Radical Generation and Termination in SARA ATRP of Methyl Acrylate: Effect of Solvent, Ligand, and Chain Length

Electrochemically Mediated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Driven by Alternating Current

Alternating current (AC) and pulsed electrolysis are gaining traction in electro(organic) synthesis due to their advantageous characteristics. We employed AC electrolysis in electrochemically mediated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (eATRP) to facilitate the regeneration of the activator CuI complex on Cu0 electrodes. Additionally, Cu0 served as a slow supplemental activator and reducing agent (SARA ATRP), enabling the activation of alkyl halides and the regeneration of the CuI activator through a comproportionation reaction. We harnessed the distinct properties of Cu0 dual regeneration, both chemical and electrochemical, by employing sinusoidal, triangular, and square-wave AC electrolysis alongside some of the most active ATRP catalysts available. Compared to linear waveform (DC electrolysis) or SARA ATRP (without electrolysis), pulsed and AC electrolysis facilitated slightly faster and more controlled polymerizations of acrylates. The same AC electrolysis conditions could successfully polymerize eleven different monomers across different mediums, from water to bulk. Moreover, it proved effective across a spectrum of catalyst activity, from low-activity Cu/2,2-bipyridine to highly active Cu complexes with substituted tripodal amine ligands. Chain extension experiments confirmed the high chain-end fidelity of the produced polymers, yielding functional and high molecular-weight block copolymers. SEM analysis indicated the robustness of the Cu0 electrodes, sustaining at least 15 consecutive polymerizations.

Surface Functionalization with Polymer Brushes via Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization: Synthesis, Applications, and Current Challenges

Polymer brushes have received great attention in recent years due to their distinctive properties and wide range of applications. The synthesis of polymer brushes typically employs surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) techniques. To realize the control of the polymerization process in different environments, various SI-ATRP techniques triggered by different stimuli have been developed. This review focuses on the latest developments in different stimuli-triggered SI-ATRP methods, such as electrochemically mediated, photoinduced, enzyme-assisted, mechanically controlled, and organocatalyzed ATRP. Additionally, SI-ATRP technology triggered by a combination of multiple stimuli sources is also discussed. Furthermore, the applications of polymer brushes in lubrication, biological applications, antifouling, and catalysis are also systematically summarized and discussed. Despite the advancements in the synthesis of various types of 1D, 2D, and 3D polymer brushes via controlled radical polymerization, contemporary challenges remain in the quest for more efficient and straightforward synthetic protocols that allow for precise control over the composition, structure, and functionality of polymer brushes. We anticipate the readers could promote the understanding of surface functionalization based on ATRP-mediated polymer brushes and envision future directions for their application in surface coating technologies.

Cu(0)-RDRP of acrylates using an alkyl iodide initiator

In the vast majority of atom transfer radical polymerizations, alkyl bromides or alkyl chlorides are commonly employed as initiators. Herein, alkyl iodides are demonstrated as ATRP initiators.

Dimensional Optimization for ZnO-Based Mechano-ATRP with Extraordinary Activity

Various piezoelectric nanomaterials were utilized in ultrasound-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), owing to their outstanding piezoelectric effect. However, the relationship between the morphology of those piezocatalysts and polymerization has not been clearly established. Herein, we employed different piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials to achieve novel mechano-induced ATRP (mechano-ATRP). Based on the synergistic effect of piezoelectric properties and specific surface area, the catalytic activity of 1D ZnO nanorods (1D-ZnO NRs) with increased aspect ratio outperformed that of 0D ZnO nanoparticles (0D-ZnO NPs). Compared to the conventional ATRP system, this system exhibited extraordinary activity toward the less activated monomer acrylonitrile (67% conversion after 6 h), with a narrow molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index ∼ 1.19). Furthermore, implications of ZnO loading, copper salt amount, degree of polymerization, monomer, and solvent were also studied for the highly efficient mechano-ATRP.

Dual electrochemical and chemical control in atom transfer radical polymerization with copper electrodes

In Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP), Cu⁰ acts as a supplemental activator and reducing agent (SARA ATRP) by activating alkyl halides and (re)generating the Cu^I activator through a comproportionation reaction, respectively. Cu⁰ is also an unexplored, exciting metal that can act as a cathode in electrochemically mediated ATRP (eATRP). Contrary to conventional inert electrodes, a Cu cathode can trigger a dual catalyst regeneration, simultaneously driven by electrochemistry and comproportionation, if a free ligand is present in solution. The dual regeneration explored herein allowed for introducing the concept of pulsed galvanostatic electrolysis (PGE) in eATRP. During a PGE, the process alternates between a period of constant current electrolysis and a period with no applied current in which polymerization continues via SARA ATRP. The introduction of no electrolysis periods without compromising the overall polymerization rate and control is very attractive, if large current densities are needed. Moreover, it permits a drastic charge saving, which is of unique value for a future scale-up, as electrochemistry coupled to SARA ATRP saves energy, and shortens the equipment usage.

The use of a Cu cathode in eATRP allows exploiting the synergistic effect between electrochemical and chemical stimuli to halt or accelerate polymerizations, reduce energy consumption and achieve control in challenging systems.

