Abstract
Installing ketones into a polymer backbone is a known method for introducing photodegradability into polymers; however, most current methods are limited to ethylene-carbon monoxide copolymerization. Here we use isocyanides in place of carbon monoxide in a copolymerization strategy to access degradable nonalternating poly(ketones) that either maintain or enhance the thermal properties. A cobalt-mediated radical polymerization of acrylates and isocyanides synthesizes nonalternating poly(acrylate-co-isocyanide) copolymers with tunable incorporation using monomer feed ratios. The kinetic product of the polymerization is a dynamic β-imine ester that tautomerizes to the β-enamine ester. Hydrolysis of this copolymer affords a third copolymer microstructure─the elusive nonalternating poly(ketone)─from a single copolymerization strategy. Analysis of the copolymer properties demonstrates tunable thermal properties with the degree of incorporation. Finally, we show that poly(acrylate-co-isocyanide) and poly(acrylate-co-ketone) are photodegradable with 390 nm light, enabling chain cleavage.

Abstract
Research on solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) is now moving beyond the realm of polyethers that have dominated the field for several decades. A promising alternative group of candidates for SPE host materials is carbonyl-containing polymers. In this work, SPE properties of three different types of carbonyl-coordinating polymers are compared: polycarbonates, polyesters, and polyketones. The investigated polymers were chosen to be as structurally similar as possible, with only the functional group being different, thereby giving direct insights into the role of the noncoordinating main-chain oxygens. As revealed by experimental measurements as well as molecular dynamics simulations, the polyketone possesses the lowest glass transition temperature, but the ion transport is limited by a high degree of crystallinity. The polycarbonate, on the other hand, displays a relatively low coordination strength but is instead limited by its low molecular flexibility. The polyester performs generally as an intermediate between the other two, which is reasonable when considering its structural relation to the alternatives. This work demonstrates that local changes in the coordinating environment of carbonyl-containing polymers can have a large effect on the overall ion conduction, thereby also showing that desired transport properties can be achieved by fine-tuning the polymer chemistry of carbonyl-containing systems.

Abstract
Bottlebrush polymers can be used to introduce novel surface properties including hydrophilicity, stimuli-responsiveness, and reduced friction forces. However, simple, general, and efficient approaches to cross-linking bottlebrush polymer films and coatings are limited. Here, we report that bottlebrush polymers with an unsaturated polynorbornene backbone and thiol-terminated side chains can be cross-linked on demand by UV irradiation to produce uniform and insoluble bottlebrush polymer coatings. To quantify the kinetics and efficiency of cross-linking by UV exposure (254 nm), we measured the normalized residual thickness (NRT) of bottlebrush and linear polymer films after UV exposure and solvent washing. For bottlebrush polymers with thiol-terminated polystyrene (PS) side chains, the NRT exceeded 60% for a UV dose of 1.0 J/cm2, while unfunctionalized linear PS required a dose of 7.9 J/cm2 to achieve similar NRT values. Rapid UV-induced cross-linking of the bottlebrush PS was attributed to the thiol-ene coupling of the thiol-terminated side chains with the unsaturated polynorbornene backbones, as demonstrated through FTIR measurements and control studies involving bottlebrush polymers with saturated backbones. To establish the broader applicability of this approach, UV-induced cross-linking was demonstrated for thin films of bottlebrush polymers with thiol-terminated poly(methyl acrylate) (BB-PMMA-SH) side chains and those with poly(ethylene glycol) (BB-PEG) and poly(lactic acid) (BB-PLA) side chains which do not contain thiol end groups. UV-induced cross-linking of BB-PEG and BB-PLA films required the use of a multifunctional thiol additive. Finally, we demonstrated that bottlebrush polymer multilayers can be fabricated through sequential deposition and UV-induced cross-linking of different bottlebrush polymer chemistries. The cross-linking process outlined in this work is simple, general, and efficient and produces solvent-resistant coatings that preserve the unique properties and functions of bottlebrush polymers.
