Molecular, Crystalline, and Lamellar Length-Scale Changes in the Poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) during Cyclopentanone (CPO) Desorption in PLLA/CPO Cocrystals

Impact of polymer chain packing and crystallization on the emission behavior of curcumin-embedded poly(L-lactide)s

The development of biodegradable and biocompatible fluorescent materials with tunable emission in the solid state has become increasingly relevant for smart packaging and biomedical applications. Molecular packing and conformations play a critical role in tuning the solid-state photophysical properties of fluorescent materials. In this work, tunable emission of bioactive curcumin was achieved through the manipulation of the crystallization conditions and the polymorphic form of covalently linked poly(L-lactide) in the curcumin-embedded poly(L-lactide) (curcumin-PLLA). In the melt-crystallized curcumin-PLLA, with the increase in the isothermal crystallization temperature, a bathochromic shift in the fluorescence of curcumin-PLLA was observed due to the change in the intramolecular conjugation length of curcumin. The change in the isothermal crystallization temperature of curcumin-PLLA resulted in the rotation of the terminal phenyl rings of curcumin with respect to the central keto-enol group due to the covalently linked helical PLLA chains. In addition, solvent-induced single crystals and a gel of curcumin-PLLA were prepared and the influence of the polymorphic form of PLLA on the emission behavior of curcumin-PLLA was investigated. The results suggest that the polymer chain packing, crystallization conditions, morphology, and polymorphic form could play an influential role in dictating the fluorescence properties of fluorophore-embedded polymers.

Polydopamine-Coated Poly-Lactic Acid Aerogels as Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) aerogel-based scaffolds were obtained from physical PLLA gels containing cyclopentanone (CPO) or methyl benzoate (BzOMe) molecules. An innovative single step method of solvent extraction, using supercritical CO₂, was used to achieve cylindrical monolithic aerogels. The pore distribution and size, analyzed by SEM microscopy, were found to be related to the crystalline forms present in the physical nodes that hold the gels together, the stable α’-form and the metastable co-crystalline ε-form, detected in the PLLA/BzOMe and PLLA/CPO aerogels, respectively. A higher mechanical compressive strength was found for the PLLA/CPO aerogels, which exhibit a more homogenous porosity. In vitro biocompatibility tests also indicated that monolithic PLLA/CPO aerogels exhibited greater cell viability than PLLA/BzOMe aerogels. An improved biocompatibility of PLLA/CPO monolithic aerogels was finally observed by coating the surface of the aerogels with polydopamine (PDA) obtained by the in situ polymerization of dopamine (DA). The synergistic effect of biodegradable polyester (PLLA) and the biomimetic interface (PDA) makes this new 3D porous scaffold, with porosity and mechanical properties that are tunable based on the solvent used in the preparation process, attractive for tissue engineering applications.

Poly(l-lactide)s with tetraphenylethylene: role of polymer chain packing in aggregation-induced emission behavior of tetraphenylethylene

The AIE behavior of tetraphenylethylene in biocompatible poly(l-lactide)s is found to be sensitive to the polymer chain packing, polymer crystal structure, solvent, and temperature.

c-Perpendicular Orientation of Poly(ʟ-lactide) Films

Poly(ʟ-lactide) (PLLA) films, even of high thickness, exhibiting co-crystalline and crystalline α phases with their chain axes preferentially perpendicular to the film plane (c_⊥ orientation) have been obtained. This c_⊥ orientation, unprecedented for PLLA films, can be achieved by the crystallization of amorphous films as induced by low-temperature sorption of molecules being suitable as guests of PLLA co-crystalline forms, such as N,N-dimethylformamide, cyclopentanone or 1,3-dioxolane. This kind of orientation is shown and quantified by two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (2D-WAXD) patterns, as taken with the X-ray beam parallel to the film plane (EDGE patterns), which present all the hk0 arcs centered on the meridian. PLLA α-form films, as obtained by low-temperature guest-induced crystallization, also exhibit high transparency, being not far from those of the starting amorphous films.

Stereocomplexation of enantiomeric star-shaped poly(lactide)s with a chromophore core

Herein, we aim to investigate the influence of the cooling rate from the melt on stereocomplex formation of equimolar blends of enantiomeric star-shaped poly(lactide)s with a dipyridamole core.

Poly(l-lactic acid)/Boron Nitride Nanocomposites: Influence of Boron Nitride Functionalization on the Properties of Poly(l-lactic acid)

Differently functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) [hydroxyl (OH_BNNSs), amine (NH₂_BNNSs), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (PEG_BNNSs)] were synthesized, and their effects on the structure and thermal properties of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) along with those of the pristine BNNSs were studied. Highly dispersed nanocomposites were prepared using PLLA and 0.5 wt % of pristine/functionalized BNNSs via a solvent blending method. Homogeneous dispersion of BNNSs in the polymer matrix was confirmed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Pristine BNNSs and OH_BNNSs accelerated the crystallization of PLLA as effective nucleating agents and favored the formation of the α form in melt-crystallized samples. On the other hand, NH₂_BNNSs and PEG_BNNSs incorporated samples result in the moderate crystallization rate of PLLA and lead to the formation of a mixture of α and α' forms similar to the PLLA. It is also found that thermal stability and thermal conductivity of PLLA nanocomposites significantly depend on the type of functionalization of BNNSs. At 0.5 wt % loading, the thermal conductivity enhancement is maximum for PEG_BNNSs incorporated PLLA (∼62%), and that is only 9% for pristine BNNSs incorporated PLLA. The thermal stability of PLLA nanocomposites was significantly improved by 32-41 °C depending on the type of functionalized BNNSs compared to PLLA. It is proposed that the strong interaction between functionalized BNNSs and PLLA matrix is responsible for the improved thermal management properties.

