Sub-nanometric Manganous Oxide Clusters in Nitrogen Doped Mesoporous Carbon Nanosheets for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Atom-Level Tandem Catalysis in Lithium Metal Batteries

High-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are limited by reaction or diffusion barriers with dissatisfactory electrochemical kinetics. Typical conversion-type lithium sulfur battery systems exemplify the kinetic challenges. Namely, before diffusing or reacting in the electrode surface/interior, the Li(solvent)x + dissociation at the interface to produce isolated Li+, is usually a prerequisite fundamental step either for successive Li+ "reduction" or for Li+ to participate in the sulfur conversions, contributing to the related electrochemical barriers. Thanks to the ideal atomic efficiency (100 at%), single atom catalysts (SACs) have gained attention for use in LMBs toward resolving the issues caused by the five types of barrier-restricted processes, including polysulfide/Li2S conversions, Li(solvent)x + desolvation, and Li0 nucleation/diffusion. In this perspective, the tandem reactions including desolvation and reaction or plating and corresponding catalysis behaviors are introduced and analyzed from interface to electrode interior. Meanwhile, the principal mechanisms of highly efficient SACs in overcoming specific energy barriers to reinforce the catalytic electrochemistry are discussed. Lastly, the future development of high-efficiency atomic-level catalysts in batteries is presented.

2D Nano-Channeled Molybdenum Compounds for Accelerating Interfacial Polysulfides Catalysis in Li-S Battery

The shuttle effect, which causes the loss of active sulfur, passivation of lithium anode, and leads to severe capacity attenuation, is currently the main bottleneck for lithium-sulfur batteries. Recent studies have disclosed that molybdenum compounds possess exceptional advantages as a polar substrate to immobilize and catalyze lithium polysulfide such as high conductivity and strong sulfiphilicity. However, these materials show incomplete contact with sulfur/polysulfides, which causes uneven redox conversion of sulfur and results in poor rate performance. Herein, a new type of 2D nano-channeled molybdenum compounds (2D-MoNx) via the 2D organic-polyoxometalate superstructure for accelerating interfacial polysulfide catalysis toward high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries is reported. The 2D-MoNx shows well-interlinked nano-channels, which increase the reactive interface and contact surface with polysulfides. Therefore, the battery equipped with 2D-MoNx displays a high discharge capacity of 912.7 mAh g-1 at 1 C and the highest capacity retention of 523.7 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles. Even at the rate of 2 C, the capacity retention can be maintained at 526.6 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles. This innovative nano-channel and interfacial design of 2D-MoNx provides new nanostructures to optimize the sulfur redox chemistry and eliminate the shuttle effect of polysulfides.

Modulating Electronic Structures of Iron Clusters through Orbital Rehybridization by Adjacent Single Copper Sites for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

The atom-cluster interaction has recently been exploited as an effective way to increase the performance of metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the rational design of such catalysts and understanding their structure-property correlations remain a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that the introduction of adjacent metal (M)-N4 single atoms (SAs) could significantly improve the ORR performance of a well-screened Fe atomic cluster (AC) catalyst by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental analysis. The DFT studies suggest that the Cu-N4 SAs act as a modulator to assist the O2 adsorption and cleavage of O-O bond on the Fe AC active center, as well as optimize the release of OH* intermediates to accelerate the whole ORR kinetic. The depositing of Fe AC with Cu-N4 SAs on nitrogen doped mesoporous carbon nanosheet are then constructed through a universal interfacial monomicelles assembly strategy. Consistent with theoretical predictions, the resultant catalyst exhibits an outstanding ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.92 eV in alkali and 0.80 eV in acid, as well as a high power density of 214.8 mW cm-2 in zinc air battery. This work provides a novel strategy for precisely tuning the atomically dispersed poly-metallic centers for electrocatalysis.

