Abstract
Molecular oxygen, O2, has long provided a cornerstone for studies in chemistry, physics, and biology. Although the triplet ground state, O2(X3Σg-), has garnered much attention, the lowest excited electronic state, O2(a1Δg), commonly called singlet oxygen, has attracted appreciable interest, principally because of its unique chemical reactivity in systems ranging from the Earth's atmosphere to biological cells. Because O2(a1Δg) can be produced and deactivated in processes that involve light, the photophysics of O2(a1Δg) are equally important. Moreover, pathways for O2(a1Δg) deactivation that regenerate O2(X3Σg-), which address fundamental principles unto themselves, kinetically compete with the chemical reactions of O2(a1Δg) and, thus, have practical significance. Due to technological advances (e.g., lasers, optical detectors, microscopes), data acquired in the past ∼20 years have increased our understanding of O2(a1Δg) photophysics appreciably and facilitated both spatial and temporal control over the behavior of O2(a1Δg). One goal of this Review is to summarize recent developments that have broad ramifications, focusing on systems in which oxygen forms a contact complex with an organic molecule M (e.g., a liquid solvent). An important concept is the role played by the M+•O2-• charge-transfer state in both the formation and deactivation of O2(a1Δg).

Abstract
As two-photon absorption (TPA) materials, phthalocyanine molecules have promising application prospects due to their large TPA absorption cross-section, high third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, and ultrafast response characteristics. In this work, optical properties and the ultrafast response of three modified zinc phthalocyanine molecules (P-HPcZn, Pc-P-Pc, and (DR1)4PcZn) were analyzed. No obvious side-shoulder absorption peaks in the Q-band can be observed from the steady-state absorption spectra of the three molecules, confirming the lack of aggregation products in the solutions of our measurement. Open-aperture Z-scan results show relatively large TPA cross-section values of 136.4 and 55.3 GM for Pc-P-Pc and (DR1)4PcZn, respectively. The nonlinear optical results show that the absorption process observed under the excitation of femtosecond pulses is a reverse saturable absorption (RSA) mechanism. Up-conversion fluorescence spectra of (DR1)4PcZn in THF solution indicate that the fluorescence emission mechanism is TPA. In the study of ultrafast dynamics, the transient absorption spectra were investigated and the decay lifetime of the dynamic traces corresponding to some representative probe wavelengths was obtained through data fitting with a multi-exponential function. Finally, the charge transfer and excited state properties of the modified zinc phthalocyanine molecules were discussed in depth by the DFT method. The energy gaps of P-HPcZn, Pc-P-Pc, and (DR1)4PcZn are 2.16, 1.39, and 2.13 eV, respectively. The results indicate that the Pc-P-Pc of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structure has the smallest energy gap as well as the best charge transfer properties.

Abstract
Dendrimers are polymers with well-defined 3D branched structures that are vastly utilized in various neurotheranostics and biomedical applications, particularly as nanocarrier vectors. Imaging agents can be loaded into dendrimers to improve the accuracy of diagnostic imaging processes. Likewise, combining pharmaceutical agents and anticancer drugs with dendrimers can enhance their solubility, biocompatibility, and efficiency. Practically, by modifying ligands on the surface of dendrimers, effective therapeutic and diagnostic platforms can be constructed and implemented for targeted delivery. Dendrimer-based nanocarriers also show great potential in gene delivery. Since enzymes can degrade genetic materials during their blood circulation, dendrimers exhibit promising packaging and delivery alternatives, particularly for central nervous system (CNS) treatments. The DNA and RNA encapsulated in dendrimers represented by polyamidoamine that are used for targeted brain delivery, via chemical-structural adjustments and appropriate generation, significantly improve the correlation between transfection efficiency and cytotoxicity. This article reports a comprehensive review of dendrimers' structures, synthesis processes, and biological applications. Recent progress in diagnostic imaging processes and therapeutic applications for cancers and other CNS diseases are presented. Potential challenges and future directions in the development of dendrimers, which provide the theoretical basis for their broader applications in healthcare, are also discussed.

Abstract
In recent years, the role of biocompatible nanocarriers (BNs) and their cancer cell targeting efficiency in photodynamic therapy (PDT) holds potential benefits for cancer treatment. Biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles are successfully used as carrier molecules to deliver cancer drugs and photosensitizers due to their material safety in the drug delivery system. Biocompatible nanocarriers are non-toxic and ensure high-level biocompatibility with blood, cells, and physiological conditions. The physicochemical properties of BNs often enable them to modify their surface chemistry, which makes conjugating specific ligands or antibodies to achieve cancer cell targeting drug delivery in PDT. This review article focuses on the various types of BNs used in targeted drug delivery, physicochemical properties, and surface chemistry of BNs in targeted drug delivery, advantages of BNs in drug delivery systems, and the targeting efficiency of BNs on some specific targeting receptors for cancer therapy. Furthermore, the review briefly recaps the nanocarrier-based targeted approaches in cancer PDT.

Abstract
Simple Summary Efficient photosensitizers for photodyanmic therapy (PDT) need to be soluble in physiologic media. This requirement often complicates significantly the chemical access to such compounds, resulting in lower availability and higher production costs for the best representatives. Given that their screening and selection is often initially conducted in organic media from series of hydrophobic model compounds, the possibility to use directly such hydrophobic photosensitizers in real PDT studies was highly desirable to speed up their definitive identification but also to alleviate their cost. In this respect, PMLABe polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) were presently probed as nanocarriers to water-solubilize hydophobic star-shaped porphyrin-based which turned out to be promising oxygen photosensitizers for theranostic approaches. We show here that PDT conducted using such NPs loaded with these compounds is as efficient than when functional hydrosoluble analogues of these photosensitiers are tested alone and that tracking of the photosensitizer by fluorescence imaging is even easier. Abstract Star-shaped hydrophobic porphyrins, acting as powerful fluorescent two-photon photosensitizers for oxygen in organic solvents, can easily be loaded into PMLABe polymeric nanoparticles at various concentrations. In this contribution, the performance of these porphyrin-containing nanoparticles in terms of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is compared to those of the corresponding water-soluble porphyrin analogues when irradiated in MCF-7 cancer cells. While quite promising results are obtained for performing PDT with these nanoparticles, validating this approach as a mean for using more easily accessible and less expensive photosensitizers, from a synthetic perspective, we also show that their luminescence can still be used for bioimaging purposes in spite of their confinement in the nanoparticles, validating also the use of these nano-objects for theranostic purposes.
