Abstract
We study the molecular origin of a prepeak (PP) observed at low q values in the structure factors of three oligomers in a bulk (poly(mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane, PMMS, poly(methylmercaptopropyl)-grafted-hexylmethacrylate, PMMS-g-HMA, and poly(methylphenyl)siloxane, PMPS) in order to understand the lowering of the PP intensity detected for oligomers confined in cylindrical pores with low diameter. For this purpose, we use a combination of X-ray diffraction measurements and coarse-grained bead-spring molecular dynamics simulations. Our molecular modelling demonstrated that the planarity of the pendant groups triggers the self-association of oligomers into nanoaggregates. However, the formation of oligomeric nanodomains is not sufficient for building-up the PP. The latter requires spatial disturbance in the arrangement of the side groups of oligomers within clusters. Importantly, our numerical analysis revealed that the increasing degree of the confinement of oligomers limits their aggregation and consequently lowers the amplitude of the PP observed in the experimental data.

Abstract
This report studied the changes in the slow dynamics of polyacrylate by adding a hindered phenol (CA) capable of forming three intermolecular hydrogen bonds (inter-HBs) per molecule with the polymer chain. The CA molecule apparently diminishes the slow modes (with lower peak temperatures and peak heights) of the polyacrylate, although it has a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) than the acrylic matrix, and the rigid CA-bridged HB network significantly amplifies the α-relaxation near Tg (with higher peak temperatures and peak heights). Consequently, the mixtures exhibit a diminishing slow mode that gradually merges with the prominent α-peak with increasing CA loadings. The anomalous dynamics concerning the opposite behaviors of the slow mode and α-relaxation was further rationalized in terms of dissociation of inter-HBs when the temperature is higher than Tg, together with the small molecule-alleviated macromolecular connectivity. This work provides essential insights into the slow dynamics of such HB-driven hybrids, and paves the way for tailoring the viscous flow properties of the hybrid material from a molecular level perspective.

Abstract
Functionality of amorphous multicomponent systems largely depends upon the miscibility among components, especially in systems such as amorphous drugs and electrolytes. An in-depth understanding of mixing behaviors of various constituents is necessitated. Here, we applied the small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) technique to monitor the mixing behaviors in three typical glass-forming binary systems imposed by varied heat of mixing. It is found that the Porod invariant (Q) determined at the glass transition temperature is remarkably enhanced as the concentration fluctuation becomes intensified. Meanwhile, the deviation of Q from the ideal mixing law is markedly weaken at elevated temperatures. The results unambiguously suggest that the degree of concentration fluctuations in mixing systems can be accurately quantified by the structural property, allowing the link to mixing thermodynamics.

Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), as the benchmark of organophilic membrane materials, still faces challenges for removal of aromatic compounds due to the undesirable transport channels. In this work, we propose to reconstruct the PDMS conformation with tunable side group mobility by introducing phenyl as rigid molecular spacer to relieve steric hindrance of large-sized aromatic molecules; meanwhile, polymer segments are loosely stacked to provide additional degrees of freedom as increasing the permeant size. Moreover, the reconstructed PDMS is engineered into the composite membrane with prevention of condensation of aromatic compounds in the substrate pores. The resulting thin-film composite membrane achieved one order of magnitude higher flux (11.8 kg m-2 h-1 ) with an equivalent separation factor (12.3) compared with the state-of-the-art membranes for aromatic removal. The permeant-customized membrane molecular and microstructure designing strategy opens a new avenue to develop membranes for specific separation targets.

Abstract
We examined the behavior of poly(mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane (PMMS), characterized by a polymer chain backbone of alternate silicon and oxygen atoms substituted by a polar pendant group able to form hydrogen bonds (-SH moiety), by means of infrared (FTIR) and dielectric (BDS) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and rheology. We observed that the examined PMMS forms relatively efficient hydrogen bonds leading to the association of chains in the form of ordered lamellar-like hydrogen-bonded nanodomains. Moreover, the recorded mechanical and dielectric spectra revealed the presence of two relaxation processes. A direct comparison of collected data and relaxation times extracted from two experimental techniques, BDS and rheology, indicates that they monitor different types of the mobility of PMMS macromolecules. Our mechanical measurements revealed the presence of Rouse modes connected to the chain dynamics (slow process) and segmental relaxation (a faster process), whereas in the dielectric loss spectra we observed two relaxation processes related most likely to either the association-dissociation phenomenon within lamellar-like self-assemblies or the sub-Rouse mode (α'-slower process) and segmental (α-faster process) dynamics. Data presented herein allow a better understanding of the peculiar dynamical properties of polysiloxanes and associating polymers having strongly polar pendant moieties.

Abstract
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are combined to study the effect of changes in the surface chemistry on the segmental dynamics of glass-forming polymer, poly(methylphenylsiloxane) (PMPS), confined in anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) nanopores. Measurements were carried for native and silanized nanopores of the same pore sizes. Nanopore surfaces are modified with the use of two silanizing agents, chlorotrimethylsilane (ClTMS) and (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMOS), of much different properties. The results of the dielectric studies have demonstrated that for the studied polymer located in 55 nm pores, changes in the surface chemistry and thermal treatment allows the confinement effect seen in temperature evolution of the segmental relaxation time, τα(T) to be removed. The bulk-like evolution of the segmental relaxation time can also be restored upon long-time annealing. Interestingly, the time scale of such equilibration process was found to be independent of the surface conditions. The calorimetric measurements reveal the presence of two glass-transition events in DSC thermograms of all considered systems, implying that the changes in the interfacial interactions introduced by silanization are not strong enough to inhibit the formation of the interfacial layer. Although DSC traces confirmed the two-glass-transition scenario, there is no clear evidence that vitrification of the interfacial layer affects τα(T) for nanopore-confined polymer.
