Direct Synthesis of Polar Functionalized Polyethylene Thermoplastic Elastomer

Stretchable, Strong, Recyclable Helicide Elastomer Based on Dynamic Covalent Interactions

Current methods for making and disposing synthetic polymers have been widely pursued and are largely unsustainable. As a part of the solution, the reversible nature of dynamic covalent bonds emerges as an extraordinarily diverse and valuable feature in the development of exotic molecules and extended structures. With these bonds, it should be possible to construct recyclable and mechanically interlocked molecular structures using relatively simple precursors with preorganized geometries. A new helicide-based elastomer network is developed here with self-healing, recycling, and degradation features using a similar concept. The best self-healing performance (100%) was noted over 10-20 min, with various H2O, HCl, and NaOH solutions that delivered mechanical properties in the 1-1.4 MPa range. For hydrolytic degradation, the parameters are defined based on the type of binding, the pH of the solutions, and the copolymer network, which endowed a degradation time of approximately 4-11 h for each prepared sample. However, due to the reversible nature of the dynamic bonds, the material showed good recyclable mechanical properties compared to the pristine samples after five consecutive cycles, which meet the requirements of recyclable materials and recyclable packaging.

Amine-Imine Nickel Catalysts with Pendant O-Donor Groups for Ethylene (Co)Polymerization

The introduction of a secondary interaction is an efficient strategy to modulate transition-metal-catalyzed ethylene (co)polymerization. In this contribution, O-donor groups were suspended on amine-imine ligands to synthesize a series of nickel complexes. By adjusting the interaction between the nickel metal center and the O-donor group on the ligands, these nickel complexes exhibited high activities for ethylene polymerization (up to 3.48 × 10⁶ g_PE·mol_Ni^-1·h^-1) with high molecular weight up to 5.59 × 10⁵ g·mol^-1 and produced good polyethylene elastomers (strain recovery (SR) = 69-81%). In addition, these nickel complexes can catalyze the copolymerization of ethylene with vinyl acetic acid, 6-chloro-1-hexene, 10-undecylenic, 10-undecenoic acid, and 10-undecylenic alcohol to prepare the functionalized polyolefins.

Direct Synthesis of Polyethylene Thermoplastic Elastomers Using Hybrid Bulky Acenaphthene-Based α-Diimine Ni(II) Catalysts

Recently, polyolefin thermoplastic elastomers can be obtained directly using ethylene as a single feedstock via α-diimine nickel-catalyzed ethylene chain walking polymerization. Here, a new range of bulky acenaphthene-based α-diimine nickel complexes with hybrid o-phenyl and -diarylmethyl anilines were constructed and applied to ethylene polymerization. All the nickel complexes under the activation of excess Et₂AlCl exhibited good activity (level of 10⁶ g mol^-1 h^-1) and produced polyethylene with high molecular weight (75.6-352.4 kg/mol) as well as proper branching densities (55-77/1000C). All the branched polyethylenes obtained exhibited high strain (704-1097%) and moderate to high stress (7-25 MPa) at break values. Most interestingly, the polyethylene produced by the methoxy-substituted nickel complex exhibited significantly lower molecular weights and branching densities, as well as significantly poorer strain recovery values (48% vs. 78-80%) than those by the other two complexes under the same conditions.

Polar-Functionalized Polyethylenes Enabled by Palladium-Catalyzed Copolymerization of Ethylene and Butadiene/Bio-Based Alcohol-Derived Monomers

Polar-functionalized polyolefins are high-value materials with improved properties. However, their feedstocks generally come from non-renewable fossil products; thus, it requires the development of renewable bio-based monomers to produce functionalized polyolefins. In this contribution, via the Pd-catalyzed telomerization of 1,3-butadiene and three types of bio-based alcohols (furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, and solketal), 2,7-octadienyl ether monomers including OC8-FUR, OC8-THF, and OC8-SOL were synthesized and characterized, respectively. The copolymerization of these monomers with ethylene catalyzed by phosphine-sulfonate palladium catalysts was further investigated. Microstructures of the resultant copolymers were analyzed by NMR and ATR-IR spectroscopy, revealing linear structures with incorporations of difunctionalized side chains bearing both allyl ether units and polar cyclic groups. Mechanical property studies exhibited better strain-at-break of these copolymers compared to the non-polar polyethylene, among which the copolymer E-FUR with the incorporation of 0.3 mol% displayed the highest strain-at-break and stress-at-break values of 940% and 35.9 MPa, respectively.

