Wetting Behavior of Polymer Droplets: Effects of Droplet Size and Chain Length

Deposition patterns formed by the evaporation of linear diblock copolymer solution nanodroplets on solid surfaces

The evaporation-induced deposition pattern of the linear diblock copolymer solution has attracted attention in recent years. Given its critical applications, we study deposition patterns of the linear diblock copolymer solution nanodroplet on a solid surface (the wall) by molecular dynamics simulations. This study focuses on the influence of the nonbonded interaction strength, including the interaction between the wall and polymer blocks (ɛAW and ɛBW), the interaction between the solvent and the wall (ɛSW), and the interaction between polymer blocks (ɛAB). Conditions leading to diverse deposition patterns are explored, including the coffee-ring and the volcano-like structures. The formation of the coffee-ring structure is attributed to receding interfaces, the heterogeneity inside the droplet, and the self-assembly of polymer chains. This study contributes to the establishment of guidelines for designing deposition patterns of the linear diblock copolymer solution nanodroplet, which facilitates practical applications such as inkjet printing.

Semicrystalline Polymer Micro/Nanostructures Formed by Droplet Evaporation of Aqueous Poly(ethylene oxide) Solutions: Effect of Solution Concentration

Deposits formed after evaporation of sessile droplets, containing aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide), on hydrophilic glass substrates were studied experimentally and mathematically as a function of the initial solution concentration. The macrostructure and micro/nanostructures of deposits were studied using stereo microscopy and atomic force microscopy. A model, based on thin-film lubrication theory, was developed to evaluate the deposit macrostructure by estimating the droplet final height. Moreover, the model was extended to evaluate the micro/nanostructure of deposits by estimating the rate of supersaturation development in connection with the driving force of crystallization. Previous studies had only described the macrostructure of poly(ethylene oxide) deposits formed after droplet evaporation, whereas the focus of our study was the deposit micro/nanostructures. Our atomic force microscopy study showed that regions close to the deposit periphery were composed of predominantly semicrystalline micro/nanostructures in the form of out-of-plane lamellae, which require a high driving force of crystallization. However, deposit central areas presented semicrystalline micro/nanostructures in the form of in-plane terraces and spirals, which require a lower driving force of crystallization. Increasing the initial concentration of solutions led to an increase in the lengths and thicknesses of the out-of-plane lamellae at the deposits' periphery and enhanced the tendency to form spirals in the central areas. Our numerical study suggested that the rate of supersaturation development and thus the driving force of crystallization increased from the center toward the periphery of droplets, and the supersaturation rate was lower for solutions with higher initial concentrations at each radius. Therefore, periphery areas of droplets with lower initial concentrations were suitable for the formation of micro/nanostructures which require higher driving forces, whereas central areas of droplets with higher initial concentration were desirable for the formation of micro/nanostructures which require lower driving forces. These numerical results were in good qualitative agreement with the experimental findings.

Novel Diffusion Mechanism of Polymers Pinned to an Attractive Impurity

Actual substrates unavoidably possess, to some extent, defects and dirt, which motivate understanding the impact due to their presence. The presence of a substrate naturally breaks symmetries. Additionally, it effectively reduces spatial dimensionality, which favors fluctuation-dominated behavior, but it also provides a multitude of possible interactions. We show evidence of novel behavior in the case of polymer mass transport at a crystalline substrate when a single attractive impurity is present. Specifically, we introduce a model system describing how an attractive impurity pins adsorbed polymers on a substrate. We propose a novel mechanism to explain the size scaling dependence of the diffusion coefficient as D∼N−3/2 for polymers with N monomers. Additionally, the size dependence of the diffusion coefficient scales can be described as D∼N−δ, with δ=1.51 as determined from extensive simulations.

Irreversible adsorption of polymer melts and nanoconfinement effects

For almost a decade, growing experimental evidence has revealed a strong correlation between the properties of nanoconfined polymers and the number of chains irreversibly adsorbed onto nonrepulsive interfaces, e.g. the supporting substrate of thin polymer coatings, or nanofillers dispersed in polymer melts. Based on such a correlation, it has already been possible to tailor structural and dynamics properties - such as the glass transition temperature, the crystallization rate, the thermal expansion coefficients, the viscosity and the wettability - of nanomaterials by controlling the adsorption kinetics. This evidence indicates that irreversible adsorption affects nanoconfinement effects. More recently, also the opposite phenomenon was experimentally observed: nanoconfinement alters interfacial interactions and, consequently, also the number of chains adsorbed in equilibrium conditions. In this review we discuss this intriguing interplay between irreversible adsorption and nanoconfinement effects in ultrathin polymer films. After introducing the methods currently used to prepare adsorbed layers and to measure the number of irreversibly adsorbed chains, we analyze the models employed to describe the kinetics of adsorption in polymer melts. We then discuss the structure of adsorbed polymer layers, focusing on the complex macromolecular architecture of interfacial chains and on their thermal expansion; we examine the way in which the structure of the adsorbed layer affects the thermal glass transition temperature, vitrification, and crystallization. By analyzing segmental dynamics of 1D confined systems, we describe experiments to track the changes in density during adsorption. We conclude this review with an analysis of the impact of nanoconfinement on adsorption, and a perspective on future work where we also address the key ideas of irreversibility, equilibration and long-range interactions.
