Magnetic Hierarchically Macroporous Emulsion-Templated Poly(acrylic acid)-Iron Oxide Nanocomposite Beads for Water Remediation

Highly Porous Polymer Beads Coated with Nanometer-Thick Metal Oxide Films for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Bisphenol A

Highly porous metal oxide-polymer nanocomposites are attracting considerable interest due to their unique structural and functional features. A porous polymer matrix brings properties such as high porosity and permeability, while the metal oxide phase adds functionality. For the metal oxide phase to perform its function, it must be fully accessible, and this is possible only at the pore surface, but functioning surfaces require controlled engineering, which remains a challenge. Here, highly porous nanocomposite beads based on thin metal oxide nanocoatings and polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs) are demonstrated. By leveraging the unique properties of polyHIPEs, i.e., a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network of macropores, and high-precision of the atomic-layer-deposition technique (ALD), we were able to homogeneously coat the entire surface of the pores in polyHIPE beads with TiO2-, ZnO-, and Al2O3-based nanocoatings. Parameters such as nanocoating thickness, growth per cycle (GPC), and metal oxide (MO) composition were systematically controlled by varying the number of deposition cycles and dosing time under specific process conditions. The combination of polyHIPE structure and ALD technique proved advantageous, as MO-nanocoatings with thicknesses between 11 ± 3 and 40 ± 9 nm for TiO2 or 31 ± 6 and 74 ± 28 nm for ZnO and Al2O3, respectively, were successfully fabricated. It has been shown that the number of ALD cycles affects both the thickness and crystallinity of the MO nanocoatings. Finally, the potential of ALD-derived TiO2-polyHIPE beads in photocatalytic oxidation of an aqueous bisphenol A (BPA) solution was demonstrated. The beads exhibited about five times higher activity than nanocomposite beads prepared by the conventional (Pickering) method. Such ALD-derived polyHIPE nanocomposites could find wide application in nanotechnology, sensor development, or catalysis.

MoS2-Cu/CuO@graphene Heterogeneous Photocatalysis for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of MB from Water

The industrial revolution resulted in the contamination of natural water resources. Therefore, it is necessary to save and recover the natural water resources. In this regard, polymer-based composites have attracted the scientific community for their application in wastewater treatment. Herein, molybdenum disulfide composites with a mix phase of copper, copper oxide and graphene (MoS₂-Cu/CuO@GN) were synthesized through the hydrothermal method. Methylene blue (MB) was degraded by around 93.8% within the 30 min in the presence of MoS₂-Cu/CuO@GN under visible light. The degradation efficiency was further enhanced to 98.5% with the addition of H₂O₂ as a catalyst. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of pure MoS₂, MoS₂-Cu/CuO and MoS₂-Cu/CuO@GN were also investigated under the same experimental conditions. The structural analysis endorses the presence of the Cu/CuO dual phase in MoS₂. The charge recombination ratio and band gap of MoS₂-Cu/CuO@GN were also investigated in comparison to pure MoS₂ and MoS₂-Cu/CuO. The chemical states, the analysis of C1s, O1s, Mo3d and Cu2p3, were also analyzed to explore the possible interaction among the present elements. The surface morphology confirms the existence of Cu/CuO and GN to MoS₂.

Magnetic responsive mesoporous alginate/β-cyclodextrin polymer beads enhance selectivity and adsorption of heavy metal ions

Mesoporous (~7-8 nm) biopolymer hydrogel beads (HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD) were synthesised via ionic polymerisation route to separate heavy metal ions. The adsorption capacity of HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD was higher than that of raw halloysite nano tubes (HNTs), iron nanoparticles (FeNPs), and bare alginate beads. FeNPs induce the magnetic properties of adsorbent and metal-based functional groups in and around the hydrogel beads. The mesoporous surface of the adsorbent permits access of heavy metal ions onto the polymer beads to interact with internal active sites and the mesoporous polymer network. Maximum adsorption capacities of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) were 21.09 mg/g, 15.54 mg/g, 2.47 mg/g, and 2.68 mg/g, respectively. HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD was able to adsorb heavy metals efficiently (75-99%) under environment-relevant concentrations (200 μg/L) from mixed metal contaminants. The adsorption and selectivity trends of heavy metals were Pb > Cu > Cd > Ni, despite electrostatic binding strength of Cd > Cu > Pb > Ni and covalent binding strength of Pb > Ni > Cu > Cd. It demonstrated that not only chemosorption but also physisorption acts as the sorption mechanism. The reduction in surface area, porosity, and pore volume of the expended adsorbent, along with sorption study results, confirmed that pore filling and intra-particle diffusion played a considerable role in removing heavy metals.

