Domain Structures of Poly(3-dodecylthiophene)-Based Block Copolymers Depend on Regioregularity

Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-PM6 Polymer Donors for High-Performance and Mechanically Robust Polymer Solar Cells

High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stretchability are the dual requirements for the wearable application of polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, most efficient photoactive films are mechanically brittle. In this work, highly efficient (PCE = 18%) and mechanically robust (crack-onset strain (COS) = 18%) PSCs are acheived by designing block copolymer (BCP) donors, PM6-b-PDMSx (x = 5k, 12k, and 19k). In these BCP donors, stretchable poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) blocks are covalently linked with the PM6 blocks to effectively increase the stretchability. The stretchability of the BCP donors increases with a longer PDMS block, and PM6-b-PDMS_19k :L8-BO PSC exhibits a high PCE (18%) and 9-times higher COS value (18%) compared to that (COS = 2%) of the PM6:L8-BO-based PSC. However, the PM6:L8-BO:PDMS_12k ternary blend shows inferior PCE (5%) and COS (1%) due to the macrophase separation between PDMS and active components. In the intrinsically stretchable PSC, the PM6-b-PDMS_19k :L8-BO blend exhibits significantly greater mechanical stability PCE_80% ((80% of the initial PCE) at 36% strain) than those of the PM6:L8-BO blend (PCE_80% at 12% strain) and the PM6:L8-BO:PDMS ternary blend (PCE_80% at 4% strain). This study suggests an effective design strategy of BCP P_D to achieve stretchable and efficient PSCs.

Group 16 conjugated polymers based on furan, thiophene, selenophene, and tellurophene

Five-membered aromatic rings containing Group 16 elements (O, S, Se, and Te), also referred as chalcogenophenes, are ubiquitous building blocks for π-conjugated polymers (CPs). Among these, polythiophenes have been established as a model system to study the interplay between molecular structure, solid-state organization, and electronic performance. The judicious substitution of alternative heteroatoms into polythiophenes is a promising strategy for tuning their properties and improving the performance of derived organic electronic devices, thus leading to the recent abundance of CPs containing furan, selenophene, and tellurophene. In this review, we first discuss the current status of Kumada, Negishi, Murahashi, Suzuki-Miyaura, and direct arylation polymerizations, representing the best routes to access well-defined chalcogenophene-containing homopolymers and copolymers. The self-assembly, optical, solid-state, and electronic properties of these polymers and their influence on device performance are then summarized. In addition, we highlight post-polymerization modifications as effective methods to transform polychalcogenophene backbones or side chains in ways that are unobtainable by direct polymerization. Finally, the major challenges and future outlook in this field are presented.

Hierarchical ordering and multilayer structure of poly(ε-caprolactone) end-functionalized by a liquid crystalline unit: role of polymer crystallization

Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Conjugated Block Copolymers

In the past two decades, conjugated polymers (CPs) have drawn great attention due to their excellent conductivity and charge mobility, rendering them broad applications in organic electronics. Controlling over the morphologies and nanostructures of CPs is very important to improve the performance of CP-based devices, which is still a tremendously difficult task. Conjugated block copolymers (cBCPs), composed of different CP blocks or CP coupled with coiled polymeric blocks, not only maintain the advantages of high conductivity and mobility but also demonstrate features of morphological versatility and tunability. Due to the strong π-π interaction and crystallinity of the conjugated backbones, the self-assembly behaviors of cBCPs are very complicated and largely remain to be explored. In this tutorial review, we first summarize the general synthetic methods for different types of cBCPs. Then, recent studies on the self-assembly behaviors of cBCPs are discussed, with an emphasis on the structural factors that affect the morphologies of cBCPs both in bulk and thin film states. Finally, we briefly provide our outlook on the future research of the self-assembly of cBCPs.

Solution-State Long-Range Molecular Ordering in Poly(3-hexylthiophene)

A blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly(n-hexyl isocyanate-block-2-vinylpyridine) (PHIC-b-P2VP) in a common solvent shows the formation of long-range (micrometer-scale) nanowires of P3HT through hydrophobic interactions between the hexyl arms of P3HT and PHIC in a parallel way, which increase the planarity that leads to the generation of vibration bands with a lower free exciton bandwidth (W = 67 meV) in the solution state, which is further decreased to 9 meV after 48 h annealing of the blend film. The resulting nanowires of the P3HT show a 100-fold increase in current in comparison to pristine P3HT.

Rapid solvo-microwave annealing for optimizing ordered nanostructures and crystallization of regioregular polythiophene-based block copolymers

Solvo-microwave annealing is an effective method for producing thin films of polythiophene-based block copolymers with ordered structures and high crystallinity in a very short processing time (∼3 min).

Synthesis and crystallization behavior of regioregular-block-regiorandom poly(3-hexylthiophene) copolymers

Regioregular–regiorandom poly(3-hexylthiophene) copolymers, synthesized by chain-transfer polycondensation, show strong crystallinity due to their one-sided distribution of regiodefects.