Nitrogen-Rich WN Clusters with Atomic Disorders and Non-Grain Boundaries Confined in Carbon Nanosheets Boosting Sodium-Ion Storage

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as economic candidates have received considerable attention for large-scale energy storage applications. However, crystalline metal compounds with specific transport routes and rigid structures restrict their practical applications. Herein, the atomically dispersed N-rich amorphous WN clusters confined in the carbon nanosheets (WN/CNSs) are reported. Through advanced tests and calculations, the structural advantages, reaction mechanisms, and kinetic behaviors of the clusters are systematically analyzed. Compared with the crystalline W₂ N with low theoretical capacity (only 209.3 mAh g^-1 ), the amorphous WN clusters have the advantages of atomic disorders and non-grain boundaries and can afford abundant active sites (unsaturated dangling bonds) and isotropic charge transfer channels, which can be further enhanced by the N-rich characteristics and high electronegativity of the clusters. The encapsulation of CNSs has high conductivity and structural stability, which promotes electron transfer and effectively buffers volume expansions. As a SIB anode, the reversible capacity of WN/CNSs reaches 421.2 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 . Even at 20 A g^-1 , the reversible capacity of 170.7 mAh g^-1 is maintained after 8000 cycles. This study focuses on the advantages of amorphous nitrides, which have important guiding significance for the design of atomic clusters for high-performance metal ion batteries.

CrP Nanocatalyst within Porous MOF Architecture to Accelerate Polysulfide Conversion in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries demonstrate great potential for next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems because of their high specific energy and low-cost materials. However, the shuttling behavior and slow kinetics of intermediate polysulfide (PS) conversion pose a major obstacle to the practical application of Li-S batteries. Herein, CrP within a porous nanopolyhedron architecture derived from a metal-organic framework (CrP@MOF) is developed as a highly efficient nanocatalyst and S host to address these issues. Theoretical and experimental analyses demonstrate that CrP@MOF has a remarkable binding strength to trap soluble PS species. In addition, CrP@MOF shows abundant active sites to catalyze the PS conversion, accelerate Li-ion diffusion, and induce the precipitation/decomposition of Li₂S. As a result, the CrP@MOF-containing Li-S batteries demonstrate over 67% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 1 C, ∼100% Coulombic efficiency, and high rate capability (674.6 mAh g^-1 at 4 C). In brief, CrP nanocatalysts accelerate the PS conversion and improve the overall performance of Li-S batteries.

Mesoporous Carbon-Based Materials for Enhancing the Performance of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The most promising energy storage devices are lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), which offer a high theoretical energy density that is five times greater than that of lithium-ion batteries. However, there are still significant barriers to the commercialization of LSBs, and mesoporous carbon-based materials (MCBMs) have attracted much attention in solving LSBs' problems, due to their large specific surface area (SSA), high electrical conductivity, and other unique advantages. The synthesis of MCBMs and their applications in the anodes, cathodes, separators, and "two-in-one" hosts of LSBs are reviewed in this study. Most interestingly, we establish a systematic correlation between the structural characteristics of MCBMs and their electrochemical properties, offering recommendations for improving performance by altering the characteristics. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of LSBs under current policies are also clarified. This review provides ideas for the design of cathodes, anodes, and separators for LSBs, which could have a positive impact on the performance enhancement and commercialization of LSBs. The commercialization of high energy density secondary batteries is of great importance for the achievement of carbon neutrality and to meet the world's expanding energy demand.