Development and Mechanistic Studies of Ternary Nanocomposites for Hydrogen Production from Water Splitting to Yield Sustainable/Green Energy and Environmental Remediation

Photocatalysts lead vitally to water purifications and decarbonise environment each by wastewater treatment and hydrogen (H2) production as a renewable energy source from water-photolysis. This work deals with the photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and H2 production by novel silver-nanoparticle (AgNPs) based ternary-nanocomposites of thiolated reduce-graphene oxide graphitic carbon nitride (AgNPs-S-rGO2%@g-C3N4) material. Herein, the optimised balanced ratio of thiolated reduce-graphene oxide in prepared ternary-nanocomposites played matchlessly to enhance activity by increasing the charge carriers’ movements via slowing down charge-recombination ratios. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO), >2 wt.% or <2 wt.%, rendered H2 production by light-shielding effect. As a result, CIP degradation was enhanced to 95.90% by AgNPs-S-rGO2%@g-C3N4 under the optimised pH(6) and catalyst dosage(25 mg/L) irradiating beneath visible-light (450 nm, 150 watts) for 70 min. The chemical and morphological analysis of AgNPs-S-rGO2%@g-C3N4 surface also supported the possible role of thiolation for this enhancement, assisted by surface plasmon resonance of AgNPs having size < 10 nm. Therefore, AgNPs-S-rGO2%@g-C3N4 has 3772.5 μmolg−1 h−1 H2 production, which is 6.43-fold higher than g-C3N4 having cyclic stability of 96% even after four consecutive cycles. The proposed mechanism for AgNPs-S-rGO2%@g-C3N4 revealed that the photo-excited electrons in the conduction-band of g-C3N4 react with the adhered water moieties to generate H2.

Improved Magneto-Microfluidic Separation of Nanoparticles through Formation of the β-Cyclodextrin-Curcumin Inclusion Complex

Molecular adsorption to the nanoparticle surface may switch the colloidal interactions from repulsive to attractive and promote nanoparticle agglomeration. If the nanoparticles are magnetic, then their agglomerates exhibit a much stronger response to external magnetic fields than individual nanoparticles. Coupling between adsorption, agglomeration, and magnetism allows a synergy between the high specific area of nanoparticles (∼100 m²/g) and their easy guidance or separation by magnetic fields. This yet poorly explored concept is believed to overcome severe restrictions for several biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles related to their poor magnetic remote control. In this paper, we test this concept using curcumin (CUR) binding (adsorption) to β-cyclodextrin (βCD)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP). CUR adsorption is governed by host-guest hydrophobic interactions with βCD through the formation of 1:1 and, possibly, 2:1 βCD:CUR inclusion complexes on the IONP surface. A 2:1 stoichiometry is supposed to promote IONP primary agglomeration, facilitating the formation of the secondary needle-like agglomerates under external magnetic fields and their magneto-microfluidic separation. The efficiency of these field-induced processes increases with CUR concentration and βCD surface density, while their relatively short timescale (<5 min) is compatible with magnetic drug delivery application.

