Angle-Independent Structurally Colored PS@TiO2 Film with Excellent Underwater Superoleophobicity in Harsh Environments

Enhancing color saturation in photonic glasses through optimized absorption

Photonic glasses, isotropically assembled nanoparticles with short-range correlation, can produce angle independent structural colors. They show broader reflectance spectra and lower saturated colors, compared to photonic crystals. Low color saturation creates barriers for photonic glasses to be used for coatings, cosmetics, and colors. Broadband absorbing materials are commonly used to absorb incoherently scattered light to enhance the saturation. However, there is limited understanding on how the absorption quantitatively affects the colors of photonic glasses. To this end, we here use a validated Monte Carlo-based multiple scattering model to investigate how absorption impacts the reflectance spectra in photonic glasses. We show that the color saturation can be maximized with an optimal level of absorption regardless of sample thickness or refractive index contrast between particles and matrix. We quantitatively demonstrate that the multiple scattering is largely reduced with the optimal absorption level and the reflectance is dominantly contributed by the single scattering. The optimal absorption occurs when the sample absorption mean free path is comparable to the transport mean free path, which offers a guidance on how much absorbing material is needed for creating highly saturated photonic glasses. This work will not only pave ways for pushing applications of angle-independent structural colors, but also improve our understanding of light scattering and absorption in short-range correlated disordered systems.

New electric field responsive photonic crystals with remarkable yellow-to-green switch for adaptive camouflage

Electric field responsive photonic crystals take on critical significance in developing adaptive camouflage technology, which are promising materials for adaptive camouflage devices with better fabrication processes and color saturation. However, electric field responsive photonic crystals are primarily susceptible to poor fusion with typical background colors and necessitate the continuous implementation of electric fields to attain specific colors, thus limiting their practical applications. Monodisperse polyvinylpyrrolidone modified cadmium sulfide (PVP/CdS) microspheres with large refractive index are well prepared in this study. Liquid photonic crystals, exhibiting earth-yellow and light green under specific electric field, are obtained with PVP/CdS particles dispersed in propylene carbonate in accordance with the subtractive color mixing principle of structural color and initial color. The resulting electric field responsive photonic crystals are characterized by a simple preparation process, fast electrical response, long-time holding of the earth-yellow state, and reversible color changes between earth-yellow and light green in -3.5 V and + 3.5 V electric field switching. This study can contribute to the development of color-changing devices designed for adaptive camouflage applications.

Construction of Steady Amorphous Colloidal Array Patterns via Infiltration-Driven Assembly of Core-Shell Microparticles followed by Short-Time Heating

Although core-shell microparticles with a hard core and soft shell are often used to fabricate photonic crystal films, they are rarely applied to construct steady amorphous colloidal array (ACA) patterns. In this work, a series of monodisperse core-shell microparticles with a polystyrene (PS) core and poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) (P(MMA-BA)) shell have been successfully synthesized, and the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the shell layer have been well regulated. The synthesized core-shell microparticles were then used to fabricate ACA patterns via a convenient infiltration-driven assembly method. The results showed that the Tg of the shell significantly affected the microstructure of the amorphous colloidal arrays (ACAs). During the assembly process, the microparticles quickly contacted each other and the lower-Tg shells could merge with each other to form a continuous film. In this situation, the PS core was embedded and ranked in the P(MMA-BA) film, and both the refractive index contrast and order degree of the colloidal array became relatively low, resulting in a poor structural color. However, when the Tg of the shell layer was moderately high, a short-range ordered array was prepared via infiltration-driven assembly, thereby displaying a bright structural color. More importantly, the shell layers could merge with each other to some extent after short-time heating, resulting in fine mechanical stability. In brief, this study provides a facile and environmental approach to construct steady ACA patterns, which is promising in printing and painting industries.

Biomass-based superhydrophobic coating with tunable colors and excellent robustness

Multicolored superhydrophobic coating with high durability has been receiving tremendous attention in decorative applications. Herein, a facile method to fabricate multicolored superhydrophobic coating with excellent robustness has been developed by using cellulose and chitosan. The multicolored coatings can be obtained through single dyeing or mixed dyeing based on three primary dyes. The coating can be applied on hard substrates (e.g. glass, aluminum sheet) and soft substrates (e.g. cotton fabric) by diverse methods including spraying, dip-coating and painting. The colorful coating firmly adheres to the substrates due to the multiple interactions (siloxane covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds). The colorful coating exhibits water-repellant behaviors and can withstand sandpaper abrasion, tape-peeling cycles, water impact, salt spray test and UV environments. Furthermore, the multicolored coating can be used as a new type of pigment for painting on different substrates and is expected to have a huge potential application in technological design or decoration.

Graphene Oxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Enhanced Noniridescent Structural Colors Based on Silica Photonic Spray Paints with Improved Mechanical Robustness

In contrast to traditional pigment colors, structural colors have developed a great potential in practical applications, thanks to their unique nonfading and color tunable properties; especially amorphous photonic structures with noniridescent structural colors have attracted considerable attention and their applications have expanded to more fields. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) enhanced noniridescent structural colors with excellent mechanical robustness were established by a time-saving approach named spray coating, which allows for rapid fabrication of angular independent structural colors by spraying different photonic spray paints (PSPs) to ensure color multiplicity that was adjusted by the silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) sizes onto the substrates. The incorporation of poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) (PMB) improved the adhesion existing among SiO2 inter-nanoparticles and between SiO2 NPs and the substrates, taking advantages of the low glass transition temperature (Tg) of butyl acrylate derivative polymer and made PMB embedded PSPs coated patterns being imparted with good mechanical robustness and abrasive resistance. The peculiar light adsorption of GO and RGO across visible light spectrum facilitate higher color saturation. The improvement in color saturation of GO and RGO doped PSPs is expected to boost the promising applications in structurally colored paintings, inks and other color-related optical fields.

Functional Micro–Nano Structure with Variable Colour: Applications for Anti-Counterfeiting

Colour patterns based on micro-nano structure have attracted enormous research interests due to unique optical switches and smart surface applications in photonic crystal, superhydrophobic surface modification, controlled adhesion, inkjet printing, biological detection, supramolecular self-assembly, anti-counterfeiting, optical device and other fields. In traditional methods, many patterns of micro-nano structure are derived from changes of refractive index or lattice parameters. Generally, the refractive index and lattice parameters of photonic crystals are processed by common solvents, salts or reactive monomers under specific electric, magnetic and stress conditions. This review focuses on the recent developments in the fabrication of micro-nano structures for patterns including styles, materials, methods and characteristics. It summarized the advantages and disadvantages of inkjet printing, angle-independent photonic crystal, self-assembled photonic crystals by magnetic field force, gravity, electric field, inverse opal photonic crystal, electron beam etching, ion beam etching, laser holographic lithography, imprinting technology and surface wrinkle technology, etc. This review will provide a summary on designing micro-nano patterns and details on patterns composed of photonic crystals by surface wrinkles technology and plasmonic micro-nano technology. In addition, colour patterns as switches are fabricated with good stability and reproducibility in anti-counterfeiting application. Finally, there will be a conclusion and an outlook on future perspectives.