Coordinating Interface Polymerization with Micelle Mediated Assembly Towards Two-Dimensional Mesoporous Carbon/CoNi for Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Lithium-sulfur battery has attracted significant attention by virtues of their high theoretical energy density, natural abundance, and environmental friendliness. However, the notorious shuttle effect of polysulfides intermediates severely hinders its practical application. Herein, a novel 2D mesoporous N-doped carbon nanosheet with confined bimetallic CoNi nanoparticles sandwiched graphene (mNC-CoNi@rGO) is successfully fabricated through a coordinating interface polymerization and micelle mediated co-assembly strategy. mNC-CoNi@rGO serves as a robust host material that endows lithium-sulfur batteries with a high reversible capacity of 1115 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles, superior rate capability, and excellent cycling stability with 679.2 mAh g^-1 capacity retention over 700 cycles at 1 C. With sulfur contents of up to 5.0 mg cm^-2 , the area capacity remains to be 5.1 mAh cm^-2 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. The remarkable performance is further resolved via a series of experimental characterizations combined with density functional theory calculations. These results reveal that the ordered mesoporous N-doped carbon-encapsulated graphene framework acts as the ion/electron transport highway with excellent electrical conductivity, while bimetallic CoNi nanoparticles enhance the polysulfides adsorption and catalytic conversion that simultaneously accelerate the multiphase sulfur/polysulfides/sulfides conversion and inhibit the polysulfides shuttle.

Multifunctional Mesoporous Carbonaceous Materials Enable the High Performance of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Focusing on multifunctional mesoporous carbonaceous materials (MCMs) is one of the hot research topics due to increasing demand in the high-energy-density devices of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries (2600 Wh kg^-1). On the premise of applying MCMs as a porous framework to load elemental sulfur, to improve the electronic conductivity of the cathode, and to trap the in situ-formed electrolyte-soluble intermediates of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), the commercialization of MCMs-based energy storage devices still needs to solve solid/solid and solid/liquid interfacial issues such as the chemical anchoring of the electrically insulating active substances, the sluggish redox kinetics of intermediate LiPSs, and so on. Through the permutation of multifunctional MCMs serving as the primary sulfur-loading carrier of the cathode, as the secondary surface-coating layers of the separator, the cathode, and the anode separately, this Perspective highlights research challenges to clarify a comprehensive high-performance mechanism of MCM-based Li-S batteries and provides new chemical insight for potential application purposes.

Self-organization of unimolecular micelles in beam stream for functional mesoporous metal oxide nanofibers

The use of linear amphiphilic block copolymers as templates is an important method for the preparation of mesoporous materials. However, the obtained assemblies are usually sensitive to synthetic conditions, which impedes the preparation of such mesoporous materials in certain environments. Herein, we report a universal strategy applying an amphiphilic multi-arm triblock copolymer in the preparation of mesoporous metal oxide nanofibers (NFs) using one metal oxide (TiO2, ZrO2, WO3, CeO2), or two (TiO2/WO3, TiO2/ZrO2, TiO2/CeO2) and three (TiO2/WO3/CuO) metal oxides as composites. The template consists of modified β-cyclodextrin as the center of the macromolecule which is attached sequentially to a block of polystyrene, poly(acrylic acid), and poly(ethylene oxide). Under electrospinning conditions, stable unimolecular micelles are formed and effectively co-assemble with metal ions to form fibrous nanostructures. As indicated by various characterization methods, the synthesized TiO2 and its derived composite NFs maintain a straight and continuous fibrous structure after calcination, and TiO2 NFs exhibit uniform mesopores of 10.8 nm in diameter and a large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 143.3 m2 g-1. Benefiting from the characteristic structure, still present after modification, Pt-decorated mesoporous TiO2 NFs display excellent ability in the visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline, which is superior to the commercial P25 catalyst. This study reveals a promising strategy for the preparation of fibrous mesoporous metal oxides.

