Mechanism of Soft Nanoparticle Diffusion in Entangled Polymer Melts

When does a macromolecule transition from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle?

Frequently, the defining characteristic of a nanoparticle is simply its size, where objects that are 1-100 nm are characterized as nanoparticles. However, synthetic and biological macromolecules, in particular high molecular weight chains, can satisfy this size requirement without providing the same phenomena as one would expect from a nanoparticle. At the same time, soft polymer nanoparticles are important in a broad range of fields, including understanding protein folding, drug delivery, vitrimers, catalysis and nanomedicine. Moreover, the recent flourish of all polymer nanocomposites has led to the synthesis of soft all-polymer nanoparticles, which emerge from internal crosslinking of a macromolecule. Thus, there exists a transition of an internally crosslinked macromolecule from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle as the amount of internal crosslinks increases, where the polymer chain exhibits different behavior than the nanoparticle. Yet, this transition is not well understood. In this work, we seek to address this knowledge gap and determine the transition of a macromolecule from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle as internal crosslinking increases. In this work, small angle neutron scattering (SANS) offers insight into the structure of polystyrene and poly(ethyl hexyl methacrylate) nanostructures in dilute solutions, with crosslinking densities that vary from 0.1 to 10.7%. Analyses of the SANS data provides structural characteristics to classify a nanostructure as chain-like or particle-like and identify a crosslinking dependent transition between the two morphologies. It was found that for both types of polymeric nanostructures, a crosslinking density of 0.81% (∼ a crosslink for every 1 in 125 monomers) or higher exhibit clear particle-like behavior. Lower crosslinking density nanostructures showed amounts of collapse similar to that of a star polymer (0.1% XL) or a random walk polymer chain (0.4% XL). Thus, the transition of an internally crosslinked macromolecule from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle is not an abrupt transition but occurs via the gradual contraction of the chain with incorporated crosslinks.

Relationship between Gel Mesh and Particle Size in Determining Nanoparticle Diffusion in Hydrogel Nanocomposites

The diffusion of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether thiol (PEGSH)-functionalized gold nanoparticles (NPs) was measured in polyacrylamide gels with various cross-linking densities. The molecular weight of the PEGSH ligand and particle core size were both varied to yield particles with hydrodynamic diameters ranging from 7 to 21 nm. The gel mesh size was varied from approximately 36 to 60 nm by controlling the cross-linking density of the gel. Because high-molecular-weight ligands are expected to yield more compressible particles, we expected the diffusion constants of the NPs to depend on their hard/soft ratios (where the hard component of the particle consists of the particle core and the soft component of the particle consists of the ligand shell). However, our measurements revealed that NP diffusion coefficients resulted primarily from changes in the overall hydrodynamic diameter and not the ratio of particle core size to ligand size. Across all particles and gels, we found that the diffusion coefficient was well predicted by the confinement ratio calculated from the diameter of the particle and an estimate of the gel mesh size obtained from the elastic blob model and was well described using a hopping model for nanoparticle diffusion. These results suggest that the elastic blob model provides a reasonable estimate of the mesh size that particles "see" as they diffuse through the gel. This work brings new insights into the factors that dictate how NPs move through polymer gels and will inform the development of hydrogel nanocomposites for applications such as drug delivery in heterogeneous, viscoelastic biological materials.

Interaction between Filler and Polymeric Matrix in Nanocomposites: Magnetic Approach and Applications

In recent years, polymer nanocomposites produced by combining nanofillers and a polymeric matrix are emerging as interesting materials. Polymeric composites have a wide range of applications due to the outstanding and enhanced properties that are obtained thanks to the introduction of nanoparticles. Therefore, understanding the filler-matrix relationship is an important factor in the continued growth of this scientific area and the development of new materials with desired properties and specific applications. Due to their performance in response to a magnetic field magnetic nanocomposites represent an important class of functional nanocomposites. Due to their properties, magnetic nanocomposites have found numerous applications in biomedical applications such as drug delivery, theranostics, etc. This article aims to provide an overview of the filler-polymeric matrix relationship, with a special focus on magnetic nanocomposites and their potential applications in the biomedical field.
