Isomorphic Polyoxyalkylene Copolyethers Obtained by Copolymerization of Aliphatic Diols

Linearly-Changed Thermal Behavior and Depressed Brill Transition in Long-Chain Polyamides Substituted by Methyl Side Groups

Side substitution is an effective way of functionalizing and modifying the properties of polyamides. Meanwhile, side substitution would significantly influence the crystallization kinetics and polymorphic phase transition of polyamides, which, however, has not been well elucidated. Herein, we synthesized the side-substituted long-chain polyamides with various content of methyl pendent groups and investigated their crystallization and phase transition behaviors. We find that the thermal parameters of side-substituted polyamides vary linearly with the side group content, analogous to the isomorphic crystallization of random copolymers. All the solution-crystallized polyamides experience the α-γ Brill transition during heating, with the Brill transition temperature linearly decreasing as the side group content increases. Intriguingly, the γ-α transition of polyamides during cooling is suppressed with the presence of side methyl groups due to the difficulty in H-bond reorganization and gauche-trans conformational changes. This work has demonstrated the critical role of side substitution in the polymorphic crystallization and phase transition of long-chain polyamides.

Cyclic and Linear Tetrablock Copolymers Synthesized at Speed and Scale by Lewis Pair Polymerization of a One-Pot (Meth)acrylic Mixture and Characterized at Multiple Levels

Cyclic block copolymers (cBCP) are fundamentally intriguing materials, but their synthetic challenges that demand precision in controlling both the monomer sequence and polymer topology limit access to AB and ABC block architectures. Here, we show that cyclic ABAB tetra-BCPs (cABAB) and their linear counterpart (lABAB) can be readily obtained at a speed and scale from one-pot (meth)acrylic monomer mixtures, through coupling the Lewis pair polymerization's unique compounded-sequence control with its precision in topology control. This approach achieves fast (<15 min) and quantitative (>99%) conversion to tetra-BCPs of predesignated linear or cyclic topology at scale (40 g) in a one-pot procedure, precluding the needs for repeated chain extensions, stoichiometric addition steps, dilute conditions, and postsynthetic modifications, and/or postsynthetic ring-closure steps. The resulting lABAB and cABAB have essentially identical molecular weights (Mn = 165-168 kg mol-1) and block degrees/symmetry, allowing for direct behavioral comparisons in solution (hydrodynamic volume, intrinsic viscosity, elution time, and refractive indices), bulk (thermal transitions), and film (thermomechanical and rheometric properties and X-ray scattering patterns) states. To further the morphological characterizations, allylic side-chain functionality is exploited via the thiol-ene click chemistry to install crystalline octadecane side chains and promote phase separation between the A and B blocks, allowing visualization of microdomain formation.

Synthesis, Structure, Crystallization and Mechanical Properties of Isodimorphic PBS-ran-PCL Copolyesters

Isodimorphic behavior is determined by partial inclusion of comonomer segments within the crystalline structure and arises from the comparatively similar repeating chain units of the parental homopolymers. Isodimorphic random copolymers are able to crystallize irrespective of their composition and exhibit a pseudo-eutectic behavior when their melting point values are plotted as a function of comonomer content. At the pseudo-eutectic point or region, two crystalline phases can coexist. On the right-hand and the left-hand side of the pseudo-eutectic point or region, only one single crystalline phase can form which is very similar to the crystalline structures of the parent homopolymers. This article aims to study the synthesis method, structure, crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of isodimorphic random PBS-ran-PCL copolyesters. Moreover, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of our main recent results on PBS-ran-PCL random copolyesters with three different molecular weights. The results show that the comonomer composition and crystallization conditions are the major factors responsible for the crystalline morphology, crystallization kinetics and mechanical performance of isodimorphic random copolyesters. Our studies demonstrate that in the pseudo-eutectic region, where both crystalline phases can coexist, the crystallization conditions determine the crystalline phase or phases of the copolymer. The relationships between the comonomer composition and mechanical properties are also addressed in this work.

Polyether Single and Double Crystalline Blends and the Effect of Lithium Salt on Their Crystallinity and Ionic Conductivity

In this work, blends of Poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, and poly(1,6-hexanediol), PHD, were prepared in a wide composition range. They were examined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Polarized Light Optical Microscopy (PLOM) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). Based on the results obtained, the blends were partially miscible in the melt and their crystallization was a function of miscibility and composition. Crystallization triggered phase separation. In blends with higher PEO contents both phases were able to crystallize due to the limited miscibility in this composition range. On the other hand, the blends with higher PHD contents display higher miscibility and therefore, only the PHD phase could crystallize in them. A nucleation effect of the PHD phase on the PEO phase was detected, probably caused by a transference of impurities mechanism. Since PEO is widely used as electrolyte in lithium batteries, the PEO/PHD blends were studied with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI), and the effect of Li-salt concentration was studied. We found that the lithium salt preferentially dissolves in the PEO phase without significantly affecting the PHD component. While the Li-salt reduced the spherulite growth rate of the PEO phase within the blends, the overall crystallization rate was enhanced because of the strong nucleating effect of the PHD component. The ionic conductivity was also determined for the blends with Li-salt. At high temperatures (>70 °C), the conductivity is in the order of ~10⁻³ S cm⁻¹, and as the temperature decreases, the crystallization of PHD was detected. This improved the self-standing character of the blend films at high temperatures as compared to the one of neat PEO.

