Length Effects of Short Alkyl Side Chains on Phase-Separated Structure and Dynamics of Hydrophobic Association Hydrogels

Engineering a polyvinyl butyral hydrogel as a thermochromic interlayer for energy-saving windows

Achieving mastery over light using thermochromic materials is crucial for energy-saving glazing. However, challenges such as high production costs, limited durability, and recyclability issues have hindered their widespread application in buildings. Herein, we develop a glass interlayer made of a polyvinyl butyral-based hydrogel swollen with LiCl solution. In addition to a fast, isochoric, and reversible transparency-to-opacity transition occurring as ambient temperatures exceed thermally comfortable levels, this hydrogel uniquely encompasses multiple features such as frost resistance, recyclability, scalability, and toughness. The combination of these features is achieved through a delicate balance of polyvinyl butyral's amphiphilicity and the suppression of network-forming phase separation. This design endows a nanostructured polyvinyl butyral-LiCl composite gel with swollen molecular segments linked by dispersed cross-linking sites in the form of hydrophobic nano-nodules. Upon laminating this hydrogel (a thickness of 0.3 mm), the resultant glazing product demonstrates approximately 90% luminous transmittance even at sub-zero temperatures, along with a significant modulation of solar and infrared radiation at 80.8% and 68.5%, respectively. Through simulations, we determined that windows equipped with the hydrogel could reduce energy consumption by 36% compared to conventional glass windows in warm seasons. The widespread adoption of polyvinyl butyral in construction underscores the promise of this hydrogel as a thermochromic interlayer for glazing.

Investigating Temperature-Dependent Microscopic Deformation in Tough and Self-Healing Hydrogel Using Time-Resolved USAXS

Tough and self-healing hydrogels are typically sensitive to loading rates or temperatures due to the dynamic nature of noncovalent bonds. Understanding the structure evolution under varying loading conditions can provide valuable insights for developing new tough soft materials. In this study, polyampholyte (PA) hydrogel with a hierarchical structure is used as a model system. The evolution of the microscopic structure during loading is investigated under varied loading temperatures. By combining ultra-small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) and Mooney-Rivlin analysis, it is elucidated that the deformation of bicontinuous hard/soft phase networks is closely correlated with the relaxation dynamics or strength of noncovalent bonds. At high loading temperatures, the gel is soft and ductile, and large affine deformation of the phase-separated networks is observed, correlated with the fast relaxation dynamics of noncovalent bonds. At low loading temperatures, the gel is stiff, and nonaffine deformation occurs from the onset of loading due to the substantial breaking of noncovalent bonds and limited chain mobility as well as weak adaptation of phase deformation to external stretch. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the relationship between structure and performance of tough and self-healing hydrogels.

LiTFSI-Free Hole Transport Materials for Robust Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules with High Efficiencies

Lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonamide (LiTFSI) and oxygen-doped organic semiconductors have been frequently used to achieve record power conversion efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, this conventional doping process is time-consuming and leads to poor device stability due to the incorporation of Li ions. Herein, aiming to accelerate the doping process and remove the Li ions, we report an alternative p-doping process by mixing a new small-molecule organic semiconductor, N2,N2,N7,N7-tetrakis (4-methoxyphenyl)-9-(4-(octyloxy) phenyl)-9H carbazole-2,7-diamine (labeled OH44) and its preoxidized form OH44+(TFSI-). With this method, a champion efficiency of 21.8% has been achieved for small-area PSCs, which is superior to the state-of-the-art EH44 and comparable with LiTFSI and oxygen-doped spiro-OMeTAD. Moreover, the stability of OH44-based PSCs is improved compared with those of EH44, maintaining more than 85% of its initial efficiency after aging in an ambient condition without encapsulation for 1000 h. In addition, we achieved efficiencies of 14.7 and 12.6% for the solar modules measured with a metal mask of 12.0 and 48.0 cm2, respectively, which demonstrated the scalability of this method.

