How Necklace Pearls Evolve in Hydrophobic Polyelectrolyte Chains under Good Solvent Addition: A SANS Study of the Conformation

Dilute polyelectrolyte solutions: recent progress and open questions

Polyelectrolytes are a class of polymers possessing ionic groups on their repeating units. Since counterions can dissociate from the polymer backbone, polyelectrolyte chains are strongly influenced by electrostatic interactions. As a result, the physical properties of polyelectrolyte solutions are significantly different from those of electrically neutral polymers. The aim of this article is to highlight key results and some outstanding questions in the polyelectrolyte research from recent literature. We focus on the influence of electrostatics on conformational and hydrodynamic properties of polyelectrolyte chains. A compilation of experimental results from the literature reveals significant disparities with theoretical predictions. We also discuss a new class of polyelectrolytes called poly(ionic liquid)s that exhibit unique physical properties in comparison to ordinary polyelectrolytes. We conclude this review by listing some key research challenges in order to fully understand the conformation and dynamics of polyelectrolytes in solutions.

Complexation in Aqueous Solution of a Hydrophobic Polyanion (PSSNa) Bearing Different Charge Densities with a Hydrophilic Polycation (PDADMAC)

In this work the electrostatic complexation of two strong polyelectrolytes (PEs) was studied, the hydrophilic and positively charged poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and the hydrophobic and negatively charged poly (styrene-co-sodium styrene sulfonate) (P(St-co-SSNa)), which was prepared at different sulfonation rates. The latter is known to adopt a pearl necklace conformation in solution for intermediate sulfonation rates, suggesting that a fraction of the P(St-co-SSNa) charges might be trapped in these hydrophobic domains; thus making them unavailable for complexation. The set of complementary techniques (DLS, zetametry, ITC, binding experiment with a cationic and metachromatic dye) used in this work highlighted that this was not the case and that all anionic charges of P(St-co-SSNa) were in fact available for complexation either with the polycationic PDADMAC or the monocationic o-toluidine blue dye. Only minor differences were observed between these techniques, consistently showing a complexation stoichiometry close to 1:1 at the charge equivalence for the different P(St-co-SSNa) compositions. A key result emphasizing that (i) the strength of the electrostatic interaction overcomes the hydrophobic effect responsible for pearl formation, and (ii) the efficiency of complexation does not depend significantly on differences in charge density between PDADMAC and P(St-co-SSNa), highlighting that PE chains can undergo conformational rearrangements favoring the juxtaposition of segments of opposite charge. Finally, these data have shown that the formation of colloidal PECs, such as PDADMAC and P(St-co-SSNa), occurs in two distinct steps with the formation of small primary complex particles (<50 nm) by pairing of opposite charges (exothermic step) followed by their aggregation within finite-size clusters (endothermic step). This observation is in agreement with the previously described mechanism of PEC particle formation from strongly interacting systems containing a hydrophobic PE.

Hybrid polarizable simulations of a conventional hydrophobic polyelectrolyte. Toward a theoretical tool for green science innovation

Hybrid modeling approaches based on all-atom force fields to handle a solute and coarse-grained models to account for the solvent are promising numerical tools that can be used to understand the properties of large and multi-components solutions and thus to speed up the development of new industrial products that obey the standard of green and sustainable chemistry. Here, we discuss the ability of a full polarizable hybrid approach coupled to a standard molecular dynamics scheme to model the behavior in the aqueous phase and at infinite dilution conditions of a standard hydrophobic polyelectrolyte polymer whose charge is neutralized by explicit counterions. Beyond the standard picture of a polyelectrolyte behavior governed by an interplay between opposite intra-polyelectrolyte and inter-polyelectrolyte/counterion Coulombic effects, our simulations show the key role played by both intra-solute polarization effects and long range solute/solvent electrostatics to stabilize compact globular conformations of that polyelectrolyte. Our full polarizable hybrid modeling approach is thus a new theoretical tool well suited to be used in digital strategies for accelerating innovation for green science, for instance.

Using Molecular Simulations to Understand the Effect of Dodecyl Sulfate on the Calcium-Binding Ability of Polystyrene Sulfonate

We demonstrate the potential to tune the binding of calcium ions with polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) in the presence of dodecyl sulfate (DS). This can aid the design of surfactant-responsive water-softening agents for applications in detergency. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the effect of the concentration of DS ions and the degree of sulfonation on the propensity of calcium ions toward PSS. We observe that the presence of DS ions increases the propensity of calcium ions toward 100% sulfonated PSS. The above phenomenon is due to the hydrophobic attraction between PSS and DS at low DS concentrations and the formation of calcium ion bridges between sulfonate and sulfate groups at moderate to high DS concentrations. We also observe the formation of calcium ion bridges between the sulfonate groups at high DS concentrations. The presence of DS ions also increases the propensity of calcium ions toward 20% sulfonated PSS. This is mainly due to the hydrophobic attraction between PSS and DS ions. The calcium ion bridges between sulfonate and sulfate groups are less prevalent than those of 100% sulfonated PSS. We do not observe calcium ion bridges between sulfonate groups of 20% sulfonated PSS. We use the above-mentioned insights to suggest potential strategies for designing an anionic polyelectrolyte having a suitable calcium-binding ability at a given concentration of the anionic surfactant. Finally, strong PSS-DS affinity is detrimental to the activity of surfactants because less surfactant ions are available for detergency. Our results also indicate the possibility of altering the PSS-DS affinity by changing the degree of sulfonation.
