Amphiphilic Block Copolymers as Stabilizers in Emulsion Polymerization: Effects of the Anchoring Block Molecular Weight Dispersity on Stabilization Performance

Prevention of marine biofouling in the aquaculture industry by a coating based on polydimethylsiloxane-chitosan and sodium polyacrylate

In this study, a series of novel hydrophobic/hydrophilic hybrid (HHH) coatings with the feature of preventing the fouling phenomenon was fabricated based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), as matrix and two hydrophilic polymers: chitosan and sodium polyacrylate, as dispersed phases. Antibacterial activity, pseudo-barnacle adhesion strength, surface free energy, water contact angle, and water absorption were performed for all samples. Evaluating field immersion of the samples was performed in the natural seawater. The results showed that the dispersed phase containing PDMS coatings showed simultaneously both of antibacterial activity and foul release behavior. Among the samples, the PCs4 coating containing 4 wt% Cs indicated the lowest pseudo barnacle adhesion strength (0.04 MPa), the lowest surface free energy (18.94 mN/m), the highest water contact angle (116.05°), and the percentage of fouling organisms 9.8 % after 30 days immersion. The HHH coatings can be considered as novel eco-friendly antifouling/foul release coatings for aquaculture applications.

Amphiphilic Polymers for Color Dispersion: Toward Stable and Low-Viscosity Inkjet Ink

Amphiphilic random and block copolymers were synthesized as potential inkjet inks. This study evaluated the potential of these polymers for color dispersion by examining the following factors: surface tension, zeta potential, viscosity, and particle size. Acrylic acid and (ethoxyethoxy)ethyl acrylate were used as the hydrophilic molecular units. Styrene, butyl acrylate, and phenoxyethyl acrylate were used as hydrophobic units. Color dispersions were prepared by using organic dye and these amphiphilic polymers. The color dispersions containing random copolymers exhibited low viscosity, which is preferable for jetting, but the dye particles tended to sediment after the thermal aging test. In contrast, those containing block copolymers showed high viscosity, which was unsuitable for jetting. However, they retained their initial dispersion state after the aging test. The advantages and disadvantages of each monomer arrangement (random or block) were demonstrated, providing a future outlook on the molecular design of polymer dispersants for color dispersions.

Structural Difference in Macro-RAFT Agents Redirects Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has served as a versatile platform for the large-scale preparation of well-defined block copolymer nano-objects. It appears to be "common sense" that block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions are inevitable. In this study, we have conducted the direct comparison of reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT)-mediated PISA of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) using polymethacrylate- and polyacrylate-based macro-RAFT agents. Taking advantage of the poor RAFT controllability of polyacrylate-based macro-RAFT agents with respect to HPMA, uniform submicron-sized polymeric microspheres were prepared by photoinitiated RAFT-mediated PISA of HPMA. The diameter of polymeric microspheres can be precisely controlled by further chain-extension of PHPMA. Finally, uniform epoxy-functionalized multicompartment block copolymer particles (MBCPs) were prepared by a two-step photoinitiated RAFT-mediated PISA with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGlyMA) as the third block. The performance of MBCPs as Pickering emulsifiers was evaluated in detail. This study not only expands the scope of RAFT-mediated PISA for preparing well-defined polymer particles but also provides important insights into the mechanism of RAFT-mediated PISA.
