Photo-Curable Lacquer Sap Resin Based on Urushiol-Mimicking, Tyrosine-Containing Additive

Oriental lacquer sap is attracting considerable attention as a renewable and eco-friendly natural resin with high durability, heat resistance, insulation, insect repellency, and antiseptic and antibacterial properties. However, to ensure excellent coating performance, it is necessary to improve the drying/curing process of lacquer sap with a time-consuming drying time at high humidity [relative humidity (RH), 70-90%] and ambient temperature (20-30 °C). Drawing on an understanding of the polymerization mechanism of urushiol, the main component of the lacquer sap consisted of a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion, and this study presents an eco-friendly additive that mimics the structure-function of urushiol composed of a polar catechol head group and a nonpolar hydrocarbon tail. A photo-curable lacquer sap was thus developed by adding a tyrosine amino acid-based lipid agent (denoted as Y-ADDA), which allows faster and more effective drying/curing at lower humidity while maintaining the nature-derived properties of lacquer sap. Y-ADDA easily coassembles with urushiol in the W/O emulsion droplets, thereby significantly accelerating the formation of a polymer network along with urushiol during water evaporation leading to fast drying/curing under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation at low humidity (∼50% RH). The UV-cured lacquer sap resins showed higher performance in terms of film processing and physicochemical properties compared with that of the lacquer containing only tyrosine amino acids without aliphatic tail conjugation, N-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl)-O-tert-butyl-l-tyrosine Fmoc-Tyr(tBu)-OH. Furthermore, the drying and curing times, film morphology, transmittance, hardness, and adhesion strength of the UV-cured lacquer were markedly superior compared to those of shellac, a general eco-friendly fast-drying primer. The study provides useful strategies and insights to promote the industrial application of lacquer sap resins by employing biocompatible nanoagents developed with an understanding of the curing mechanism of natural resins and from the viewpoint of green and sustainable chemistry perspective.

Synergistic interaction of renewable nipagin and eugenol for aromatic copoly(ether ester) materials with desired performance

Naturally occurring nipagin and eugenol were used as the collaborative starting materials for poly(ether ester) polymers. In this study, two series of nipagin and eugenol-derived copoly(ether ester)s, PHN1_1−xE1_x and PHN1_1−xE2_x (x = 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%), were prepared with renewable 1,6-hexanediol as a comonomer. The nipagin-derived component acts as the renewable surrogate of petroleum-based dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), while the eugenol-derived component acts as the cooperative property modifier of parent homopoly(ether ester) PHN1. 1,6-Hexanediol was chosen as the spacer because of its renewability, high boiling point, and short chain to enhance the glass transition temperatures (T_gs) of materials. The molecular weights and chemical structures were confirmed by gel permeation chromatograph (GPC), NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Thermal and crystalline properties were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD). The tensile assays were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties. The results suggested that properties of this kind of poly(ether ester)s could be finely tuned by the relative content of two components for the desired applications (elastomer, rubbery) suitable for different scenarios from polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Synthesis of an urushiol derivative and its use for hydrolysis resistance in dentin adhesive

Hydrolysis resistance is essential to the durability of the dentin bonding interface. Urushiol is a natural monomer that has been used in different fields over thousands of years but has the disadvantage of a long drying time. In this study, we evaluated a novel photocurable derivative of urushiol as the main monomer for polymerization in dentin adhesive and its effect on hydrolysis resistance. The derivative was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Compared with the Adper Single Bond 2, the experimentally synthesized adhesives had higher contact angles. In particular, the water sorption/solubility of the experimental samples were significantly lower than that of Adper Single Bond 2. The microtensile bond strengths of the test groups were higher than that of the control group, even after 5000 thermocycles. Cytotoxicity test results showed that adhesives based on the original derivative induced low toxicity to L929 cells. The results of this study may shift the focus of future research to natural monomers and even their derivatives which may perform well in dentistry.

Bio-based Aromatic Copolyesters: Influence of Chemical Microstructures on Thermal and Crystalline Properties

Aromatic copolyesters, derived from bio-based nipagin and eugenol, were synthesized with renewable 1,6-hexandiol as the spacer. Number-average, weight-average molecular weights (M_n, M_w), and polydispersity (D) values were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Chemical structures were confirmed by ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopies. Chemical microstructure analysis suggested that the nipagin and eugenol-derived units were inserted into polymer chains in an arbitrary manner. Due to the short chain of 1,6-hexanediol, the splitting of magnetically different methylene carbons, adjacent to the alcohol-oxygens, proved to be more sensitive towards sequence distributions, at the dyed level, than those from 1,10-decanediol. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that these polyester materials have excellent thermal stability (>360 °C), regardless of the content of eugenol-derived composition incorporated. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) experiments revealed the semicrystalline nature for this kind of copolyesters. The crystallinities gradually decreased with the increase of eugenol-derived composition. Thermal and crystalline properties were well discussed from the microscopic perspective. The point of this work lies in establishing guidance for future design and modification of high-performance polymer materials from the microscopic perspective.

Precision synthesis of 3-substituted urushiol analogues and the realization of their urushiol-like performance

Urushiol is a resource-limited natural coating material with diverse applications; however, the synthesis of urushiol analogues and the realization of their urushiol-like performance remain challenging. Herein, four urushiol analogues, namely, 3-((4-alkenoylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl)catechols with the precise 3-substitution pattern on a catechol as that found in urushiol were synthesized by employing the Mannich reaction of catechol with formaldehyde and N-Boc-piperazine as the key step in a two-step route. By using optimization, the advantages of convenience in operation, cost-effectiveness, and scalability could be obtained. The electropolymerization of these analogues on copper was found to be practical due to their higher aerobic stability than urushiol, affording robust coatings with desirable hardness, adhesion strength, hydrophobicity, and thermal stability. Furthermore, the coatings exhibited effective corrosion protection on copper with initial anticorrosion efficiency up to 99.9% and comparatively higher efficiency (more than 97%) after 4 weeks of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The evidence from the electrochemical and infrared spectroscopic characterization data revealed that the electropolymerization process mechanically involved the free radical coupling of phenoxyl radicals to themselves and to the C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds in the side chain, forming a robust crosslinking coating. This work paves a way for the synthesis of high-performance urushiol analogues with potential applications as metal protection materials.

Regioselective Mannich reaction was performed on catechol, yielding 3-substituted urushiol analogues that could be electropolymerized to achieve the desirable urushiol-like performance.
