Role of Local Polymer Conformations on the Diverging Glass Transition Temperatures and Dynamic Fragilities of Isotactic-, Syndiotactic-, and Atactic-Poly(methyl methacrylate)s

Aggregation States and Segmental Dynamics of Poly(methyl methacrylate) in Nanofiber Mats

Nanofiber mats composed of polymers, having a large surface-to-volume ratio and high porosity, have been widely applied in the environmental and biomedical fields but fundamental knowledge on the polymer chains in the mats seems to be limited. We here report the aggregation states and segmental dynamics of poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMAs) with different stereoregularities in electrospun nanofiber mats. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR/FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that, in the case of atactic PMMA (at-PMMA), the population of the trans-trans conformation of the main chain part, which allows carbonyl groups of the side group to interact affirmatively with each other, increased in the electrospun nanofiber mat. On the other hand, in the case of isotactic PMMA (it-PMMA), the skeletal conformation was unchanged even in the nanofiber mat. As a result of the aggregation states of PMMA chains, the glass-transition temperature (T_g) of the electrospun nanofiber mats increased and remained unchanged from the corresponding bulk value for at- and it-PMMA, respectively. These findings should be useful for designing materials and devices composed of electrospun nanofibers.

Unraveling Sequence Effect on Glass Transition Temperatures of Discrete Unconjugated Oligomers

Sequence plays a critical role in enabling unique properties and functions of natural biomolecules, which has promoted the rapid advancement of synthetic sequence-defined polymers in recent decades. Particularly, investigation of short chain sequence-defined oligomers (also called discrete oligomers) on their properties has become a hot topic. However, most studies have focused on discrete oligomers with conjugated structures. In contrast, unconjugated oligomers remain relatively underexplored. In this study, three pairs of discrete oligomers with the same composition but different sequence for each pair are employed for investigating their glass transition temperatures (T_g s). The resultant T_g s of sequenced oligomers in each pair are found to be significantly different (up to 11.6 °C), attributable to variations in molecular packing as demonstrated by molecular dynamics and density function theory simulations. Intermolecular interaction is demonstrated to have less impact on T_g s than intramolecular interaction. The mechanistic investigation into two model dimers suggests that monomer sequence caused the difference in intramolecular rotational flexibility of the sequenced oligomers. In addition, despite having different monomer sequence and T_g s, the oligomers have very similar solubility parameters, which supports their potential use as effective oligomeric plasticizers to tune the T_g s of bulk polymer materials.

Thin-film composite membrane breaking the trade-off between conductivity and selectivity for a flow battery

A membrane with both high ion conductivity and selectivity is critical to high power density and low-cost flow batteries, which are of great importance for the wide application of renewable energies. The trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity is a bottleneck of ion conductive membranes. In this paper, a thin-film composite membrane with ultrathin polyamide selective layer is found to break the trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity, and dramatically improve the power density of a flow battery. As a result, a vanadium flow battery with a thin-film composite membrane achieves energy efficiency higher than 80% at a current density of 260 mA cm⁻², which is the highest ever reported to the best of our knowledge. Combining experiments and theoretical calculation, we propose that the high performance is attributed to the proton transfer via Grotthuss mechanism and Vehicle mechanism in sub-1 nm pores of the ultrathin polyamide selective layer.

Low-cost flow batteries with high power density are promising for energy storage, but membranes with simultaneously high ion conductivity and selectivity should be developed. Here the authors report a thin-film composite membrane that breaks the trade-off between ion conductivity and selectivity.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Swelling of Poly(methyl methacrylate) in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

The swelling of a poly (methyl methacrylate) in supercritical carbon dioxide was studied by means of full atomistic classical molecular dynamics simulation. In order to characterize the polymer swelling, we calculated various properties related to the density, structure, and dynamics of polymer chains as a function of the simulation time, temperature, and pressure. In addition, we compared the properties of the macromolecular chains in supercritical CO₂ with the properties of the corresponding bulk system at the same temperature and atmospheric pressure. It was shown that diffusion of CO₂ molecules into the polymer led to a significant increase in the chain mobility and distances between them. Analysis of diffusion coefficients of CO₂ molecules inside and outside the poly(methyl methacrylate) sample has shown that carbon dioxide actively interacts with the functional groups of poly (methyl methacrylate). Joint analysis of the radial distribution functions obtained from classical molecular dynamics and of the averaging interatomic distances from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics allows us to make a conclusion about the possibility of formation of weak hydrogen bonds between the carbon dioxide oxygen atom and the hydrogen atoms of the polymer methyl groups.