Crystal Surface Engineering Induced Active Hexagonal Co2 P-V2 O3 for Highly Stable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Purposeful control of the highly active crystal planes is an effective strategy to improve the nanocrystalline catalytic activity. Therefore, Co₂ P nanocrystals with high exposure of (211) lattice plane loaded at 2D hexagonal V₂ O₃ nanosheets (H-Co₂ P-V₂ O₃ ) are designed via the control of morphology. After optimization, this H-Co₂ P-V₂ O₃ boosts the redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), which is due to the increase of the Co-active sites by exposing more (211) lattice planes of Co₂ P, and the high adsorption and catalysis characteristic of H-Co₂ P-V₂ O₃ for the conversion of LiPSs into LSBs. In the case of modification separator by H-Co₂ P-V₂ O₃ composite, the battery achieves an outstanding reversibility of 876.9 mAh g^-1 over 500 cycles at 1 C, a superior rate property of 611.5 mAh g^-1 at 8 C, and a long-term cycling performance with a low attenuation of 0.04% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 4 C for LSBs. Impressively, a remarkable areal capacity of 12.38 mAh cm^-2 is retained under the high sulfur loading of 14.5 mg cm^-2 after 100 cycles. It is believed that the crystal surface engineering provides guidance to further improve the electrochemical performance of the LSB field.

Confined Co9S8 nanocrystals into N/S-Co-doped carbon nanofibers as a chainmail-like electrocatalyst for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries with high sulfur loading

Accelerating phase transposition efficiency of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) to L₂S and hampering the solution of LiPSs are the keys to stabilizing lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Hence, the sulfiphilic ultrafine Co₉S₈ nanoparticles embedded lithiophilic N, S co-doping carbon nanofibers (Co₉S₈/NSCNF) are prepared via the dual-template method, which are then used as sulfur host in Li-S batteries. Particularly, the double active sites (Co₉S₈ and N, S) in Co₉S₈/NSCNF are prone to form "Co-S", "Li-O" or "Li-N" bonds, and then simultaneously improving the chemisorption and interface transposition capability of LiPSs. In case of the S@ Co₉S₈/NSCNF composites with high sulfur loading of 89% are employed as cathode, the cell possesses optimized "sulfiphilicity" and "lithiophilicity", which achieves remarkable sulfur electrochemistry, including outstanding reversibility of 816.8mAhg^-1 over 500 cycles at 1.0C, excellent rate property of 742.2mAhg^-1at 5.0C, and long-term cycling with a low attenuation of 0.011% per cycle over 1800 cycles at 3.0C. Impressively, a remarkable areal capacity of 11.51mAhcm^-2 is retained under the sulfur loading of 15.3 mg cm^-2 for 50 cycles. This research will deepen the understanding of the complex LiPSs interface transposition procedure and provide new ideas for the design of new host materials.

Design Rules of a Sulfur Redox Electrocatalyst for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Seeking an electrochemical catalyst to accelerate the liquid-to-solid conversion of soluble lithium polysulfides to insoluble products is crucial to inhibit the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries and thus increase their practical energy density. Mn-based mullite (SmMn₂ O₅ ) is used as a model catalyst for the sulfur redox reaction to show how the design rules involving lattice matching and 3d-orbital selection improve catalyst performance. Theoretical simulation shows that the positions of Mn and O active sites on the (001) surface are a good match with those of Li and S atoms in polysulfides, resulting in their tight anchoring to each other. Fundamentally, dz² and dx² -y² around the Fermi level are found to be crucial for strongly coupling with the p-orbitals of the polysulfides and thus decreasing the redox overpotential. Following the theoretical calculation, SmMn₂ O₅ catalyst is synthesized and used as an interlayer in a Li-S battery. The resulted battery has a high cycling stability over 1500 cycles at 0.5 C and more promisingly a high areal capacity of 7.5 mAh cm^-2 is achieved with a sulfur loading of ≈5.6 mg cm^-2 under the condition of a low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) value ≈4.6 µL mg^-1 .