Tandem Living Insertion and Controlled Radical Polymerization for Polyolefin-Polyvinyl Block Copolymers

Practical synthesis of polyolefin-polyvinyl block copolymers remains a challenge for transition-metal catalyzed polymerizations. Common approaches functionalize polyolefins for post-radical polymerization via insertion methods, yet sacrifice the livingness of the olefin polymerization. This work identifies an orthogonal radical/spin coupling technique which affords tandem living insertion and controlled radical polymerization. The broad tolerance of this coupling technique has been demonstrated for diverse radical/spin traps such as 2,2,5-trimethyl-4-phenyl-3-azahexane-3-nitroxide (TIPNO), 1-oxyl- (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine) -4-yl-α-bromoisobutyrate (TEMPO-Br), and N-tert -butyl-α-phenylnitrone (PBN). Subsequent controlled radical polymerization is demonstrated with NMP and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), yielding polyolefin-polyvinyl di- and triblock copolymers ( Đ <1.3) with acrylic, vinylic and styrenic segments. These findings highlight radical trapping as an approach to expand the scope of polyolefin functionalization techniques to access polyolefin macroinitiators.

Tuning Ligand Concentration in Cu(0)-RDRP: A Simple Approach to Control Polymer Dispersity

Cu(0)-reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) is a versatile polymerization tool, providing rapid access to well-defined polymers while utilizing mild reaction conditions and low catalyst loadings. However, thus far, this method has not been applied to tailor dispersity, a key parameter that determines the physical properties and applications of polymeric materials. Here, we report a simple to perform method, whereby Cu(0)-RDRP can systematically control polymer dispersity (Đ = 1.07-1.72), while maintaining monomodal molecular weight distributions. By varying the ligand concentration, we could effectively regulate the rates of initiation and deactivation, resulting in polymers of various dispersities. Importantly, both low and high dispersity PMA possess high end-group fidelity, as evidenced by MALDI-ToF-MS, allowing for a range of block copolymers to be prepared with different dispersity configurations. The scope of our method can also be extended to include inexpensive ligands (i.e., PMDETA), which also facilitated the polymerization of lower propagation rate constant monomers (i.e., styrene) and the in situ synthesis of block copolymers. This work significantly expands the toolbox of RDRP methods for tailoring dispersity in polymeric materials.

Catalytic Halogen Exchange in Supplementary Activator and Reducing Agent Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization for the Synthesis of Block Copolymers

Synthesis of block copolymers (BCPs) by catalytic halogen exchange (cHE) is reported, using supplemental activator and reducing agent Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SARA ATRP). The cHE mechanism is based on the use of a small amount of a copper catalyst in the presence of a suitable excess of halide ions, for the synthesis of block copolymers from macroinitiators with monomers of mismatching reactivity. cHE overcomes the problem of inefficient initiation in block copolymerizations in which the second monomer provides dormant species that are more reactive than the initiator. Model macroinitiators with low dispersity are prepared and extended to afford well-defined block copolymers of various compositions. Combined cHE/SARA ATRP is therefore a simple and potent polymerization tool for the copolymerization of a wide range of monomers allowing the production of tailored block copolymers.

p-Substituted Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amines as Ligands for Highly Active ATRP Catalysts: Facile Synthesis and Characterization

A facile and efficient two-step synthesis of p-substituted tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) ligands to form Cu complexes with the highest activity to date in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is presented. In the divergent synthesis, p-Cl substituents in tris(4-chloro-2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA^3Cl ) were replaced in one step and high yield by electron-donating cyclic amines (pyrrolidine (TPMA^PYR ), piperidine (TPMA^PIP ), and morpholine (TPMA^MOR )) by nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The [Cu^II (TPMA^NR2 )Br]⁺ complexes exhibited larger energy gaps between frontier molecular orbitals and >0.2 V more negative reduction potentials than [Cu^II (TPMA)Br]⁺ , indicating >3 orders of magnitude higher ATRP activity. [Cu^I (TPMA^PYR )]⁺ exhibited the highest reported activity for Br-capped acrylate chain ends in DMF, and moderate activity toward C-F bonds at room temperature. ATRP of n-butyl acrylate using only 10-25 part per million loadings of [Cu^II (TPMA^NR2 )Br]⁺ exhibited excellent control.

In Vivo Anti-Biofilm and Anti-Bacterial Non-Leachable Coating Thermally Polymerized on Cylindrical Catheter

Catheters are indispensable tools of modern medicine, but catheter-associated infection is a significant clinical problem, even when stringent sterile protocols are observed. When the bacteria colonize catheter surfaces, they tend to form biofilms making them hard to treat with conventional antibiotics. Hence, there is a great need for inherently antifouling and antibacterial catheters that prevent bacterial colonization. This paper reports the preparation of nonleachable antibiofilm and antibacterial cationic film coatings directly polymerized from actual tubular silicone catheter surfaces via the technique of supplemental activator and reducing agent surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SARA SI-ATRP). Three cross-linked cationic coatings containing (3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (AMPTMA) or quaternized polyethylenimine methacrylate (Q-PEI-MA) together with a cross-linker (polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate, PEGDMA) were tested. The in vivo antibacterial and antibiofilm effect of these nonleachable covalently linked coatings (using a mouse catheter model) can be tuned to achieve 1.95 log (98.88%) reduction and 1.26 log (94.51%) reduction of clinically relevant pathogenic bacteria (specifically with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE)). Our good in vivo bactericidal killing results using the murine catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) model show that SARA SI-ATRP grafting-from technique is a viable technique for making nonleachable antibiofilm coating even on "small" (0.30/0.64 mm inner/outer diameter) catheter.
