Insight into Kinetics and Mechanisms of AOT Vesicle Adsorption on Silica in Unfavorable Conditions

Vesicles as a Multifunctional Microenvironment for Electrochemiluminescence Signal Amplification

Vesicles as a typical interface-rich microenvironment can promote the reaction rate and the intermediate stability, which are promising for introduction in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal amplification. In this work, a kind of multilamellar vesicle obtained from sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) was used to modify the electrode surface. The AOT vesicle-modified microenvironment could significantly enhance the ECL performances for the luminol/O2 system in a neutral medium. The mechanism study demonstrated that the nanoscale multilamellar vesicles could maintain the vesicle structure on the electrode surface, which substantially improved the electron transfer and reaction rate, luminescence efficiency of the excited-state 3-aminophthalate anion, and stability of the superoxide anion radical. Alternatively, such a multifunctional microenvironment was also able to enhance the ECL signals from the tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)32+)/tripropylamine (TPrA) system. Moreover, another dodecyl dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide inner salt (DSB)-based vesicle was constructed to further verify the versatility of the vesicle-modified microenvironment for ECL signal amplification. Our work not only provides a versatile microenvironment for improving the efficiency of various ECL systems but also offers new insights for the microenvironment construction using the ordered assemblies in ECL fields.

Formation of a Fully Anionic Supported Lipid Bilayer to Model Bacterial Inner Membrane for QCM-D Studies

Supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) on quartz crystals are employed as versatile model systems for studying cell membrane behavior with the use of the highly sensitive technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). Since the lipids constituting cell membranes vary from predominantly zwitterionic lipids in mammalian cells to predominantly anionic lipids in the inner membrane of Gram-positive bacteria, the ability to create SLBs of different lipid compositions is essential for representing different cell membranes. While methods to generate stable zwitterionic SLBs and zwitterionic-dominant mixed zwitterionic–anionic SLBs on quartz crystals have been well established, there are no reports of being able to form predominantly or fully anionic SLBs. We describe here a method for forming entirely anionic SLBs by treating the quartz crystal with cationic (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS). The formation of the anionic SLB was tracked using QCM-D by monitoring the adsorption of anionic lipid vesicles to a quartz surface and subsequent bilayer formation. Anionic egg L-α-phosphatidylglycerol (PG) vesicles adsorbed on the surface-treated quartz crystal, but did not undergo the vesicle-to-bilayer transition to create an SLB. However, when PG was mixed with 10–40 mole% 1-palmitoyl-2-hydroxy-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol) (LPG), the mixed vesicles led to the formation of stable SLBs. The dynamics of SLB formation monitored by QCM-D showed that while SLB formation by zwitterionic lipids followed a two-step process of vesicle adsorption followed by the breakdown of the adsorbed vesicles (which in turn is a result of multiple events) to create the SLB, the PG/LPG mixed vesicles ruptured immediately on contacting the quartz surface resulting in a one-step process of SLB formation. The QCM-D data also enabled the quantitative characterization of the SLB by allowing estimation of the lipid surface density as well as the thickness of the hydrophobic region of the SLB. These fully anionic SLBs are valuable model systems to conduct QCM-D studies of the interactions of extraneous substances such as antimicrobial peptides and nanoparticles with Gram-positive bacterial membranes.

Comprehensive review on surfactant adsorption on mineral surfaces in chemical enhanced oil recovery

With the increasing demand for efficient extraction of residual oil, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) offers prospects for producing more reservoirs' original oil in place. As one of the most promising methods, chemical EOR (cEOR) is the process of injecting chemicals (polymers, alkalis, and surfactants) into reservoirs. However, the main issue that influences the recovery efficiency in surfactant flooding of cEOR is surfactant losses through adsorption to the reservoir rocks. This review focuses on the key issue of surfactant adsorption in cEOR and addresses major concerns regarding surfactant adsorption processes. We first describe the adsorption behavior of surfactants with particular emphasis on adsorption mechanisms, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorption structures. Factors that affect surfactant adsorption such as surfactant characteristics, solution chemistry, rock mineralogy, and temperature were discussed systematically. To minimize surfactant adsorption, the chemical additives of alkalis, polymers, nanoparticles, co-solvents, and ionic liquids are highlighted as well as implementing with salinity gradient and low salinity water flooding strategies. Finally, current trends and future challenges related to the harsh conditions in surfactant based EOR are outlined. It is expected to provide solid knowledge to understand surfactant adsorption involved in cEOR and contribute to improved flooding strategies with reduced surfactant loss.

Electrophoretic mobility and stability of SiO2 nanoparticles in the solutions of AOT in n-hexadecane-chloroform mixtures

Electrophoretic mobility of SiO₂ nanoparticles in a n-hexadecane-chloroform mixture depending on AOT concentration and chloroform content was determined. It was shown that an increase in chloroform content and a decrease in AOT concentration cause a growth in electrophoretic mobility. The use of the values of Debye lengths (characteristic thickness) of the diffuse part of the electric double layer (EDL) that were determined previously allowed us to calculate the electrokinetic potential and to evaluate the stability of organosols. The obtained data were in good correlation with the dynamics of temporal changes of hydrodynamic radius and the intensity of light scattering. Organosols may be used for heteroaggregation (sorption) of Au and Ag nanoparticles on SiO₂ .