Coupling of N-Doped Mesoporous Carbon and N-Ti3 C2 in 2D Sandwiched Heterostructure for Enhanced Oxygen Electroreduction

2D heterostructures provide a competitive platform to tailor electrical property through control of layer structure and constituents. However, despite the diverse integration of 2D materials and their application flexibility, tailoring synergistic interlayer interactions between 2D materials that form electronically coupled heterostructures remains a grand challenge. Here, the rational design and optimized synthesis of electronically coupled N-doped mesoporous defective carbon and nitrogen modified titanium carbide (Ti₃ C₂ ) in a 2D sandwiched heterostructure, is reported. First, a F127-polydopamine single-micelle-directed interfacial assembly strategy guarantees the construction of two surrounding mesoporous N-doped carbon monolayers assembled on both sides of Ti₃ C₂ nanosheets. Second, the followed ammonia post-treatment successfully introduces N elements into Ti₃ C₂ structure and more defective sites in N-doped mesoporous carbon. Finally, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and theoretical calculation prove the synergistic coupled electronic effect between N-Ti₃ C₂ and defective N-doped carbon active sites in the 2D sandwiched heterostructure. Compared with the control 2D samples (0.87-0.88 V, 4.90-5.15 mA cm^-2 ), the coupled 2D heterostructure possesses the best onset potential of 0.90 V and limited density current of 5.50 mA cm^-2 . Meanwhile, this catalyst exhibits superior methanol tolerance and cyclic durability. This design philosophy opens up a new thought for tailoring synergistic interlayer interactions between 2D materials.

Constructing Structurally Ordered High-Entropy Alloy Nanoparticles on Nitrogen-Rich Mesoporous Carbon Nanosheets for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction

Recent efforts have observed nanoscaled chemical short-range order in bulk high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Simultaneously inspired with the nanostructuring technology, HEA nanoparticles (NPs) with complete chemical order may be achieved. Herein, structurally ordered HEA (OHEA) NPs are constructed on a novel 2D nitrogen-rich mesoporous carbon sandwich framework (OHEA-mNC) by combining a ligand-assisted interfacial assembly with NH₃ annealing. Characterization results show that the resultant materials possess an ultrathin 2D nanosheet structure with large mesopores (≈10 nm), where structurally ordered HEA NPs with an L1₂ phase are homogeneously dispersed. The atom-resolved chemical analyses explicitly determine the location of each atomic site. When being evaluated for the oxygen reduction reaction, the OHEA-mNC NPs afford a greatly enhanced catalytic performance, including a large half-wave potential (0.90 eV) and a high durability (0.01 V decay after 10 000 cycles) compared with the disordered HEA and commercial Pt/C catalysts. The excellent performance is attributed to the enhanced mass transfer rate, improved electron conductivity, and the presence of the stable chemically ordered HEA phase, as revealed by both the experimental results and theoretical calculation. This study suggests a highly feasible process to achieve structurally ordered HEA NPs with advanced mesoporous function in the electrochemical field.

1T-Phase molybdenum sulfide/cobalt oxide nanopillars hybrid nanostructure coupled with nitrogen-doped carbon thin-film as high efficiency electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution

High efficient and durable catalysts are always needed to lower the kinetic barriers as well as prolong the service life associated with oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a sequential synthetic strategy is considered to prepare a hierarchical nanostructure, in which each component can be configured to achieve their full potential so that endows the resulting nanocatalyst a good overall performance. In order to realize this, well-organized cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) nanopillars are firstly grown onto ultrathin 1T-molybdenum sulfide (1T-MoS₂) to obtain high surface area electrocatalyst, providing electron transfer pathways and structural stability. After that, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) derived carbonization film is further in situ deposited on the surface of nanopillars to generate plentiful active sites, thereby accelerating OER kinetics. Based on the combination of different components, the electron transfer capability, catalytic activity and durability are optimized and fully implemented. The obtained nanocatalyst (defined as 1T-MoS₂/Co₃O₄/CN) exhibits the superior OER catalytic ability with the overpotential of 202 mV and Tafel slope of 57 mV·dec^-1 at 10 mA·cm^-2 in 0.1 M KOH, and good durability with a minor chronoamperometric decay of 9.15 % after 60,000 s of polarization.

