Shear Flow Behavior of Bidisperse Rodlike Colloids

Enhancing the dielectric and thermal properties of polytetrafluoroethylene-based composites through designing and constructing a novel interfacial structure

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is widely used as a fundamental core material for high-frequency and high-speed signal transmission fields due to its excellent dielectric properties. However, the high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) characteristic of PTFE severely limits its practical application. The CTE of PTFE can be reduced by filling with SiO2, which is always accompanied by a rapid deterioration of dielectric properties due to the poor interfacial compatibility between SiO2 and PTFE matrix. In this paper, the challenge of synergistic regulation of dielectric and CTE properties for PTFE-based composites is overcome by constructing an interfacial structure with physical interactions. Micro-mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2) is prepared and introduced as a filler, compared with smooth surface SiO2 (sSiO2), the presence of micro-mesoporous in mSiO2 allows PTFE molecular chains to be adsorbed on the surface or in the pore channels of mSiO2, which improves the interfacial combination of the mSiO2/PTFE composites through the physical interaction between mSiO2 and PTFE. The results show that mSiO2/PTFE composite exhibits a lower CTE (58 ppm °C-1) while maintaining a lower dielectric constant (εr, 2.29, 30 GHz) with dielectric loss (tan δ, 2.31 × 10-3, 30 GHz) at a filler addition of 30 vol%, as compared with that of the sSiO2/PTFE composites. This work provides a new strategy for fabricating PTFE-based composites with low CTE as well as low εr and tan δ.

Rheology of bi-disperse dense fiber suspensions

While significant progress has been made in the modeling and simulation of uniform fiber suspensions, no existing model has been validated for industrially-relevant concentrated suspensions containing fibers of multiple aspect ratios. In the present work, we investigate bi-disperse suspensions with two fiber populations in varying aspect ratios in a steady shear flow using direct numerical simulations. Moreover, we measure the suspension viscosity by creating a controlled length bidispersity for nylon fibers suspended in a Newtonian fluid. The results showed good agreement between the experimentally measured and numerically predicted viscosity for bi-disperse suspensions. The ratio between the aspect ratio of large to small fibers (size ratio) and the volume fraction of large fibers (composition) in bi-disperse systems strongly affected the rheological behavior of the suspension. The increment of relative viscosity associated with size ratio and composition can be explained by the decrease in the maximum flowable limit or jamming volume fraction. Moreover, the relative viscosity of bi-disperse suspensions collapses, when plotted against the reduced volume fraction, demonstrating the controlling influence of the jamming fraction in bi-disperse fiber suspensions.

Alignment-Rheology Relationship of Biosourced Rod-Like Colloids and Polymers under Flow

Fluids composed of biosourced rod-like colloids (RC) and rod-like polymers (RP) have been extensively studied due to various promising applications relying on their flow-induced orientation (e.g., fiber spinning). However, the relationship between RC and RP alignment and the resulting rheological properties is unclear due to experimental challenges. We investigate the alignment-rheology relationship for a variety of biosourced RC and RP, including cellulose-based particles, filamentous viruses, and xanthan gum, by simultaneous measurements of the shear viscosity and fluid anisotropy under rheometric shear flows. For each system, the RC and RP contribution to the fluid viscosity, captured by the specific viscosity η_sp, follows a universal trend with the extent of the RC and RP alignment independent of concentration. We further exploit this unique rheological-structural link to retrieve a dimensionless parameter (β) directly proportional to η_sp at zero shear rate (η_0,sp), a parameter often difficult to access from experimental rheometry for RC and RP with relatively long contour lengths. Our results highlight the unique link between the flow-induced structural and rheological changes occurring in RC and RP fluids. We envision that our findings will be relevant in building and testing microstructural constitutive models to predict the flow-induced structural and rheological evolution of fluids containing RC and RP.

Naturally derived colloidal rods in microfluidic flows

Naturally derived colloidal rods (CR) are promising building blocks for developing sustainable soft materials. Engineering new materials based on naturally derived CR requires an in-depth understanding of the structural dynamics and self-assembly of CR in dispersion under processing conditions. With the advancement of microfabrication techniques, many microfluidic platforms have been employed to study the structural dynamics of CR under flow. However, each microfluidic design has its pros and cons which need careful evaluation in order to fully meet the experimental goal and correctly interpret the data. We analyze recent results obtained from naturally derived CR and relevant rod-like macromolecules under microfluidic flows, with emphasis on the dynamical behavior in shear- and extensional-dominated flows. We highlight the key concepts required in order to assess and evaluate the results obtained from different CR and microfluidic platforms as a whole and to aid interconnections with neighboring fields. Finally, we identify and discuss areas of interest for future research directions.

Magnetorheological Fluids with Surface-Modified Iron Oxide Magnetic Particles with Controlled Size and Shape

This study is focused on surface-modified Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles with precisely controlled sizes and shapes applied in magnetorheological (MR) fluids. After the preparation of the monodisperse spindle-shaped and cubic Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles, surface modification with dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTM) was carried out via a silane coupling reaction to increase the dispersion stability of the particles. Afterward, MR fluids were prepared by mixing the DTM-modified Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles with silicon oil. Transmission electron microscopy observations demonstrated that spindle-shaped Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles could form a more stable chain-like structure than cubic Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles upon application of an external magnetic field. The rheological measurements of MR fluids also indicated that the surface modification with DTM, the introduction of anisotropic shapes, and the increase in the particle size all played positive roles in the improvement in MR properties.