The Dynamic Properties at Elevated Temperature of the Thermoplastic Polystyrene Matrix Modified with Nano-Alumina Powder and Thermoplastic Elastomer

The performance improvement of advanced electronic packaging material is an important topic to meet the stringent demands of modern semiconductor devices. This paper studies the incorporation of nano-alumina powder and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) into thermoplastic polystyrene matrix to tune the thermal and mechanical properties after injection molding process. In the sample preparation, acetone was employed as a solvent to avoid the powder escape into surrounding during the mechanical mixing in a twin-screw mixer. The pressure and shear force were able to mix the composite with good uniformity in compositions. The samples with different compositions were fabricated using injection molding. The measured results showed that adding 5 wt.% of TPE into the simple polystyrene was able to raise the melt flow index from 12.3 to 13.4 g/10 min while the thermal decomposition temperature remained nearly unchanged. Moreover, the addition of small amount of nano-alumina powder could quickly improve the mechanical property by raising its storage modulus. For example, the addition of 3 wt.% of nano-alumina powder had an increase of 7.3% in storage modulus. Over doping of nano-alumina powder in the composite, such as 10 wt.%, on the other hand, lowered the storage modulus from 2404 MPa to 2069 MPa. The experimental study demonstrated that the tuning in the polystyrene’s thermal and mechanical properties is feasible by composition modification with nano-alumina powder and TPE. The better concentration of the additives should be determined according to the specific applications.

Microplastics released from food containers can suppress lysosomal activity in mouse macrophages

The ingestion and accumulation of microplastics is a serious threat to the health and survival of humans and other organisms given the increasing use of daily-use plastic products, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, whether direct microplastic contamination from plastic packaging is a threat to human health remains unclear. We analyzed the market demand for plastic packaging in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe and identified the commonly used plastic food packaging products. We found that food containers exposed to high-temperature released more than 10 million microplastics per mL in water. Recycled plastic food packaging was demonstrated to continuously leach micro- and nanoplastics. In vitro cell engulfing experiments revealed that both micro- and nanoplastic leachates are readily taken up by murine macrophages without any preconditioning, and that short-term microplastic exposure may induce inflammation while exposure to nanoplastic substantially suppressed the lysosomal activities of macrophages. We demonstrated that the ingestion of micro- and nanoplastics released from food containers can exert differential negative effects on macrophage activities, proving that the explosive growth in the use of plastic packaging can poses significant health risks to consumers.

Exploring the Relationship between the Polyethylene Microstructure and Spatial Structure of α-Diimine Pd(II) Catalysts via a Hybrid Steric Strategy

The branching density of polyethylene generated in the α-diimine Pd(II) system is usually very high, largely independent of simple ligand modifications with steric or electronic perturbations, or the polymerization conditions. In this study, we designed and synthesized a class of bulky hybrid α-diimine Pd(II) catalysts combining ortho-diarylmethyl and ortho-phenyl moieties to explore the relationship between the polyethylene microstructure and the spatial structure of catalysts. In ethylene polymerization, the hybrid α-diimine Pd(II) catalysts exhibited high activities (well above 10⁵ g·mol^-1·h^-1) and yielded highly branched (90-110/1000C) polyethylenes with high molecular weights (up to 278.3 kg/mol). Compared with the two corresponding symmetrical ortho-diarylmethyl-based or ortho-phenyl-based Pd(II) catalysts, the hybrid catalysts generated polyethylene of significantly higher branching densities (92 vs 28-34/1000C) in marked higher activities. Similar phenomena are also observed in the copolymerization of ethylene with polar monomers. Moreover, the hybrid Pd(II) catalysts can more efficiently promote the copolymerization of ethylene with various polar monomers in comparison to the corresponding symmetrical catalysts. The more open spatial environment around the metal center by using a hybrid steric strategy was proposed to be responsible for above advantages.

Effect of para-Substituents in Ethylene Copolymerizations with 1-Decene, 1-Dodecene, and with 2-Methyl-1-Pentene Using Phenoxide Modified Half-Titanocenes-MAO Catalyst Systems

Effect of para-substituents in the ethylene (E) copolymerization with 1-decene (DC), 1-dodecene (DD), and with 2-methyl-1-pentene (2M1P) using a series of Cp*TiCl2 (O-2,6-i Pr2 -4-R-C6 H2 ) [R=H (1), t Bu (2), Ph (3), CHPh2 (4), CPh3 (5), SiMe3 (6), SiEt3 (7), and newly prepared 4-t BuC6 H4 (8) and 3,5-Me2 C6 H3 (9)]-MAO catalyst systems has been studied. The activities in these copolymerization reactions were affected by the para-substituent, and the SiMe3 (6), SiEt3 (7) and 3,5-Me2 C6 H3 (9) analogues showed the higher activities at 50 °C in the E copolymerization reactions with DC (1.06-1.44×106  kg-polymer/mol-Ti⋅h), DD (1.04-1.88×106  kg-polymer/mol-Ti⋅h) than the others, whereas no significant differences were observed in the comonomer incorporations. Complexes 6 and 7 also showed the higher activities at 50 °C in the E/2M1P copolymerization, and the 2M1P incorporation was affected by the para-substituent and the polymerization temperature; complex 9 showed better 2M1P incorporation at 25 °C.

