Solid State NMR Study of Boron Coordination Environments in Silicone Boronate (SiBA) Polymers

Vacuum-Boosting Precise Synthetic Control of Highly Bright Solid-State Carbon Quantum Dots Enables Efficient Light Emitting Diodes

Carbon quantum dots (C-dots) have emerged as efficient fluorescent materials for solid-state lighting devices. However, it is still a challenge to obtain highly bright solid-state C-dots because of the aggregation caused quenching. Compared to the encapsulation of as-prepared C-dots in matrices, one-step preparation of C-dots/matrix complex is a good method to obtain highly bright solid-state C-dots, which is still quite limited. Here, an efficient and controllable vacuum-boosting gradient heating approach is demonstrated for in situ synthesis of a stable and efficient C-dots/matrix complex. The addition of boric acid strongly bonded with urea, promoting the selectivity of the reaction between citric acid and urea. Benefiting from the high reaction selectivity and spatial-confinement growth of C-dots in porous matrices, in situ synthesize C-dots bonded can synthesized dominantly with a crosslinked octa-cyclic compound, biuret and cyanuric acid (triuret). The obtained C-dots/matrix complex exhibited bright green emission with a quantum yield as high as 90% and excellent thermal and photo stability. As a proof-of-concept, the as-prepared C-dots are used for the fabrication of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a color rendering index of 84 and luminous efficiency of 88.14 lm W-1, showing great potential for applications in LEDs.

Solute Stabilization Effects of Nanoparticles Containing Boronic Acids in the Absence of Binding Pairs

Boronic acids are widely used in materials science because of their ability to reversibly bind with diol and catechol moieties through dynamic covalent interactions in a pH- and oxidative-dependent manner. Considerably fewer studies focus on property modulation of boronic acid-based materials in the absence of a biding pair. Herein, we discuss the effects of the boronic acid-containing polymer block length on solute release kinetics from nanoparticles in a stimuli-responsive manner for on-demand delivery. In this study, ABC-type linear amphiphiles of poly(d,l-lactide) and poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) containing a middle block functionalized with 3-aminophenylboronic acid were synthesized by a combination of ring-opening and controlled free radical polymerizations. Nile red-loaded nanoparticles were self-assembled using a multi-inlet vortex mixer in a well-controlled manner. Release was evaluated at pH above and below the pKa of the boronic acid and in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Our results show that release kinetics from nanoparticles incorporating a boronic acid-functionalized interlayer were slower than those without it, and the rate could be modulated according to pH and oxidative conditions. These effects can be attributed to several factors, including the hydrophobicity of the boronic acid block as well as hydrogen bonding interactions existing between locally confined boronic acids. While boronic acids are generally utilized as boronic/boronate esters, their stabilizing effects in the absence of appropriate binding pairs are relevant and should be considered in the design of boronic acid-based technologies.

A Porphyrin-Based Covalent Organic Framework as Metal-Free Visible-LED-Light Photocatalyst for One-Pot Tandem Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation/Knoevenagel Condensation

A porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF), namely Porph-UOZ-COF (UOZ stands for the University of Zabol), has been designed and prepared via the condensation reaction of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (DHPP) with 1,4-benzenediboronic acid (DBBA), under the solvothermal condition. The solid was characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic, and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The resultant multifunctional COF revealed an outstanding performance in catalyzing a one-pot tandem selective benzylic C-H photooxygenation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction in the absence of additives or metals under visible-LED-light irradiation. Notably, the catalytic activity of the COF was superior to individual organic counterparts and the COF was both stable and reusable for four consecutive runs. The present approach illustrates the potential of COFs as promising metal-free (photo) catalysts for the development of tandem reactions.

Polyborosiloxanes (PBS): Evolution of Approaches to the Synthesis and the Prospects of Their Application

The mini-review deals with borosiloxanes as a class of organoelement compounds that comprise Si-O-B bonds, including individual compounds and polymeric structures. The borosiloxanes first synthesized in the 1950s using simple methods demonstrated very unusual properties but were hydrolytically unstable. However, in recent times, synthetic methods have changed significantly, which made it possible to synthesize borosiloxanes that are resistant to external factors, including atmospheric moisture. Borosiloxanes became important due to their unique properties. For example, borosiloxane liquids acquire a thixotropic behavior due to donor-acceptor interchain interactions. In addition, borosiloxanes are used to produce flame-retardant ceramics. An analysis of the literature sources shows that no review has yet been completed on the topic of borosiloxanes. Therefore, we decided that even a brief outlook of this area would be useful for researchers in this and related fields. Thus, the review shows the evolution of the synthesis methods and covers the studies on the properties of these unique molecules, the latest achievements in this field, and the prospects for their application.

Self-Restructuring of Polyhydromethylsiloxanes by the Hydride Transfer Process: A New Approach to the Cross-Linking of Polysiloxanes and to the Fabrication of Thin Polysiloxane Coatings

The branching and cross-linking of siloxane polymers are important processes in silicone technology. A new type of such a process has been developed, which is a self-restructuring of linear polyhydromethylsiloxane (PHMS). This process involves the reorganization of the PHMS to form a highly branched siloxane polymer or finally a cross-linked siloxane network. It occurs through the transfer of a hydride ion between silicon atoms catalyzed by tris(pentafluoromethyl)borane. Its advantage over existing branching and cross-linking reactions is that it runs at room temperature without a low-molecular-weight cross-linker in the absence of water, silanol groups, or other protic compounds and it does not use metal catalysts. The study of this process was carried out in toluene solution. Its course was followed by ¹H NMR, ²⁹Si NMR and FTIR, SEC, and gas chromatography. A general mechanism of this new self-restructuring process supported by quantum calculations is proposed. It has been shown that a linear PHMS self-restructured to a highly branched polymer can serve as a pure methylsiloxane film precursor.