Modulation of side chain crystallinity in alternating copolymers

A remarkable enhancement in crystalline melting temperature (T_m) was observed in a series of fatty acids and mPEG containing alternating copolymers with the lone increase in mPEG chain lengths.

Formation of Oriented Polar Crystals in Bulk Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/High-Aspect-Ratio Organoclay Nanocomposites

We have investigated the formation of lamellar crystals of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in the presence of oriented clay particles with different aspect ratios (ARs) and surface properties. Hot-melt screw extrusion of PVDF with 5 wt % of montmorillonite (AR ≈ 12) or fluoromica (AR ≈ 27) resulted in formation of phase-separated blends. Replacing the clays with their organoclay derivatives, organomontmorillonite or organofluoromica, resulted in the corresponding intercalated nanocomposites. The organoclays induced formation of polar β- and γ-polymorphs of PVDF in contrast to the α-polymorph, which dominates in the pure PVDF and the PVDF/clay blends. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance revealed that the content of the α-phase in the nanocomposites was never higher than 7% of the total crystalline phase, whereas the β/γ mass ratio was close to 1:2, irrespective of the AR or crystallization conditions. X-ray diffraction showed that the oriented particles with a larger AR caused orientation of the polar lamellar crystals of PVDF. In the presence of the organofluoromica, PVDF formed a chevron-like lamellar nanostructure, where the polymer chains are extended along the extrusion direction, whereas the lamellar crystals were slanted from normal to the extrusion direction. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments allowed the identification of the formation mechanism of the chevron-like nanostructure.

PVDF-MWNT interactions control process induced β-lamellar morphology and orientation in the nanocomposites

The effect of methylene blue (MB) modified multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the nucleation and morphology of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in comparison with the effect of MWNTs was systematically assessed by DSC, 13C NMR, FT-IR, TEM, WAXS and SAXS analysis. TEM analysis of ultra-microtomed samples revealed that MB modification enhanced the dispersibility of MWNTs in PVDF. Further, the nanocomposites were subjected to mechanical rolling and the synergistic effect of processing and fillers on the PVDF morphology (before and after rolling) at different length scales was studied. Both FT-IR and WAXS analyses suggested that mechanical rolling transforms α-PVDF to β-PVDF (ca. 88%). TEM and two-dimensional WAXS analyses revealed that the MWNTs and β-crystallites are oriented preferentially along the rolling direction and the degree of orientation is not influenced by the fillers suggesting that crystallite orientation is fully controlled by mechanical rolling. On the other hand, β-lamellae showed perpendicular orientation with respect to the rolling direction. Unlike β-crystallites, the β-lamellar morphology and orientation are highly governed by the fillers as evident from SAXS analysis. Using MWNTs and the MWNT-MB π-complex, we demonstrate that the β-lamellar morphology and degree of orientation are controlled by the extent of interaction of fillers with PVDF. Interestingly, both β-lamellar morphology and degree of orientation correlate well with the mechanical properties of the rolled PVDF. More specifically, the dynamic storage modulus of the samples in the rolling direction increases with increasing β-lamellar morphology and degree of orientation. The present work demonstrates that the polymer-filler interaction plays a crucial role in regulating the processed polymer morphology and can be tuned by appropriately modifying the surface of fillers through either covalent or non-covalent interactions.

Nonsolvent-induced morphological changes and nanoporosity in poly(l-lactide) films

The role of a nonsolvent in controlling the crystallization and morphology of solvent-crystallized poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) films was investigated using various microscopy techniques and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). PLLA films crystallized in THF and acetone had 40-80 μm spherulites. When water was present in the solvent, a completely different morphology was observed with nanosized voids and the surfaces of the films were smooth. In contrast, SEM studies revealed that the films crystallized in acetone and THF which had macroporous structures, had larger voids and film surfaces were rough because of the presence of globular structures. Voids appeared within the spherulites in the THF/water treated film, whereas crystals nucleated at the surface of the nanosized voids in acetone/water treated PLLA films. The formation of such voids is attributed to the interface-enhanced crystal nucleation in a solvent/nonsolvent system where the nonsolvent increases the polymer crystal nucleation and the subsequent evaporation of the nonsolvent. The method described in this work can be extended to other polymers to control the morphologies of polymer films during solvent-induced crystallization.
