Mechanisms underlying the nucleation processes of mesoporous ceria nanoparticles

Mesoporous ceria nanoparticles featuring ordered pores (O-MCNs) have much greater potential than their counterparts featuring interparticle pores (I-MCNs) due to their uniform pore size and interconnected framework structures. However, current methods can only synthesize I-MCNs and fail to achieve O-MCNs. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the formation of pores in I-MCNs can spark ideas for designing new methods to realize the synthesis of O-MCNs. In this study, the details of an established I-MCN synthetic method using 1-octadecene (ODE) and ethanol as a mixed solvent, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O as a precursor and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as a ligand were explored. The results revealed that six groups of molecules were generated ahead of ceria crystal nucleation, and these molecules played different roles in the formation of I-MCNs. Four steps, namely, ceria crystal nucleation, small ceria nanoparticle formation, small ceria nanoparticle assembly, and I-MCN growth, were involved in the formation of the I-MCNs. The assembly of small ceria nanoparticles driven by the fusion of the (200) plane leaving behind unoccupied spaces was the major reason for the formation of pores in the I-MCNs. These findings provided very useful information for the future design of new methods to achieve O-MCNs.

Tailorable Formation of Hierarchical Structure Silica (HMS) and Its Application in Hydrogen Production

Relentless endeavors have been committed to seeking simple structure-directing agents for synthesizing hierarchical mesoporous silica (HMS) materials but remaining challenges. In this contribution, we offered an improved one-pot hydrothermal route to prepare HMS materials using a single non-ionic triblock copolymer (F127) structure-directing agent under a mild polycarboxylic (citric acid) mediated condition. Via studies of key synthetic parameters including acid concentration, crystallization temperature and aging time, it was found that citric acid medium presents an important bridging effect under the optimal concentration from 0.018 M (pH = 2.57) to 1.82 M (pH = 1.09), contributing to the self-assemblage of partially protonated non-ionic triblock copolymer and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into a high-quality multistage structure of silica materials. The specific surface area (SSA) of HMS shows a volcanic trend and is closely associated with the concentration of citric acid while the highest SSA of 739.9 m2/g can be achieved at the citric concentration of 0.28 M. Moreover, the as-synthesized HMS-CTA supported Ni/CeO2 catalysts indicate an excellent production of hydrogen through dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction over 172 h stability. The improved, facile synthesis strategy under polycarboxylic medium displays an expanded perspective for synthesizing other mesoporous materials in a wide range of applications such as catalytic material carriers and drug inhibitors.

Synthesis of Noble Metal M@YSiO2 Yolk-Shell Nanoparticles with Thin Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Outer Shells via an Aqueous Medium Phase

A simple method is proposed for the synthesis of noble metal M@YSiO₂ (M = Au, Pd, Ag) yolk-shell nanoparticles. The effects of synthesis conditions on the preparation of yolk-shell nanoparticles were discussed in detail. According to the different corrosion resistances between inorganic silica and organosilicone in a selective etching solution, yolk-shell nanoparticles with large cavity and thin shell were prepared using the same aqueous medium in a step-by-step synthesis process. Different from traditional methods, this method is facile and efficient because the main synthesis process is carried out in an aqueous phase. This extended method may benefit the synthesis and application of other nanomaterials with a similar yolk-shell structure.

Recent Trends in Morphology-Controlled Synthesis and Application of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

The outstanding journey towards the investigation of mesoporous materials commences with the discovery of high surface area porous silica materials, named MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter-41) according to the inventors' name Mobile scientists in the United States. Based on a self-assembled supramolecular templating mechanism, the synthesis of mesoporous silica has extended to wide varieties of silica categories along with versatile applications of all these types in many fields. These silica families have some extraordinary structural features, like highly tunable nanoscale sized pore diameter, good Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas, good flexibility to accommodate different organic and inorganic functional groups, metals etc., onto their surface. As a consequence, thousands of scientists and researchers throughout the world have reported numerous silica materials in the form of published articles, communication, reviews, etc. Beside this, attention is also given to the morphology-oriented synthesis of silica nanoparticles and their significant effects on the emerging fields of study like catalysis, energy applications, sensing, environmental, and biomedical research. This review highlights a consolidated overview of those morphology-based mesoporous silica particles, emphasizing their syntheses and potential role in many promising fields of research.
