Designing a Nanoscale Three-phase Electrochemical Pathway to Promote Pt-catalyzed Formaldehyde Oxidation

Low Loading and High Activity of Platinum Oxide Nanoclusters Formed by Defect Engineering of a Metal-Organic Framework for Formaldehyde Degradation

A distinct platinum oxide nanocluster (PtO_x ) was developed, consisting of only Pt-O bond by a defect-engineered Al metal-organic framework (MOF) (BIT-72) with superior formaldehyde (HCHO) degradation activity and stability. With only 0.015 wt % Pt loading, PtO_x @BIT-72-DE could degrade HCHO with 100 % conversion continuously for at least 200 h under HCHO concentration of 25 ppm and gas hourly space velocity of 60000 mL g^-1  h^-1 at room temperature. Furthermore, its specific rate (446 mmol_HCHO  g_Pt ^-1  h^-1 ) was higher than for traditional Pt-based catalysts and single-atom Pt catalysts. Moreover, the cost of PtO_x @BIT-72-DE was lowered to 0.0769 $ g^-1 , which could significantly facilitate its commercial application. This study demonstrates the promising potential of MOFs in the design of HCHO degradation catalysts.

Electro-Synthesis of Organic Compounds with Heterogeneous Catalysis

Electro-organic synthesis has attracted a lot of attention in pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, and future industrial applications in energy storage and conversion. To date, there has not been a detailed review on electro-organic synthesis with the strategy of heterogeneous catalysis. In this review, the most recent advances in synthesizing value-added chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis are summarized. An overview of electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes as well as paired electrocatalysis is provided, and the anodic oxidation of alcohols (monohydric and polyhydric), aldehydes, and amines are discussed. This review also provides in-depth insight into the cathodic reduction of carboxylates, carbon dioxide, CC, C≡C, and reductive coupling reactions. Moreover, the electrocatalytic paired electro-synthesis methods, including parallel paired, sequential divergent paired, and convergent paired electrolysis, are summarized. Additionally, the strategies developed to achieve high electrosynthesis efficiency and the associated challenges are also addressed. It is believed that electro-organic synthesis is a promising direction of organic electrochemistry, offering numerous opportunities to develop new organic reaction methods.

Methylene blue applied to N95 respirators and medical masks for SARS-CoV-2 decontamination: What is the likelihood of inhaling methylene blue?

Background

Global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), as consequence of the COVID-19 global pandemic, has unmasked significant resource inequities prompting efforts to develop methods for safe PPE decontamination for reuse. The World Health Organization (WHO) in their Rational Use of PPE bulletin cited the use of a photodynamic dye, methylene blue, and light exposure as a viable option for N95 respirator decontamination. Because WHO noted that methylene blue (MB) would be applied to surfaces through which health care workers breathe, we hypothesized that little to no MB will be detectable by spectroscopy when the PPE is subjected to MB at supraphysiologic airflow rates.

Methods

A panel of N95 respirators, medical masks, and cloth masks were sprayed with 5 cycles of 1,000 uM MB solution. Mask coupons were subjected to the equivalent of 120 L/min of 100% humidified air flow. Effluent gas was trapped in an aqueous solution and the resultant fluid was sampled for MB absorbance with a level of detection of 0.004 mg/m3.

Results

No detectable MB was identified for any mask using Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy.

Conclusions

At 500-fold the amount of MB applied to N95 respirators and medical masks as were used for the decontamination study cited in the WHO Rational Use of PPE bulletin, no detectable MB was observed, thus providing safety evidence for the use of methylene blue and light exposure for mask decontamination.

Nanoemulsion-Coated Ni-Fe Hydroxide Self-Supported Electrode as an Air-Breathing Cathode for High-Performance Zinc-Air Batteries

To improve the energy conversion efficiency and durability of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) for large-scale implementations, here we propose an "air-breathing" strategy to significantly enlarge triple-interfaces with intensified mass transfer. By dip-coating the aerophilic perfluorochemical compounds (PFC) and amphiphilic ionomers into the self-supported electrodes, (1) the high solubility of O₂ in the PFC nanoemulsions greatly increases triple-phase boundaries and facilitates the efficient supply/removal of O₂ from the electrolyte; (2) the ionomers with hydrophobic and hydrophilic functionalities enable fast gas, water, and ion transport to the triple-phase boundaries; and (3) the self-supported electrode without binder ensures fast electron transfer while the firm integration prevents catalyst shedding. By applying this strategy, the ZABs show a high power density of 115 mW cm^-2 and a narrow discharge/charge gap of 0.64 V at 10 mA cm^-2 and a long-cycling durability (over 1000 h). This work provides a universal approach to promote gas-evolving reactions for electrochemical applications.
