Zwitterionic Surfactant Micelle-Directed Self-Assembly of Eu-Containing Polyoxometalate into Organized Nanobelts with Improved Emission and pH Responsiveness

Single-Walled Cluster Nanotubes for Single-Atom Catalysts with Precise Structures

Spatially confining isolated atomic sites in low-dimensional nanostructures is a promising strategy for preparing high-performance single-atom catalysts (SACs). Herein, fascinating polyoxometalate cluster-based single-walled nanotubes (POM-SWNTs) with atomically precise structures, uniform diameter, and single-cluster wall thickness are constructed by lacunary POM clusters (PW11 and P2W17 clusters). Isolated metal centers are accurately incorporated into the PW11-SWNTs and P2W17-SWNTs supports. The structures of the resulting MPW11-SWNTs and MP2W17-SWNTs are well established (M = Cu, Pt). Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate the stability of POM-SWNTs. Furthermore, the turnover frequency of PtP2W17-SWNTs is 20 times higher than that of PtP2W17 cluster units and 140 times higher than that of Pt nanoparticles in the alcoholysis of dimethylphenylsilane. Theoretical studies indicate that incorporating a Pt atom into the P2W17 support induces straightforward electron transfer between them, combining the nanoconfined environment to enhance the catalytic activity of PtP2W17-SWNTs. This work shows the feasibility of using subnanometric POM clusters to assemble single-walled cluster nanotubes, highlighting their potential to prepare superior SACs with precise structures.

Temporal Control of Fluorescent EuW10 Aggregates for Autonomous DNA Capture and Information Encryption

Self-assembly exploits noncovalent interaction to offer an effective method for the fabrication of materials. For Na9 [EuW10 O36 ] ⋅ 32H2 O (EuW10 ), the negative charges and abundant oxygen atoms on its surface provide a handle for static self-assembly. New properties are envisioned for EuW10 aggregates which are able to display such kinetics and time-programming characteristics, in order to satisfy more complex and intelligent application scenarios, such as DNA binding and information encryption. In this work, EuW10 coupling with stimuli-responsive dodecyl dimethylamine oxide (C12 DMAO) can generate versatile aggregates with pH-responsive properties. We demonstrated the temporal programming of the assembly and disassembly of EuW10 nanospheres using a pH clock reaction of acid/urease hydrolysis. The pH clock reaction endows EuW10 assemblies with dynamical properties, in which the charges and fluorescence changes are coded in this system. These fluorescent assemblies provide new application in time-programmed DNA capture and information encryption.

Functional Nano-Objects by Electrostatic Self-Assembly: Structure, Switching, and Photocatalysis

The design of functional nano-objects by electrostatic self-assembly in solution signifies an emerging field with great potential. More specifically, the targeted combination of electrostatic interaction with other effects and interactions, such as the positioning of charges on stiff building blocks, the use of additional amphiphilic, π−π stacking building blocks, or polyelectrolytes with certain architectures, have recently promulgated electrostatic self-assembly to a principle for versatile defined structure formation. A large variety of architectures from spheres over rods and hollow spheres to networks in the size range of a few tenths to a few hundred nanometers can be formed. This review discusses the state-of-the-art of different approaches of nano-object formation by electrostatic self-assembly against the backdrop of corresponding solid materials and assemblies formed by other non-covalent interactions. In this regard, particularly promising is the facile formation of triggerable structures, i.e. size and shape switching through light, as well as the use of electrostatically assembled nano-objects for improved photocatalysis and the possible solar energy conversion in the future. Lately, this new field is eliciting an increasing amount of understanding; insights and limitations thereof are addressed in this article. Special emphasis is placed on the interconnection of molecular building block structures and the resulting nanoscale architecture via the key of thermodynamics.

Ionic Self-Assembled Luminescent Nanospheres from Cationic Polyelectrolyte and Eu-Containing Polyoxometalate

Using the ionic self-assembly (ISA) strategy to combine Eu-containing polyoxometalates (Eu-POMs) and organic molecules mainly through noncovalent electrostatic interactions can protect Eu-POMs from solvent quenching of luminescence and enhance their processability. For this reason, a cationic polyelectrolyte, branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), and a Eu-POM, Na₉(EuW₁₀O₃₆)·32H₂O (EuW₁₀), were used here to construct luminescence-enhanced spherical aggregates with diameters ranging from 50 to 200 nm. At a fixed concentration of EuW₁₀, the phase behavior and luminescence properties of the mixture could be modulated by the PEI concentration. Such ISA-induced aggregates could effectively shield water molecules and result in better photophysical properties. Compared to bare EuW₁₀, the absolute quantum yield and lifetime of luminescence for aggregates increased 10 and 5 times, respectively. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of the EuW₁₀ coordination structure to the environment made it possible for obtained aggregates being used to detect either copper cations or permanganate anions due to their strong specific quenching effects to luminescence. Such a new type of luminescent soft material not only provided a reference for exploring the luminescence enhancement mechanism of lanthanide through self-assembly in aqueous solution but also exhibited potential in detection by luminescence analysis.
