Liquid Crystal Materials for Biomedical Applications

Liquid crystal is a state of matter being intermediate between solid and liquid. Liquid crystal materials exhibit both orientational order and fluidity. While liquid crystals have long been highly recognized in the display industry, in recent decades, liquid crystals provide new opportunities into the cross-field of material science and biomedicine due to their biocompatibility, multifunctionality, and responsiveness. In this review, the latest achievements of liquid crystal materials applied in biomedical fields are summarized. The start is made by introducing the basic concepts of liquid crystals, and then shifting to the components of liquid crystals as well as functional materials derived therefrom. After that, the ongoing and foreseeable applications of liquid crystal materials in the biomedical field with emphasis put on several cutting-edge aspects, including drug delivery, bioimaging, tissue engineering, implantable devices, biosensing, and wearable devices are discussed. It is hoped that this review will stimulate ingenious ideas for the future generation of liquid crystal-based drug development, artificial implants, disease diagnosis, health status monitoring, and beyond.

Minimalist Design for Solar Energy Conversion: Revamping the π-Grid of an Organic Framework into Open-Shell Superabsorbers

We apply a versatile reaction to a versatile solid: the former involves the electron-deficient alkene tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) as the guest reactant; the latter consists of stacked 2D honeycomb covalent networks based on the electron-rich β-ketoenamine hinges that also activate the conjugated, connecting alkyne units. The TCNE/alkyne reaction is a [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) that forms strong push-pull units directly into the backbone of the framework-i.e., using only the minimalist "bare-bones" scaffold, without the need for additional side groups of alkynes or other functions. The ability of the stacked alkyne units (i.e., as part of the honeycomb mass) to undergo such extensive rearrangement highlights the structural flexibility of these covalent organic framework (COF) hosts. The COF solids remain porous, crystalline, and air-/water-stable after the CA-RE modification, while the resulting push-pull units feature distinct open-shell/free-radical character, are strongly light-absorbing, and shift the absorption ends from 590 nm to around 1900 nm (band gaps from 2.17-2.23 to 0.87-0.95 eV), so as to better capture sunlight (especially the infrared region which takes up 52% of the solar energy). As a result, the modified COF materials achieve the highest photothermal conversion performances, holding promise in thermoelectric power generation and solar steam generation (e.g., with solar-vapor conversion efficiencies >96%).

Reprocessable and Chemically Recyclable Hard Vitrimers Based on Liquid-Crystalline Epoxides

The rapid increase in demand for recyclable and reusable thermosets has necessitated the development of materials with chemical structures that exhibit these features. Thus, functional mesogenic epoxide monomers bearing both ester and imine groups that can be vitrimerized and recycled are reported herein. The compounds show mesophase characteristics at 100-200 °C and can be converted into hard epoxides by a common curing reaction. The obtained hard epoxides have high isotropic thermal conductivity (≈0.64 W m^-1 K^-1 ), which is derived from their highly ordered microstructures. The cured products can be easily reprocessed through imine metathesis and transesterification, and decomposed products can be obtained through imine hydrolysis under acidic or basic conditions and subsequently be re-cured. Surprisingly, recycled materials can be repeatedly reprocessed or chemically decomposed. The reprocessed materials retain the properties of their pristine counterparts, and the recycled products preserve the advantages of the hard thermosets without alteration to any of their unique properties. A dehydration reaction occurs between the residual hydroxyl groups during the re-hardening, which dramatically increases the glass transition temperature by ≈60 °C. These reprocessable and recyclable vitrimers demonstrate the effectiveness and environmental friendliness of the molecular design strategy reported herein.

Enhancing intrinsic thermal conductivities of epoxy resins by introducing biphenyl mesogen-containing liquid crystalline co-curing agents

Epoxy resins were prepared with an enhanced intrinsic thermal conductivity of 0.42 W (m K)−1 using a biphenyl mesogen-containing co-curing agent.
