Hydrogen-Bonding Strength Influences Hierarchical Self-Assembled Structures in Unusual Miscible/Immiscible Diblock Copolymer Blends

Phase Behavior of Binary Blends of Diblock Copolymers: Progress and Opportunities

The phase behavior of binary blends of diblock copolymers has been examined extensively in the past decades. Experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated that mixing two different block copolymers provides an efficient and versatile route to regulate their self-assembled morphologies. A good understanding of the principles governing the self-assembly of block copolymer blends has been obtained from the study of A1B1/A2B2 diblock copolymer blends. The second (A2B2) diblocks could act synergistically as fillers and cosurfactants to regulate the domain size and interfacial properties, resulting in the formation of ordered phases not found in the parent (A1B1 or A2B2) diblock copolymer melts. The study of A1B1/A2B2 block copolymer blends further provides a solid foundation for future research on more complex block copolymer blends.

Construction of micelles and hollow spheres via the self-assembly behavior of poly(styrene-alt-pHPMI) copolymers with poly(4-vinylpyridine) derivatives mediated by hydrogen bonding interactions

This study describes the preparation of hydrogen bonding connected micelles, consisting of a poly(styrene-alt-(para-hydroxyphenylmaleimide)) [poly(S-alt-pHPMI)] core and a poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) derivative shell in a selective solvent. The aim was to modify hydrogen bonding interaction sites at the core/shell interface by synthesizing P4VP derivatives in three different sequences, namely, P4VP homopolymers, PS-co-P4VP random copolymers, and block copolymers. TEM images showed the successful self-assembly of poly(S-alt-pHPMI)/PS-co-P4VP inter-polymer complexes into spherical structures. To dissolve the core structures, 1,4-dibromobutane was used as a cross-linking agent to tighten the PS-co-P4VP shell. The morphologies, particle sizes, hydrogen bonding, cross-linking reaction, and core dissolution were confirmed by TEM, DLS, FTIR, and AFM analyses. Poly(S-alt-pHPMI)/PS₄₁-r-P4VP₅₉ hydrogen bonding connected micelles, cross-linked micelles, and hollow spheres were larger and more irregular than poly(S-alt-pHPMI)/P4VP inter-polymer complexes due to the random copolymer architecture and the decrease in intermolecular hydrogen bonds. However, poly(S-alt-pHPMI)/PS₆₈-b-P4VP₃₂ resulted in rod- or worm-like structures after core dissolution.

Robust Full-Spectral Color Tuning of Photonic Colloids

Creation of color through photonic morphologies manufactured by molecular self-assembly is a promising approach, but the complexity and lack of robustness of the fabrication processes have limited their technical exploitation. Here, it is shown that photonic spheres with full-color tuning across the entire visible spectrum can be readily and reliably achieved by the emulsification of solutions containing a block copolymer (BCP) and two swelling additives. Solvent diffusion out of the emulsion droplets gives rise to 20-150 µm-sized spheres with an onion-like lamellar morphology. Controlling the lamellar thickness by differential swelling with the two additives enables color tuning of the Bragg interference-based reflection band across the entire visible spectrum. By studying five different systems, a set of important principles for manufacturing photonic colloids is established. Two swelling additives are required, one of which must exhibit strong interactions with one of the BCP blocks. The additives should be chosen to enhance the dielectric contrast, and the formation kinetics of the spheres must be sufficiently slow to enable the emergence of the photonic morphology. The proposed approach is versatile and robust and allows the scalable production of photonic pigments with possible future applications in inks for cosmetics and arts, coatings, and displays.

Progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids

This Review describes recent progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic POSS hybrids derived from mono-, di-, and multi-functionalized POSS cages. We highlight the self-assembled structures and physical properties of giant surfactants and chain-end- and side-chain-type hybrids derived from mono-functionalized POSS cages; main-chain-type hybrids derived from di-functionalized POSS cages; and star-shaped hybrids derived from multi-functionalized POSS cages; with various polymeric attachments, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenolic, PVPh, and polypeptides.

Intra- and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding in Miscible Blends of CO2/Epoxy Cyclohexene Copolymer with Poly(Vinyl Phenol)

In this study, we synthesized a poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) through alternative ring-opening copolymerization of CO₂ with cyclohexene oxide (CHO) mediated by a binary LZn₂OAc₂ catalyst at a mild temperature. A two-dimensional Fourier transform infrared (2D FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that strong intramolecular [C–H···O=C] hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) occurred in the PCHC copolymer, thereby weakening its intermolecular interactions and making it difficult to form miscible blends with other polymers. Nevertheless, blends of PCHC with poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh), a strong hydrogen bond donor, were miscible because intermolecular H-bonding formed between the PCHC C=O units and the PVPh OH units, as evidenced through solid state NMR and one-dimensional and 2D FTIR spectroscopic analyses. Because the intermolecular H-bonding in the PCHC/PVPh binary blends were relatively weak, a negative deviation from linearity occurred in the glass transition temperatures (T_g). We measured a single proton spin-lattice relaxation time from solid state NMR spectra recorded in the rotating frame [T_1ρ(H)], indicating full miscibility on the order of 2–3 nm; nevertheless, the relaxation time exhibited a positive deviation from linearity, indicating that the hydrogen bonding interactions were weak, and that the flexibility of the main chain was possibly responsible for the negative deviation in the values of T_g.