Fundamentals and Design-Led Synthesis of Emulsion-Templated Porous Materials for Environmental Applications

Emulsion templating is at the forefront of producing a wide array of porous materials that offers interconnected porous structure, easy permeability, homogeneous flow-through, high diffusion rates, convective mass transfer, and direct accessibility to interact with atoms/ions/molecules throughout the exterior and interior of the bulk. These interesting features together with easily available ingredients, facile preparation methods, flexible pore-size tuning protocols, controlled surface modification strategies, good physicochemical and dimensional stability, lightweight, convenient processing and subsequent recovery, superior pollutants remediation/monitoring performance, and decent recyclability underscore the benchmark potential of the emulsion-templated porous materials in large-scale practical environmental applications. To this end, many research breakthroughs in emulsion templating technique witnessed by the recent achievements have been widely unfolded and currently being extensively explored to address many of the environmental challenges. Taking into account the burgeoning progress of the emulsion-templated porous materials in the environmental field, this review article provides a conceptual overview of emulsions and emulsion templating technique, sums up the general procedures to design and fabricate many state-of-the-art emulsion-templated porous materials, and presents a critical overview of their marked momentum in adsorption, separation, disinfection, catalysis/degradation, capture, and sensing of the inorganic, organic and biological contaminants in water and air.

Adsorption of Organic Dyes on Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles. Part II: Field-Induced Nanoparticle Agglomeration and Magnetic Separation

This paper (part II) is devoted to the effect of molecular adsorption on the surface of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) on the enhancement of their (secondary) field-induced agglomeration and magnetic separation. Experimentally, we use Methylene Blue (MB) cationic dye adsorption on citrate-coated maghemite nanoparticles to provoke primary agglomeration of IONP in the absence of the field. The secondary agglomeration is manifested through the appearance of needlelike micron-sized agglomerates in the presence of an applied magnetic field. With the increasing amount of adsorbed MB molecules, the size of the field-induced agglomerates increases and the magnetic separation on a magnetized micropillar becomes more efficient. These effects are mainly governed by the ratio of magnetic-to-thermal energy α, suspension supersaturation Δ₀, and Brownian diffusivity D_eff of primary agglomerates. The three parameters (α, Δ₀, and D_eff) are implicitly related to the surface coverage θ of IONP by MB molecules through the hydrodynamic size of primary agglomerates exponentially increasing with θ. Experiments and developed theoretical models allow quantitative evaluation of the θ effect on the efficiency of the secondary agglomeration and magnetic separation.

Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine-Tethered Multiple Emulsion-Templated Hierarchically Macroporous Poly(acrylic acid)-Al2O3 Nanocomposite Beads for Water Purification

Emulsion template-guided strategy has been used to produce porous architectures with exquisite structure, tailored morphology, and exclusive features for ubiquitous applications. Notwithstanding, the practical water remediation is often marred by their transport-limited behavior and fragility. To circumvent these conundrums, we prepared hierarchically porous poly(acrylic acid)-alumina nanocomposite beads by solidifying the droplets of emulsions jointly stabilized by the organic surfactants and alumina nanoparticles. By virtue of their positive charge, the alumina nanoparticles got entrapped within the poly(acrylic acid) scaffolds that excluded the risk of secondary contamination typically observed with conventional nanocomposites. Being amenable to surface modification, the carboxyl moieties of the beaded polymer were further exploited to covalently tether branched polyethylenimine throughout the exterior and interior surface of the porous matrix via a grafting-to approach. The macropores expedite an active fluid flow and easier adsorbate transport throughout the functionalized nanocomposites whose overall higher density of positive charge over a certain pH range electrostatically attracts and effectively adsorbs the negatively charged Cr(VI) complexes and anionic congo red ions/molecules from water. This proof-of-concept synthetic approach and postsynthetic modification offer an improved mechanical robustness to these macrosized multifunctional nanocomposite beads for their easier processing, thereby paving the way for the point-of-use water purification technology development.

Recent advances in separation applications of polymerized high internal phase emulsions

Polymerized high internal phase emulsions as highly porous adsorption materials have received increasing attention and wide applications in separation science in recent years due to their remarkable merits such as highly interconnected porosity, high permeability, good thermal and chemical stability, and tailorable chemistry. In this review, we attempt to introduce some strategies to utilize polymerized high internal phase emulsions for separation science, and highlight the recent advances made in the applications of polymerized high internal phase emulsions for diverse separation of small organic molecules, carbon dioxide, metal ions, proteins, and other interesting targets. Potential challenges and future perspectives for polymerized high internal phase emulsion research in the field of separation science are also speculated at the end of this review.

