Role of the Hydrophilic Latex Particle Surface in Water Diffusion into Films from Waterborne Polymer Colloids

The Effect of Silver Nanoparticles/Titanium Dioxide in Poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-Modified, Deproteinized, Natural Rubber Composites on Dye Removal

This work aims to enhance the dye-removal performance of prepared poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-modified, deproteinized, natural rubber ((PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR) through incorporation with silver nanoparticles/titanium dioxide. The (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR was prepared by emulsion-graft copolymerization with a grafting efficiency of 10.20 ± 2.33 to 54.26 ± 1.55%. The composites based on (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR comprising silver nanoparticles and titanium dioxide ((PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR/Ag-TiO2) were then prepared by latex compounding using the fixed concentration of AgNO3 (0.5 phr) and varying concentrations of TiO2 at 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 phr. The formation of silver nanoparticles was obtained by heat and applied pressure. The composites had a porous morphology as they allowed water to diffuse in their structure, allowing the high specific area to interact with dye molecules. The incorporation of silver nanoparticles/titanium dioxide improved the compressive modulus from 1.015 ± 0.062 to 2.283 ± 0.043 KPa. The (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR/Ag-TiO2 composite with 5.0 phr of TiO2 had a maximum adsorption capacity of 206.42 mg/g, which increased by 2.02-fold compared to (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR. The behavior of dye removal was assessed with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. These composites can maintain their removal efficiency above 90% for up to five cycles. Thus, these composites could have the potential for dye-removal applications.

Nanoparticle-Based Tough Polymers with Crack-Propagation Resistance

Although thin elastomer films of polymer nanoparticles are regarded as environmentally friendly materials, the low mechanical strength of the films limits their use in various applications. In the present study, we investigated the fracture resistance of latex films composed of acrylic nanoparticles where a small quantity of a rotaxane crosslinker was introduced. In contrast to conventional nanoparticle-based elastomers, the latex films composed of the rotaxane-crosslinked nanoparticles exhibited unusual crack propagation behavior; the direction of crack propagation changed from a direction parallel to the crack to one perpendicular to the crack, resulting in an increase in tear resistance. These findings will help to broaden the scope of design of new types of tough polymers composed of environmentally friendly polymer nanoparticles.

Preparation of Poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-Grafted Deproteinized Natural Rubber and Its Effect on the Properties of Natural Rubber/Silica Composites

This work aims to enhance the polarity of natural rubber by grafting copolymers onto deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) to improve its compatibility with silica. Poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-grafted DPNR ((PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR) was successfully prepared by graft copolymerization with acrylic acid and acrylamide in the latex stage, as confirmed by FTIR. The optimum conditions to obtain the highest conversion, grafting efficiency, and grafting percentage were a reaction time of 360 min, a reaction temperature of 50 °C, and an initiator concentration of 1.0 phr. The monomer conversion, grafting efficiency, and grafting percentage were 91.9-94.1, 20.8-38.9, and 2.1-9.9%, respectively, depending on the monomer content. It was shown that the polarity of the natural rubber increased after grafting. The (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR was then mixed with silica to prepare DPNR/silica composites. The presence of the (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR and silica in the composites was found to improve the mechanical properties of the DPNR. The incorporation of 10 phr of silica into the (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR with 10 phr monomer increased its tensile strength by 1.55 times when compared to 10 phr of silica loaded into the DPNR. The silica-filled (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR provided s higher storage modulus, higher Tg, and a lower tan δ peak, indicating stronger modified DPNR/silica interactions and greater thermal stability when compared to silica-filled DPNR.

Tracking Hydroplasticization by DSC: Movement of Water Domains Bound to Poly(Meth)Acrylates during Latex Film Formation

The film formation step of latexes constitutes one of the challenges of these environmentally friendly waterborne polymers, as the high glass transition (TG) polymers needed to produce hard films to be used as coatings will not produce coherent films at low temperature. This issue has been dealt by the use of temporary plasticizers added with the objective to reduce the TG of the polymers during film formation, while being released to the atmosphere afterwards. The main problem of these temporary plasticizers is their volatile organic nature, which is not recommended for the environment. Therefore, different strategies have been proposed to overcome their massive use. One of them is the use of hydroplasticization, as water, abundant in latexes, can effectively act as plasticizer for certain types of polymers. In this work, the effect of three different grafted hydroplasticizers has been checked in a (meth)acrylate copolymer, concluding that itaconic acid showed the best performance as seen by its low minimum film-formation temperature, just slightly modified water resistance and better mechanical properties of the films containing itaconic acid. Furthermore, film formation monitoring has been carried out by Differential Scanning Calorimety (DSC), showing that itaconic acid is able to retain more strongly the water molecules during the water losing process, improving its hydroplasticization capacity.

Quantification for the Mixing of Polymers on Microspheres in Waterborne Latex Films

Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to the structural analysis and understanding of the toughness of latex films, in which soft elastomer microspheres are interpenetrated, a method to quantitatively analyze the mixing of polymer chains at the microsphere surface, i.e., delocalization of hydrophilic charged group on the polymer chains by aging, has not yet been established. In this study, small-angle X-ray scattering was applied to characterize latex films by assuming a pseudo-two-phase system, which consists of an average-electron density microsphere core and a high-electron density interphase between the microsphere interfaces due to localized charged groups. The thus obtained parameter, i.e., the characteristic interfacial thickness (t_inter), quantitatively reflects the degree of mixing of polymer chains on the microsphere surface. We found that t_inter is strongly correlated to the fracture energy of the latex films. The proposed analysis method for the microscopic mixing of polymers on the microsphere surface in the film can thus be expected to shed light on design guidelines for industrial latex films and on the understanding of the mechanical properties of such films.