Arrested Phase Separation Enables High-Performance Keratoprostheses

Corneal transplantation is impeded by donor shortages, immune rejection, and ethical reservations. Pre-made cornea prostheses (keratoprostheses) offer a proven option to alleviate these issues. Ideal keratoprostheses must possess optical clarity and mechanical robustness, but also high permeability, processability, and recyclability. Here, it is shown that rationally controlling the extent of arrested phase separation can lead to optimized multiscale structure that reconciles permeability and transparency, a previously conflicting goal by common pore-forming strategies. The process is simply accomplished by hydrothermally treating a dense and transparent hydrophobic association hydrogel. The examination of multiscale structure evolution during hydrothermal treatment reveals that the phase separation with upper miscibility gap evolves to confer time-dependent pore growth due to slow dynamics of polymer-rich phase which is close to vitrification. Such a process can render a combination of multiple desired properties that equal or surpass those of the state-of-the-art keratoprostheses. In vivo tests confirm that the keratoprosthesis can effectively repair corneal perforation and restore a transparent cornea with treatment outcomes akin to that of allo-keratoplasty. The keratoprosthesis is easy to access and convenient to carry, and thus would be an effective temporary substitute for a corneal allograft in emergency conditions.

Mechanically robust and highly bactericidal macroporous polymeric gels based on quaternized N,N-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate possessing varying alkyl chain lengths

In this paper, macroporous antimicrobial polymeric gels (MAPGs) functionalized with active quaternary ammonium cations attached to varying hydrocarbon chain lengths have been fabricated. Apart from the change in the alkyl chain length attached to the quaternary ammonium cation, the amount of crosslinker was also varied during the fabrication of the macroporous gels. The prepared gels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and swelling studies. In addition, the mechanical properties of the fabricated macroporous gels were studied using compression and tensile testing. The antimicrobial activity of the gels has been determined for Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) as well as Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus). Antimicrobial activity, as well as the mechanical properties of the macroporous gels, was found to be influenced by the alkyl chain length attached to the quaternary ammonium cations as well as by the amount of crosslinker used for the fabrication of the gel. In addition, on increasing the alkyl chain length from C4 (butyl) to C8 (octyl), the effectiveness of the polymeric gels increased. It was observed that the gels derived using a tertiary amine (NMe₂) containing monomer showed relatively low antimicrobial activity as compared to the gels obtained using quaternized monomers (C4 (butyl), C6 (hexyl), and C8 (octyl)). The gels based on the quaternized C8 monomer displayed the highest antimicrobial activity and mechanical stability as compared to the gels based on the C4 and C6 monomers.

High Mechanical Strength and Multifunctional Microphase-Separated Supramolecular Hydrogels Fabricated by Liquid-Crystalline Block Copolymer

The development of multifunctional supramolecular hydrogels with high mechanical strength and multifunction is in high demand. In this work, the diblock copolymer poly(acrylamide-co-1-benzyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide)-block-polyAzobenzene is synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The dynamic host-guest interactions between the host molecule cucurbit[8] uril and guest units are used to fabricate a 3D network of supramolecular hydrogels. Investigations on the properties of the supramolecular hydrogels show that the tensile stress of the sample is 1.46 MPa, eight times higher than that of hydrogel without liquid-crystalline block copolymer, and the self-healing efficiency of the supramolecular hydrogels at room temperature is 88.3% (fracture stress) and 100% (fracture strain) after 24 h. Results show that microphase-separated structure plays a key role in the high-strength hydrogel, whereas the host-guest interaction endows the hydrogel with self-healing properties. The supramolecular hydrogels with high mechanical strength, photo-responsivity, injectability, and biocompatibility can be used in various potential applications.

