Effect of Molecular Asymmetry on the Formation of Asymmetric Nanostructures in ABC-Type Block Copolymers

Automated Search Strategy for Novel Ordered Structures of Block Copolymers

Block copolymers with different architectures can possibly generate innumerable stable or metastable structures and thus provide an irreplaceable platform for theoretically exploring novel structures. Self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is a powerful tool to predict the ordered structures of block copolymers; however, it is sensitively dependent on its initial condition. Here we propose to use multiple symmetry-adapted basis functions to generate the initial conditions of SCFT and then apply Bayesian optimization to search for ordered structures by navigating the coefficient space of these basis functions. Without any prior knowledge, our scheme can automatically recover hundreds of ordered structures for two simple block copolymers, including most of the common structures and complex Frank-Kasper structures, together with many novel structures. By applying the automated scheme to various block copolymers, a huge number of novel structures can be obtained to expand the structural library, which may create new opportunities for the scientific community.

Frank-Kasper-like network phase from self-assembly of high-χ star-block copolymers

By taking advantage of the effects of solvent selectivity and topology on high-χ block copolymer (BCP) for self-assembly, network phases with high packing frustration can be formed in self-assembled polystyrene-b-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS). Apart from gyroid with trigonal structure and diamond with tetrahedral structure, a peculiar network phase with space group of [Formula: see text] (Frank-Kasper structure) can be found in six-arm star-block PS-b-PDMS as evidenced by small-angle x-ray scattering. Electron tomography results reveal the network phase with alternating connection of three and four struts. The observed phase behaviors suggest that the network formation is built from the bisectors of dispersive spheres in the Frank-Kasper phase, instead of building connections among them, and thus decipher the origins of complex phase formation due to the adaptive character of malleable mesoatoms.

Inverse Design of Complex Block Copolymers for Exotic Self-Assembled Structures Based on Bayesian Optimization

Variable chain topologies of multiblock copolymers provide great opportunities for the formation of numerous self-assembled nanostructures with promising potential applications. However, the consequent large parameter space poses new challenges for searching the stable parameter region of desired novel structures. In this Letter, by combining Bayesian optimization (BO), fast Fourier transform-assisted 3D convolutional neural network (FFT-3DCNN), and self-consistent field theory (SCFT), we develop a data-driven and fully automated inverse design framework to search for the desired novel structures self-assembled by ABC-type multiblock copolymers. Stable phase regions of three exotic target structures are efficiently identified in high-dimensional parameter space. Our work advances the new research paradigm of inverse design in the field of block copolymers.

ABC-Type, Bola-Form Giant Surfactants: Synthesis and Self-Assembly

Due to the fast phase separation kinetics and small feature size, the self-assembly of giant molecules has attracted lots of attention. However, there is not much study on multicomponent giant surfactants. In this work, through a modular synthetic strategy, different polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based molecular nanoparticles are installed with diverse functionalities (hydrophobic octavinyl POSS (VPOSS), hydrophilic dihydroxyl-functionalized POSS (DPOSS), and omniphobic perfluoroalkyl-chain-functionalized POSS (FPOSS)) on the ends of one polystyrene (PS) chain to build up a series of triblock bola-form giant surfactants denoted as XPOSS-PS_n -FPOSS (X represents V or D). The target molecules are prepared by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), esterification, as well as Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and thiol-ene "click" reactions. These macromolecules are thoroughly characterized by combined technologies including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analyses. It is revealed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that VPOSS-PS_n -FPOSS adopts a two-phase separation scenario where VPOSS and POSS are segregated in one phase. DPOSS-PS_n -FPOSS with a third hydrophilic DPOSS shows a three-phase separation scenario, where highly ordered phase structures are difficult to develop owing to the competition of mutual phase separation processes and may be trapped in kinetically metastable states.

Alternating Gyroid in Block Polymer Blends

Alternating gyroid is a lower symmetry variant of the double gyroid morphology, where the left-handed and right-handed chiral networks are physically distinct. This structure is of particular interest for photonic applications owing to predictions of a complete photonic band gap subject to the requirement of a large dielectric contrast between the individual networks and sufficient optical matching between one of the networks and the matrix. We provide evidence, via self-consistent field theory (SCFT), that stoichiometric blends of double-gyroid-forming AB and BC diblock copolymers with relatively immiscible A and C blocks should form an alternating gyroid morphology with complementary three-dimensional A and C networks that have a free energy that is nearly degenerate with two phase-separated double gyroid states. Solvent casting offers the potential for trapping this binary mixture of diblock copolymers in this metastable alternating gyroid phase. Theory further predicts that the addition of a minuscule amount (<1%) of ABC triblock terpolymer will open an alternating gyroid stability window in the resulting ternary-phase diagram. The surfactant-like stabilization produced by the triblock is relatively insensitive to its exact composition provided the B-block forms a sufficiently long bridge between the A-rich and C-rich networks. This blending strategy provides significant synthetic and material processing advantages compared to prevailing methods to produce an alternating gyroid phase in block polymers.
