Molecular Behavior of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate in Hydrated Crystal, Tilted Gel, and Liquid Crystal Phases Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Molecular Dynamics Computational Study of Sustainable Green Surfactant for Application in Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery

Green surfactant (GS) flooding, an environmentally friendly chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (cEOR) method, is explored in this molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study. This study evaluates the ability of (S)-2-dodecanamido-aminobutanedioic as a GS for cEOR, assessing its performance with hexane (C6), dodecane (C12), and eicosane (C20) as representative oils. In the case of the bulk system, a comprehensive molecular-level investigation provides structural details such as the radial distribution function, solvent-accessible surface area, GS adsorption dynamics, diffusivity, and emulsion stability of the GS, oil, and water systems. Also the impact of the three distinct oils on interfacial tension was examined in the existence of GS molecules. The findings reveal rapid GS molecule aggregation and adsorption on oil droplets, with various impacts on emulsion stability depending on the oil type. Additionally, GS enhances the aggregation of heavy C20 oil molecules in a water medium. The study demonstrates GS's role as an effective emulsifier, facilitating oil droplet recovery, with electrostatic interactions governing micelle formation and van der Waals interactions influencing oil droplet emulsification. These results align with prior experimental data, affirming GS's promising application potential in cEOR while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Computational Study on the Microscopic Adsorption Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates with Different Chain Lengths on Anthracite Surface

In order to explore the influence of different lengths of hydrophobic carbon chains on the diffusion characteristics of surfactants on the surface of anthracite, six linear alkyl benzene sulfonates with different hydrophobic carbon chain lengths were selected (mC, m = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18; m represents the numbers of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic carbon chain), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted. Models of surfactant-anthracite, surfactant-graphite layer, and water-surfactant-anthracite were constructed. After analyzing a series of properties such as adsorption energy, diffusion coefficient, radial distribution function (RDF), and hydrophobic tail order parameters, it was found that 12C had the highest adsorption strength on the surface of anthracite; the reason was that 12C had the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further studies had found that the hydrophobic tail chain of 12C had the strongest isotropy. The study fills the gap in the systematic study of the diffusion characteristics of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) with different chain lengths on the surface of anthracite, enriches and develops the basic theory of coal wettability, and also provides technical ideas for the design of new surfactants and new dust suppression agents.

Microscopic Diffusion Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates on the Surface of Anthracite: The Influence of Different Attachment Sites of Benzene Ring in the Backbone

In order to explore the effect of the attachment site of the benzene ring in the backbone of the surfactant on its diffusion characteristics on the surface of anthracite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and the four isomers (m-C16, m = 2,4,6,8; m represents the attachment site of the benzene ring in the backbone) of sodium hexadecyl benzene sulfonate (SHS) were selected. Binary models of surfactant/anthracite, surfactant/graphene modified by oxygen-containing functional groups, and a ternary model of water/surfactant/anthracite were constructed. By analyzing a series of properties such as interaction energy, contact surface area, relative concentration distribution, radial distribution function, hydrophobic tail chain order parameter, etc., it is concluded that the adsorption strength of 4-C16 on the surface of anthracite is the highest; the reason is that 4-C16 has the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further investigations find that 4-C16 can be densely covered on the ketone group, and the longer branch chain of 4-C16 has the highest degree of order in the Z-axis direction.

Molecular Assembly of Surfactant Mixtures in Oil-Swollen Micelles: Implications for High Salinity Colloidal Stability

Alkylbenzene sulfonates are one of the most important synthetic surfactant families, considering their wide applicability, cost-effectiveness, and overall consumption levels. Nevertheless, their low salt tolerance (especially divalent ion contents) prevented their wider applications such as enhanced oil recovery in high salinity reservoirs. Here, using experiments and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrated that the high salinity colloidal stability of alkylbenzene sulfonates can be dramatically increased by mixing with zwitterionic cosurfactants in oil-swollen micelles. By mixing with cosurfactants we had two important observations. (1) The polydispersity of surfactant mixture oil-swollen micelles were largely decreased due to the less rigid oil/water interfaces with mixed surfactants, which formed fewer but larger uniform micelles. (2) Strong dehydration of sulfonates due to the shielding from protruding more extended zwitterionic cosurfactants at the oil/water interfaces. Both observed molecular assembly characteristics triggered by the cosurfactants effectively reduced the total exposures of sulfonates to water phase that may form divalent ion bridging and large aggregates, and thus increased their high salinity colloidal stability. Lastly, it was observed that the dehydration of sulfonates was the highest at flat oil/water interfaces (very large oil-swollen micelles), which justified that adding trace amount of mineral oils may boost the high salinity colloidal stability even further.