High-Molecular-Weight PLA-b-PEO-b-PLA Triblock Copolymer Templated Large Mesoporous Carbons for Supercapacitors and CO2 Capture

High-molecular-weight PLA₄₄₀-b-PEO₄₅₄-b-PLA₄₄₀ (LEL) triblock copolymer was synthesized through simple ring-opening polymerization (ROP) by using the commercial homopolymer HO-PEO₄₅₄-OH as the macro-initiator. The material acted as a single template to prepare the large mesoporous carbons by using resol-type phenolic resin as a carbon source. Self-assembled structures of phenolic/LEL blends mediated by hydrogen bonding interaction were determined by FTIR and SAXS analyses. Through thermal curing and carbonization procedures, large mesoporous carbons (>50 nm) with a cylindrical structure and high surface area (>600 m²/g) were obtained because the OH units of phenolics prefer to interact with PEO block rather than PLA block, as determined by FTIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, higher CO₂ capture and good energy storage performance were observed for this large mesoporous carbon, confirming that the proposed approach provides an easy method for the preparation of large mesoporous materials.

Main Chain-Type Block Copolymers through Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization from Double-Decker-Shaped Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Hybrids

In this study, we synthesized two main chain-type block copolymers featuring hydrogen bond donor and acceptor segments through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a bifunctionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticle as the initiator. Hydrosilylation of vinylbenzyl chloride at the two corners of a double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) provided the bifunctionalized benzyl chloride initiator VBC-DDSQ-VBC, which we applied as a platform to prepare a main chain-type polystyrene homopolymer (PS-DDSQ-PS), the diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP-b-PS-DDSQ-PS-b-P4VP), and the diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-tert-butoxystyrene) (PtBuOS-b-PS-DDSQ-PS-b-PtBuOS) through sequential ATRP. Selective hydrolysis of the tert-butoxyl units of PtBuOS-b-PS-DDSQ-PS-b-PtBuOS yielded the strongly hydrogen bonding diblock copolymer poly (styrene-b-vinylphenol) (PVPh-b-PS-DDSQ-PS-b-PVPh). We used Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, mass-analyzed laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy to investigate the chemical structures, thermal behavior, and self-assembled nanostructures formed by these main chain-type block copolymers based on DDSQ.

Glass Transition Behaviors of Poly (Vinyl Pyridine)/Poly (Vinyl Phenol) Revisited

We examined the composition and molecular weight dependence of the glass transition temperature in detail for two types of hydrogen bonding miscible blends: poly (2-vinyl pyridine)/poly (vinyl phenol) (2VPy/VPh) and poly (4-vinyl pyridine)/poly (vinyl phenol) (4VPy/VPh). Regarding the functional form of the glass transition temperature, Tg, as a function of the weight fraction, we found a weak deviation from the Kwei equation for 2VPy/VPh blends. In contrast, such a deviation was not observed for the 4VPy/VPh blend. By relating the difference in the functional forms of Tg between the two blend systems to the difference in hydrogen bonding ability, we proposed a modified version of the Kwei equation. As for the interaction parameter, q in the Kwei equation, clear molecular weight dependence was observed for 2VPy/VPh blends: the lower the VPh molecular weight in the oligomer level, the higher the q values, suggesting the higher hydrogen bonding formability near the polymer chain ends than the middle part of a polymer chain.

Hierarchical Self-Assembled Structures from Diblock Copolymer Mixtures by Competitive Hydrogen Bonding Strength

In this work we prepared poly(styrene⁻b⁻vinylphenol) (PS-b-PVPh) by sequential anionic living polymerization and poly(ethylene oxide-b-4-vinylpyridine) (PEO-b-P4VP) by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) by using poly(ethylene oxide) 4-cyano-4-(phenylcarbonothioylthio)pentanoate (PEO-SC(S)Ph) as a macroinitiator with two hydrogen bonded acceptor groups. When blending with disordered PEO-b-P4VP diblock copolymer, we found the order-order self-assembled structure transition from lamellar structure for pure PS-b-PVPh to cylindrical, worm-like, and finally to PEO crystalline lamellar structures. Taking the advantage of the ΔK effect from competitive hydrogen bonding strengths between PVPh/P4VP and PVPh/PEO domains, it could form the hierarchical self-assembled morphologies such as core⁻shell cylindrical nanostructure.