Synthesis of Poly(methacrylic acid)/Montmorillonite Hydrogel Nanocomposite for Efficient Adsorption of Amoxicillin and Diclofenac from Aqueous Environment: Kinetic, Isotherm, Reusability, and Thermodynamic Investigations

Herein, a simplistic redox polymerization strategy was utilized for the fabrication of a poly(methacrylic acid)/montmorillonite hydrogel nanocomposite (PMA/nMMT) and probed as a sorbent for sequestration of two pharmaceutical contaminants, viz., amoxicillin (AMX) and diclofenac (DF), from wastewater. The synthesized hydrogel nanocomposite was characterized by the Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques to analyze structural characteristics and sorption interactions. The efficacy of PMA/nMMT was thoroughly investigated for the sequestration of AMX and DF from the aquatic phase with a variation in operative variables like agitation time, sorbent dosage, pH, and initial sorbate concentration. The reaction kinetics was essentially consistent with the pseudo-second-order model with rate dominated by the intraparticle diffusion model as well as the film diffusion mechanism. The Freundlich isotherm appropriated the equilibrium data over the entire range of concentration. Thermodynamic investigation explored the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the process. The most possible mechanism has been explained, which includes electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, cationic exchange, and partition mechanism. Economic feasibility, better sorption capacity (152.65 for AMX and 152.86 mg/g for DF), and efficient regeneration and reusability even after four consecutive sorption-desorption cycles ascertained PMA/nMMT as a potential sorbent for AMX and DF uptake from the aqueous phase.

Controllable Synthesis of Porous Cu-BTC@polymer Composite Beads for Iodine Capture

The efficient and safe capture of radioactive iodine (¹²⁹I or ¹³¹I) is of great significance in nuclear waste disposal. Here, we report millimeter-scale poly(ether sulfone) composite beads loaded with porous Cu-BTC [Cu₃(BTC)₂, BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate] (Cu-BTC@PES), prepared by a phase inversion method for the removal of volatile iodine. Three kinds of Cu-BTC@PES composite beads were obtained with different Cu-BTC contents of 48.6, 60.2, and 71.9%, respectively. While maintaining crystallinity, the composite beads exhibited higher I₂ vapor adsorption capacity (639 mg/g) in the form of iodine molecules. The iodine absorption up to 260 mg/g and the adsorption was followed Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the composite beads can still absorb more than 85% of iodine after 3 cycles of regeneration with excellent recyclability. The resulting Cu-BTC@PES composite beads show great potential for the sustainable removal of radioactive iodine.

Fabrication of Emulsion-Templated Poly(vinylsulfonic acid)-Ag Nanocomposite Beads with Hierarchical Multimodal Porosity for Water Cleanup

Emulsion templating has emerged as a cutting-edge technique to prepare a wide array of porous polymer-metal nanocomposites with intriguing properties. Using this strategy, we set out to prepare novel hierarchically porous poly(vinylsulfonic acid) beads, which were then used for the in situ production of silver nanoparticles to obtain poly(vinylsulfonic acid)-Ag nanocomposite beads via a facile approach. Owing to their multimodal macro-meso-/microporosity that accounts for their decent BET surface areas (170.75-197.74 m²/g) and easier mass diffusion and transport together with the synergistic benefits of very small silver nanoparticles (down to ∼3.77 nm), the nanocomposite beads are found effective to remove Hg(II) and RhB and to kill Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria. The adsorption capacities (167.98-190.58 mg/g) of these materials for Hg(II) surpass some recently reported benchmark materials. The larger size (1.56 ± 0.20-1.50 ± 0.14 mm) of the beads that helps favor the handling and subsequent recovery for recycling is also very useful to further broaden the horizons of these materials to develop decentralized water treatment systems.
