Rheo-Raman Spectroscopic Study on Uniaxial Deformation Behavior of High-Density Polyethylene Solids with Various Molecular Weight Distributions

Extracting microscopic insight from transient dielectric measurements during large amplitude oscillatory shear

Probing the transient microstructure of soft matter far from equilibrium is an ongoing challenge to understanding material processing. In this work, we investigate inverse worm-like micelles undergoing large amplitude oscillatory shear using time-resolved dielectric spectroscopy. By controlling the Weissenburg number, we compare the non-linear microstructure response of branched and unbranched worm-like micelles and isolate distinct elastic effects that manifest near flow reversal. We validate our dielectric measurements with small angle neutron scattering and employ sequence of physical processes to disentangle the elastic and viscous contributions of the stress.

One Reagent with Two Functions: Simultaneous Living Radical Polymerization and Chain-End Substitution for Tailoring Polymer Dispersity

The molecular weight distribution of polymer, termed dispersity (Đ), is a fundamental parameter that determines polymer properties. Sodium azide (NaN₃) functions as a catalyst in organocatalyzed living radical polymerization when the reaction medium is nonpolar. In contrast, NaN₃ can act as a nucleophile when the reaction medium is polar. In this paper, we report an efficient approach to dispersity control by exploiting the dual functions of NaN₃ under the varied solvent polarity. Simultaneous polymerization and chain-end substitution allowed us to tune the Đ values of various polymethacrylates and poly(butyl acrylate). Notably, the Đ value could be tuned to a wide range approximately from 1.2 to 2.0 for polymethacrylates and to 3.8 for poly(butyl acrylate). This approach afforded polymer brushes on surfaces with tailored Đ values. An interesting finding was that the polymer brushes exhibited a unique interaction with external molecules, depending on the Đ value.

Visualization of the Necking Initiation and Propagation Processes during Uniaxial Tensile Deformation of Crystalline Polymer Films via the Generation of Fluorescent Radicals

To visualize and simultaneously quantify the necking behavior of crystalline polymer films during uniaxial stretching, tetraarylsuccinonitrile (TASN) moieties were introduced into polymers at the center of the main chain. TASN can produce a relatively stable radical that emits yellow fluorescence in response to mechanical stress. During the uniaxial elongation test of the TASN-centered crystalline polymers, the yellow fluorescence derived from the dissociated TASN radicals was used for microscale observations that showed the orientation of the polymer chains in the stretching direction. Furthermore, by comparing the radical generation in linear and star-shaped TASN-centered crystalline polymers during their tensile deformation, we found that the TASN dissociation ratio is higher in the star-shaped polymer, which has more chains connected to the lamellar crystal. Thus, the microforces generated in the amorphous region during uniaxial stretching were probed via the use of TASN, which allowed a direct visualization of the necking initiation and propagation processes as well as a quantification via electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Clarification of the effects of topological isomers on the mechanical strength of comb polyurethane

We demonstrated the mechanical enhancement behavior of the comb polyurethanes by the topological isomer system between the linear and comb polyurethane. Also, we assumed the mechanical enhancement mechanism by the rheological properties.

In situ Raman Spectroscopic Observation of Polymer Chains in Semi-Crystalline Polyethylene Solids

In situ Raman spectroscopy is applied for polyethylene solid under various environments to elucidate the morphological and conformational changes. The trans conformation retains up to higher temperature for high-density polyethylene, reflecting higher stability of the orthorhombic crystals composed of stacked trans chains. It is suggested that the conversion of the non-crystalline trans chains to the crystalline phase is the microscopic origin of thermal history in the crystallinity, whereas the transformation between the trans and gauche conformers is practically in thermal equilibrium. Microscopic and dynamic mechanism of deformation during uniaxial stretching is investigated for the molecular orientation and the microscopic load sharing on the crystalline and amorphous chains. Lower crystallinity results in smoother and higher orientation toward the stretching direction, as well as higher load on the amorphous chains, during tensile elongation.