Red Disperse Azo Dye Side Chains Influence on Polyethylene Terephthalate Dyeing Performances in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Media

Supercritical carbon dioxide dyeing (SDD) as a dyeing media not only provides a friendly dyeing environment but also significantly increases polymeric dyeing performances ascribed to strong azo dye affinity. Disperse azo dyes have shown to be highly efficient dyeing agents due to their facile coupling synthesis, side chains position, and length tunability to optimize absorption properties. Herein, we first synthesize two series of disperse red azo dyes via a coupling chemical route. Further, we investigate the position of the electron withdrawing group and alkyl chains length impact onto the absorption and color fastness properties. Upon synthesis, ¹H NMR and mass spectroscopy were used to characterize our newly synthesized series dye structure. Also, according to spectroscopic characterization, the functional group positions as well as the alkyl chains length have a major impact on the dye series maximum light absorption wavelength and performance. We have performed SDD dyeing of polyethylene terephthalate woven and determined each dye color fastness, we find that a reduced electron withdrawing effect and alkyl chains increase reduce color-fastness performances. Overall, our dyes exhibited a good resistance against detergent water, perspiration, abrasion, and friction.

Advances in Cellulose-Based Hydrogels for Biomedical Engineering: A Review Summary

In recent years, hydrogel-based research in biomedical engineering has attracted more attention. Cellulose-based hydrogels have become a research hotspot in the field of functional materials because of their outstanding characteristics such as excellent flexibility, stimulus-response, biocompatibility, and degradability. In addition, cellulose-based hydrogel materials exhibit excellent mechanical properties and designable functions through different preparation methods and structure designs, demonstrating huge development potential. In this review, we have systematically summarized sources and types of cellulose and the formation mechanism of the hydrogel. We have reviewed and discussed the recent progress in the development of cellulose-based hydrogels and introduced their applications such as ionic conduction, thermal insulation, and drug delivery. Also, we analyzed and highlighted the trends and opportunities for the further development of cellulose-based hydrogels as emerging materials in the future.

Rationally Tuning Phase Separation in Polymeric Membranes toward Optimized All-day Passive Radiative Coolers

The all-day passive radiative cooler has emerged as one of the state-of-the-art energy-saving cooling tool kits but routinely suffers from limited processability, high cost, and complicated fabrication processes, which impede large-scale applications. To address these challenges, this work exploits a polymer-based passive radiative cooler with optimized turbidity, reconfigurability, and recyclability. These cooling membranes are fabricated via selective condensation of octyl side chain-modified polyvinyl alcohol through a non-solvent-induced phase separation method. The rational tuning over spatial organization and distribution of the air-polymer interface renders optimized bright whiteness with solar reflectance at 96%. Meanwhile, the abundant -C-O-C- bonds endow such membranes with infrared thermal emittance over 90%. The optimized membrane realizes a subambient cooling of ∼5.7 °C with an average cooling power of ∼81 W m-2 under a solar intensity of ∼528 W m-2. Furthermore, the supramolecule nature of the developed passive radiative cooling membrane bears enhanced shape malleability and recyclability, substantially enhancing its conformability to the complex geometry and extending its life for an eco-friendly society.

Synergic influences of network topologies and associative interactions on the microstructures and bulk performances of hydrogels

Revealing the relationship between network topologies and mechanical properties of hydrogels is fundamental yet challenging in the design of tough soft materials. Here, we report a series of hydrogels using N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) as the basic units to form a single network of the copolymer, a semi-interpenetrated network of two homopolymers, and a grafted network with homopolymer chains anchored on another homopolymer network, to investigate the influence of network architectures on the mechanical properties and thermal responses of the gels. We found that the properties of the gels are also significantly influenced by the formation of hydrogen bonds between poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) segments. The gels with the single network of poly(NIPAm-co-AAc) are mechanically weak due to the low efficiency for forming robust hydrogen bonds, while micro-segregated domains are formed in the hydrogels with a semi-interpenetrated network structure due to the formation of inter-chain hydrogen bonds that favors energy dissipation and toughening of the gels. On the other hand, dense hydrogen bonds form between the grafted PNIPAm chains and the PAAc network, resulting in nano-segregated domains and excellent mechanical properties of the gels. The hydrogels with the grafted network structure exhibit a more repeatable response to temperature than those with the semi-interpenetrated network structure due to the relatively stable hydrogen-bond network. The comparison of the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the hydrogels with the same composition but different topological networks should be informative for engineering hydrogel properties or functions by tailoring the network structures.