Stereoretention in the Bulk ROP of l-Lactide Guided by a Thermally Stable Organocatalyst

Polylactide (PLA) has emerged as one of the most promising bio-based alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, mainly because it can be produced from the fermentation of naturally occurring sugars and because it can be industrially compostable. In spite of these benefits, the industrial ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (L-LA) still requires the use of highly active and thermally stable metal-based catalysts, which have raised some environmental concerns. While the excellent balance between activity and functional group compatibility of organic acid catalysts makes them some of the most suitable catalysts for the metal-free ROP of L-LA, the majority of these acids are highly volatile and subject to decomposition at high temperature, which limits their use under industrially relevant conditions. In this work we exploit the use of a nonstoichiometric acid–base organocatalyst to promote the solvent-free and metal-free ROP of L-LA at elevated temperatures in the absence of epimerization and transesterification. To do so, a stable acidic complex was prepared by mixing 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) with 2 equiv of methanesulfonic acid (MSA). Both experimental and computational results indicate that DMAP:MSA (1:2) not only is highly thermally stable but also promotes the retention of stereoregularity during the polymerization of L-LA, leading to PLLA with a molar mass of up to 40 kg mol^–1 and a chiral purity in excess of 98%. This result provides a new feature to exploit in organocatalyzed polymerization and in the design of new catalysts to facilitate the path to market.

Effect of the Crystallization Conditions on the Exclusion/Inclusion Balance in Biodegradable Poly(butylene succinate-ran-butylene adipate) Copolymers

Biomedical applications of polymers require precise control of the solid-state structure, which is of particular interest for biodegradable copolymers. In this work, we evaluated the influence of crystallization conditions on the comonomer exclusion/inclusion balance of biodegradable poly(butylene succinate-ran-butylene adipate) (PBSA) isodimorphic random copolymers. Regardless of the crystallization conditions, the copolymers retain their isodimorphic character, displaying a pseudo-eutectic behavior with crystallization in the entire composition range. This illustrates the thermodynamic nature of the isodimorphic behavior for PBSA random copolymers. However, depending on the composition, the crystallization conditions affect the exclusion/inclusion balance of the comonomers. Fast cooling favors butylene adipate (BA) inclusion inside the poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) crystals, whereas isothermal crystallization strongly limits it. PBA-rich compositions behave differently. Both fast and slow crystallization formed the β-phase, whereas BS unit inclusion is favored independently of the cooling conditions. During successive self-nucleation and annealing, the BA inclusion is intermediate between non-isothermal and isothermal conditions, while the crystalline structure of the PBA phase changes from the β-phase to the more stable α-phase. We propose a simple crystallographic model to explain the changes in the unit cell dimension of the copolymers.

Dual Organocatalysts Based on Ionic Mixtures of Acids and Bases: A Step Toward High Temperature Polymerizations

Organocatalysis provides a powerful alternative in many polymerization reactions and nowadays has become a valuable tool for polymer chemists. The key reason for transitioning to organocatalysts is not only their ability to be effectively removed from resultant products, but also, their potential to exquisitely control the catalytic activity and selectivity of the polymerization processes. While organocatalysis has been largely implemented in research laboratories, its use in industrial bulk polymerization processes is still scarce. This is mostly due to the poor thermal stability of organocatalysts at temperatures (150-250 °C) usually employed for industrial polymerizations. In this Viewpoint, we highlight the recent advances of the use of acid-base ionic mixtures in high temperatures bulk polymerization reactions. First, we will focus on the synthesis, characterization, difunctional catalytic properties, and thermal stability of these acid-base mixtures. Afterward, we will emphasize the recent literature describing their use in chain growth and step-growth polymerizations. Moreover, the highlight will also draw attention to recent efforts in the use of these acid-base mixtures in polymer recycling by means of depolymerization.

Preparation of a mimetic and degradable poly(ethylene glycol) by a non-eutectic mixture of organocatalysts (NEMO) via a one-pot two-step process

A one-pot, two-step method for the preparation of degradable PEG is here presented. The full process addresses the requirements imposed by green chemistry and involves the use of a single and nontoxic non-eutectic mixture of organocatalysts. The strategy relies on the polycondensation of PEG800 after its functionalization by bio-derived 5-membered γ-butyrolactone.

A one-pot, two-step method for the preparation of degradable PEG is here presented.