Fluorinated α-Diimine Nickel Mediated Ethylene (Co)Polymerization

Fluorine substituents in transition metal catalysts are of great importance in olefin polymerization catalysis; however, the comprehensive effect of fluorine substituents is elusive in seminal late transition metal α-diimine catalytic system. In this contribution, fluorine substituents at various positions (ortho-, meta-, and para-F) and with different numbers (F_n ; n=0, 1, 2, 3, 5) were installed into the well-defined N-terphenyl amine and thus were studied for the first time in the nickel α-diimine promoted ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar monomers. The position of the fluorine substituent was particularly crucial in these polymerization reactions in terms of catalytic activity, polymer molecular weight, branching density, and incorporation of polar monomer, and thus a picture on the fluorine effect was given. As a notable result, the ortho-F substituted α-diimine nickel catalyst produced highly linear polyethylenes with an extremely high molecular weight (M_w =8703 kDa) and a significantly low degree of branching of 1.4/1000 C; however, the meta-F and/or para-F substituted α-diimine nickel catalysts generated highly branched (up to 80.2/1000 C) polyethylenes with significantly low molecular weights (M_w =20-50 kDa).

Influences of Ligand Backbone Substituents on Phosphinecarbonylpalladium and -nickel Catalysts for Ethylene Polymerization and Copolymerization with Polar Monomers

A series of phosphinecarbonylpalladium and -nickel catalysts bearing various substituents on the ligand backbone were prepared, characterized, and used in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar monomers. The Pd and Ni catalysts can achieve high activities as well as high polymer molecular weights in both ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar monomers. The electron-donating group from the carbonyl side can effectively increase the polymer molecular weights. Utilization of a cyclic backbone structure can increase the catalytic activities at the expense of the polymer molecular weights. Moreover, installation of a pyridyl moiety in the ligand backbone can enable Lewis acid responsiveness and can enhance the polymerization activities. These results suggest the importance of the ligand backbone for the properties of catalysts in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization reactions.

The II-I Phase Transition Behavior of Butene-1 Copolymers with Hydroxyl Groups

The crystallization and II–I phase transition of functionalized polybutene-1 with hydroxyl groups were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that the incorporated hydroxyl groups increase the nucleation density but decrease the growth rate in melt crystallization. Interestingly, for the generated tetragonal form II, the presence of polar hydroxyl groups can effectively accelerate the phase transition into the thermodynamically stable modification of trigonal form I, especially with stepwise annealing and high incorporation. Using stepwise annealing, II–I phase transition was enhanced by an additional nucleation step performed at a relatively low temperature, and the optimal nucleation temperature to obtain the maximum transition degree was ‒10 °C, which is independent from the content of hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, the accelerating effect of hydroxyl groups on the II–I transition kinetics can be increased by reducing the crystallization temperature when preparing form II crystallites. These results provide a potential molecular design approach for developing polybutene-1 materials.

Boosting the Thermal Stability of α-Diimine Palladium Complexes in Norbornene Polymerization from Construction of Intraligand Hydrogen Bonding and Simultaneous Increasing Axial/Equatorial Bulkiness

Increasing the thermostability of α-diimine late-transition-metal complexes and therefore rendering them more active at higher temperatures is of great importance, yet challenging for the olefin polymerization field. In the present research, a new family of α-diimine palladium complexes that can promote norbornene polymerization at high temperatures (up to 140 °C) is disclosed. Because of the conformational restriction caused by increasing the axial and equatorial bulkiness as well as the presence of intraligand H···F hydrogen bonds, N-aryl rotations can be efficiently restricted, therefore circumventing the deactivation of the active species at high temperatures. At 80-140 °C, these complexes can efficiently catalyze norbornene homopolymerizations, giving high catalytic activities up to 5.65 × 10⁷ g of PNB per mole Ni per hour and polymers with high molecular weights up to 37.2 × 10⁴ g/mol, which are highly superior to catalytic systems mediated by CF₃-free complexes. Moreover, these complexes could also afford medium catalytic activities in the presence of polar 5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (NB-COOCH₃).
