Squeezed-Out Technique To Prepare High-Quality PbBr-Based Layered Perovskite Langmuir-Blodgett Films Applicable to Cavity Polariton Devices

Two-Dimensional Layered Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Thin-Film Fabrication by Langmuir-Blodgett and Intercalation Techniques

We demonstrate the formation of a well-organized thin film of two-dimensional (2D) layered (C₁₈H₃₇NH₃)₂PbI₄ hybrid perovskite by immersing octadecyl amine (ODA) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films in an aqueous solution of PbI₂/HI. The immersed films exhibit a sharp absorption band at 486 nm (2.55 eV), which is assigned to the excitonic absorption. The film exhibits a bright green emission under ultraviolet light at room temperature. The photoluminescence spectrum has a distinct peak at 497 nm (2.49 eV) and is a mirror image of the absorption spectrum. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses reveal that the film has a bilayer-like structure with a d-spacing of 6.4 nm, which is equal to that of a (C₁₈H₃₇NH₃)₂PbI₄ perovskite single crystal with a quantum well (QW) structure. Only intense peaks of the (0 0 l) (l = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24) reflections are observed in the out-of-plane XRD pattern, indicating that the c axis is vertically oriented with respect to the substrate surface, and the orientational order is remarkably high. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the ODA molecules are protonated in the PbI₂/HI solution. These results suggest that the nitrogen atoms of the ODA molecules in the film are protonated in the PbI₂/HI solution, and then, inorganic layers of the PbI₆ octahedra are intercalated in the alkyl ammonium film to neutralize the positive charge and form a QW structure. Fluorescence microscopy observation reveals that the 2D layered (C₁₈H₃₇NH₃)₂PbI₄ film has a relatively uniform surface, reflecting the well-organized layered structure of the base material (ODA LB film). Because the intercalation process can be applied to various metal cations and halogen anions, we believe that the proposed technique will aid in the development of highly efficient 2D layered organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Langmuir-Schaefer Films of Amphiphilic Stilbene Enhanced via Interfacial Reaction with Cyclodextrins

Two enantiomeric amphiphiles containing the stilbene moiety (l-StG and d-StG) were assembled into ordered Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) films through the air/water interface and their circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was investigated. When the molecules were spread at the air/water interface, a monolayer with nanofiber structures was formed, which could be subsequently transferred onto solid substrates by the LS method. The LS films showed both circular dichroism (CD) and CPL, whose handedness was determined by the molecular chirality of the amphiphiles. When the amphiphilic molecules were spread on the aqueous subphases containing cyclodextrins (including α-CyD, β-CyD, or γ-CyD), similar nanofiber-featured films were formed. However, the CD and CPL showed different changes. When l-StG was spread on the cyclodextrins, both CD and CPL were enhanced. When d-StG was reacted with cyclodextrins, the CD signal decreased while the CPL was enhanced. It was suggested that the chirality cooperation and conflict between the point chirality from the amphiphilic stilbene and the cavity chirality of cyclodextrin led to the phenomenon. However, in any case, the immobilization of the stilbene by the cyclodextrins caused the enhancement of CPL.

Don't Forget Langmuir-Blodgett Films 2020: Interfacial Nanoarchitectonics with Molecules, Materials, and Living Objects

Designing interfacial structures with nanoscale (or molecular) components is one of the important tasks in the nanoarchitectonics concept. In particular, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method can become a promising and powerful strategy in interfacial nanoarchitectonics. From this viewpoint, the status of LB films in 2020 will be discussed in this feature article. After one section on the basics of interfacial nanoarchitectonics with the LB technique, various recent research examples of LB films are introduced according to classifications of (i) growing research, (ii) emerging research, and (iii) future research. In recent LB research, various materials other than traditional lipids and typical amphiphiles can be used as film components of the LB techniques. Two-dimensional materials, supramolecular structures such as metal organic frameworks, and biomaterials such as DNA origami pieces are capable of working as functional components in the LB assemblies. Possible working areas of the LB methods would cover emerging demands, including energy, environmental, and biomedical applications with a wide range of functional materials. In addition, forefront research such as molecular manipulation and cell fate control is conducted in LB-related interfacial science. The LB technique is a traditional and well-develop methodology for molecular films with a ca. 100 year history. However, there is plenty of room at the interfaces, as shown in LB research examples described in this feature article. It is hoped that the continuous development of the science and technology of the LB method make this technique an unforgettable methodology.
