electret fibers, core/shell method, coating, electrospray-coating, plasma, reinforcing composite materials, and thermal treatments are some of the examples addressed in this work. Therefore, this work contributes to a better comprehension of some of the techniques mentioned in the literature so far.

Recent Progress on Molecular Photoacoustic Imaging with Carbon-Based Nanocomposites

For biomedical imaging, the interest in noninvasive imaging methods is ever increasing. Among many modalities, photoacoustic imaging (PAI), which is a combination of optical and ultrasound imaging techniques, has received attention because of its unique advantages such as high spatial resolution, deep penetration, and safety. Incorporation of exogenous imaging agents further amplifies the effective value of PAI, since they can deliver other specified functions in addition to imaging. For these agents, carbon-based materials can show a large specific surface area and interesting optoelectronic properties, which increase their effectiveness and have proved their potential in providing a theragnostic platform (diagnosis + therapy) that is essential for clinical use. In this review, we introduce the current state of the PAI modality, address recent progress on PAI imaging that takes advantage of carbon-based agents, and offer a future perspective on advanced PAI systems using carbon-based agents.

Recent Studies on Dispersion of Graphene-Polymer Composites

Graphene is an excellent 2D material that has extraordinary properties such as high surface area, electron mobility, conductivity, and high light transmission. Polymer composites are used in many applications in place of polymers. In recent years, the development of stable graphene dispersions with high graphene concentrations has attracted great attention due to their applications in energy, bio-fields, and so forth. Thus, this review essentially discusses the preparation of stable graphene-polymer composites/dispersions. Discussion on existing methods of preparing graphene is included with their merits and demerits. Among existing methods, mechanical exfoliation is widely used for the preparation of stable graphene dispersion, the theoretical background of this method is discussed briefly. Solvents, surfactants, and polymers that are used for dispersing graphene and the factors to be considered while preparing stable graphene dispersions are discussed in detail. Further, the direct applications of stable graphene dispersions are discussed briefly. Finally, a summary and prospects for the development of stable graphene dispersions are proposed.

Surfactant-in-Polymer Templating for Fabrication of Carbon Nanofibers with Controlled Interior Substructures: Designing Versatile Materials for Energy Applications

A simple, scalable, surfactant-in-polymer templating approach is demonstrated to create controlled long-range secondary substructures in a primary structure. A metal bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (MAOT) as the surfactant is shown to be capable of serving as a sacrificial template and metal precursor in carbon nanofibers. The low interfacial tension and controllable dimensions of the MAOT are maintained in the solid-phase polymer, even during electrospinning and heat-treatment processes, allowing for the long-range uniform formation of substructures in the nanofibers. The MAOT content is found to be a critical parameter for tailoring the diameter of the nanofibers and their textural properties, such as size and volume of interior pores. The metal counterion species in the MAOT determine the introduction of metallic phases in the nanofiber interior. The incorporation of MAOT with Na as the counterion into the polymer phase leads to the formation of a built-in pore structure in the nanofibers. In contrast, MAOT with Fe as a counterion generates unique iron-in-pore substructures in the nanofibers (FeCNFs). The FeCNFs exhibit outstanding charge storage and water splitting performances. As a result, the MAOT-in-polymer templating approach can be extended to combinations of various metal precursors and thus create desirable functionalities for different target applications.

Synthesis of a Three-Dimensional Interconnected Oxygen-, Boron-, Nitrogen-, and Phosphorus Tetratomic-Doped Porous Carbon Network as Electrode Material for the Construction of a Superior Flexible Supercapacitor

To construct a high-performance next-generation carbon-based flexible supercapacitor, high porosity, large mass density, and high flexibility are three significant challenging goals. However, one side always affects another. Herein, high-density tetratomic-doped porous composite carbon derived from sustainable biomaterials is achieved via two-step processes of carbonization and acid-washing treatment. The assembled carbon-based electrodes are highly doped with various heteroatoms (B, O, N, and P) for 33.59 atom %, resulting in abundant porosity, high densities, high pseudocapacitive contribution for 84.5%, and superior volumetric capacitive performance. The fabricated flexible electrode exhibits high flexibility, high mass loading (316 mg cm^-3), and remarkable tensile strength (44.6 MPa). Generally, the volumetric performance is key and a significant parameter to appraise the electrochemical characteristics of flexible supercapacitors within a limited space. The aqueous symmetric supercapacitor demonstrates a high volumetric energy density and an excellent power density of 2.08 mWh cm^-3 and 498.4 mW cm^-3, respectively, along with 99.6% capacitance retention after 20 000 cycles, making it competitive to even some pseudocapacitors.

Graphene impregnated electrospun nanofiber sensing materials: a comprehensive overview on bridging laboratory set-up to industry

Owing to the unique structural characteristics as well as outstanding physio-chemical and electrical properties, graphene enables significant enhancement with the performance of electrospun nanofibers, leading to the generation of promising applications in electrospun-mediated sensor technologies. Electrospinning is a simple, cost-effective, and versatile technique relying on electrostatic repulsion between the surface charges to continuously synthesize various scalable assemblies from a wide array of raw materials with diameters down to few nanometers. Recently, electrospun nanocomposites have emerged as promising substrates with a great potential for constructing nanoscale biosensors due to their exceptional functional characteristics such as complex pore structures, high surface area, high catalytic and electron transfer, controllable surface conformation and modification, superior electric conductivity and unique mat structure. This review comprehends graphene-based nanomaterials (GNMs) (graphene, graphene oxide (GO), reduced GO and graphene quantum dots) impregnated electrospun polymer composites for the electro-device developments, which bridges the laboratory set-up to the industry. Different techniques in the base polymers (pre-processing methods) and surface modification methods (post-processing methods) to impregnate GNMs within electrospun polymer nanofibers are critically discussed. The performance and the usage as the electrochemical biosensors for the detection of wide range analytes are further elaborated. This overview catches a great interest and inspires various new opportunities across a wide range of disciplines and designs of miniaturized point-of-care devices.