Freestanding and Sandwich MXene-Based Cathode with Suppressed Lithium Polysulfides Shuttle for Flexible Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Flexible lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with high mechanical compliance and energy density are highly desired. This manuscript reported that large-area freestanding MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) film has been obtained through a scalable drop-casting method, significantly improving adhesion to the sulfur layer under the continuously bent. Titanium oxide anchored on holey Ti₃C₂T_x (TiO₂/H-Ti₃C₂T_x) was also produced by the well-controlled oxidation of few-layer Ti₃C₂T_x, which greatly facilitates lithium ion transport as well as prevents the shuttling of lithium polysulfides. Therefore, the obtained sandwich electrode has demonstrated a high capacity of 740 mAh g^-1 at 2 C and a high capacity retention of 81% at 1 C after 500 cycles. Flexible Li-S batteries based on this sandwich electrode have a capacity retention as high as 95% after bending 500 times. This work provides effective design strategies of MXene for flexible batteries and wearable electronics.

Machine-Learning-Enabled Tricks of the Trade for Rapid Host Material Discovery in Li-S Battery

The shuttle effect has been a major obstacle to the development of lithium-sulfur batteries. The discovery of new host materials is essential, but lengthy and complex experimental studies are inefficient for the identification of potential host materials. We proposed a machine learning method for the rapid discovery of an AB₂-type sulfur host material to suppress the shuttle effect using the 2DMatPedia database, discovering 14 new structures (PdN₂, TaS₂, PtN₂, TaSe₂, AgCl₂, NbSe₂, TaTe₂, AgF₂, NiN₂, AuS₂, TmI₂, NbTe₂, NiBi₂, and AuBr₂) from 1320 AB₂-type compounds. These structures have strong adsorptions of greater than 1.0 eV for lithium polysulfides and appreciable electron-transportation capability, which can serve as the most promising AB₂-type host materials in lithium-sulfur batteries. On the basis of a small data set, we successfully predicted Li₂S₆ adsorption at arbitrary sites on substrate materials using transfer learning, with a considerably low mean absolute error (below 0.05 eV). The proposed data-driven method, as accurate as density functional theory calculations, significantly shortens the research cycle of screening AB₂-type sulfur host materials by approximately 8 years. This method provides high-precision and expeditious solutions for other high-throughput calculations and material screenings based on adsorption energy predictions.

Enriching Atomic Cobalt in an Ultrathin Porous Carbon Shell for Enhanced Electrocatalysis

Developing nonprecious electrocatalysts operating in acidic and alkaline media for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for sustainable energy technologies. Increasing the metal active site density is an effective strategy to enhance the activity, but it remains challenging because of metal sintering during pyrolysis. Here, we report a novel strategy of enriching atomically dispersed cobalt species in nitrogen-doped carbon for improving the electrocatalytic performance. A hollow carbon nanosphere with reduced shell thickness was obtained by taking advantage of the carbothermic reaction between carbon and ZnO template, and the resulting cobalt enrichment in the ultrathin carbon shell leads to an increase of the density of Co atoms. Together with advantageous microstructure features such as high surface area and multiscale porosity, the corresponding catalyst demonstrated promising oxygen reduction reaction performance in strong acidic and alkaline electrolytes and has two times higher kinetic current density than the nonenriched one. The present work provides an attractive and facile route to engineer active site in electrocatalysts.

A review of size engineering-enabled electrocatalysts for Li-S chemistry

Li-S batteries (LSBs) have received extensive attention owing to their remarkable theoretical capacity (1672 mA h g^-1) and high energy density (2600 W h kg^-1), which are far beyond those of the state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the retarded sulfur reaction kinetics and fatal shuttle effect have hindered the practical implementations of LSBs. In response, constructing electrocatalysts for Li-S systems has been considered an effective strategy to date. Particularly, size engineering-enabled electrocatalysts show high activity in the sulfur redox reaction, considerably contributing to the latest advances in Li-S system research. In this tutorial review, we provide a systematic summary of nano- to atomic-scale electrocatalysts employed in Li-S chemistry, aiming at figuring out the working mechanism of size engineering-enabled electrocatalysts in the sulfur redox reaction and guiding the rational construction of advanced LSBs toward practically viable applications.

Incorporating Cobalt Nanoparticles in Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Spheres through Composite Micelle Assembly for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have exhibited tremendous potential among the various secondary batteries benefitting from their large energy density, low expense, and enhanced security. However, the commercial use for Li-S batteries is immensely limited by the insulation of S, noticeable volume expansion from S to Li₂S₂/Li₂S, and the undesired shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPs). Herein, a composite sulfur host has been prepared by in situ incorporations of cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) into nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon spheres (Co/N-PCSs) through the composite micelle assembly strategy. The resultant functional Co/N-PCSs not only possess uniform spherical morphology with large open mesopores, high surface area, and pore volume but also have small Co NPs homogeneously inlaid into the pore walls of carbon frameworks. Both the experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the formed cobalt NPs can efficiently accelerate the lithium-ion diffusion reaction and greatly entrap the soluble intermediate LiPs. Benefiting from the well-designed structure, the Co/N-PCSs@S cathode with a S loading of 73.82 wt % delivers superior electrochemical performance, including long cycling stability (60% for the residual capacity at 1 A g^-1 within 300 cycles) and excellent rate performance (∼512 mAh g^-1 at 6 A g^-1). This design strategy of implanting metal NPs in mesoporous carbon can be inspiring in energy storage applications.

Mechanical Failure Mechanism of Silicon-Based Composite Anodes under Overdischarging Conditions Based on Finite Element Analysis

Overdischarge is a severe safety issue that can induce severe mechanical failure of electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries. A considerable volume change of silicon-based composite anodes undoubtedly further aggravates the mechanical failure. However, the mechanical failure mechanism of silicon-based composite anodes under overdischarging conditions still lacks in-depth understanding despite many efforts paid under normal charging conditions. Herein, we have modeled and tracked the mechanical failure evolution of silicon/carbon nanofibers, a typical silicon-based anode, under overdischarging conditions based on the finite element simulation, with derived optimization strategies of optimal Young's modulus and stable microstructure. The severe contact damage between silicon nanoparticles and carbon nanofibers, which causes larger shedding and breakage risks, has been found to contribute to mechanical failure. To improve the electrode stability, an optimal Young's modulus interval ranging from ∼75 to ∼150 GPa is found. Furthermore, increasing the embedding depth of silicon nanoparticles in carbon nanofibers has proven to be an effective strategy for improving electrochemical stability due to the faster lithium salt diffusion and more uniform current density distribution, which was further verified by the experimental capacity retention ratio of carbon-coated silicon and silicon/carbon nanofibers (84 vs 75% after 100 cycles). Our results provide meaningful insights into the mechanical failure of silicon-based composite anodes during overdischarging, giving reasonable guidance for electrode safety designs and performance optimization.

Bimetal CoNi Active Sites on Mesoporous Carbon Nanosheets to Kinetically Boost Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

In order to solve the problem that soluble polysulfide intermediates diffuse between cathode and anode during charging and discharging, which leads to rapid attenuation of battery cycle life, the separator modification materials come into people's sight. Herein, a mesoporous carbon-supported cobalt-nickel bimetal composite (CoNi@MPC) is synthesized and directly coated on the original separator to serve as a secondary collector for lithium-sulfur batteries. CoNi@MPC exhibits multiple Co-Ni active sites, able to catalyze the reactions of soluble polysulfides, specifically accelerating the generation and decomposition of insoluble Li₂ S in lithiation and delithiation process testified by the electrochemical results and density functional theory calculation. Relying on the bifunctionality of CoNi@MPC composite, the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides can be effectively alleviated. Moreover, porous carbon as the conductive scaffold favors the improvement of electronic conductivity. Benefiting from the above advantages, the cell with CoNi@MPC separator indicates significantly enhanced electrochemical performances with excellent cycling life over 500 cycles and superior rate capabilities.
