Anisotropic Angstrom-Wide Conductive Channels in Black Phosphorus by Top-down Cu Intercalation

Intercalation in 2D materials and in situ studies

Intercalation of atoms, ions and molecules is a powerful tool for altering or tuning the properties - interlayer interactions, in-plane bonding configurations, Fermi-level energies, electronic band structures and spin-orbit coupling - of 2D materials. Intercalation can induce property changes in materials related to photonics, electronics, optoelectronics, thermoelectricity, magnetism, catalysis and energy storage, unlocking or improving the potential of 2D materials in present and future applications. In situ imaging and spectroscopy technologies are used to visualize and trace intercalation processes. These techniques provide the opportunity for deciphering important and often elusive intercalation dynamics, chemomechanics and mechanisms, such as the intercalation pathways, reversibility, uniformity and speed. In this Review, we discuss intercalation in 2D materials, beginning with a brief introduction of the intercalation strategies, then we look into the atomic and intrinsic effects of intercalation, followed by an overview of their in situ studies, and finally provide our outlook.

Emerging Two-Dimensional Materials-Based Electrochemical Sensors for Human Health and Environment Applications

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have been vastly studied for various electrochemical sensors. Among these, the sensors that are directly related to human life and health are extremely important. Owing to their exclusive properties, 2DMs are vastly studied for electrochemical sensing. Here we have provided a selective overview of 2DMs-based electrochemical sensors that directly affect human life and health. We have explored graphene and its derivatives, transition metal dichalcogenide and MXenes-based electrochemical sensors for applications such as glucose detection in human blood, detection of nitrates and nitrites, and sensing of pesticides. We believe that the areas discussed here are extremely important and we have summarized the prominent reports on these significant areas together. We believe that our work will be able to provide guidelines for the evolution of electrochemical sensors in the future.

Gating Orbital Memory with an Atomic Donor

Orbital memory is defined by two stable valencies that can be electrically switched and read out. To explore the influence of an electric field on orbital memory, we studied the distance-dependent influence of an atomic Cu donor on the state favorability of an individual Co atom on black phosphorus. Using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we characterized the electronic properties of individual Cu donors, corroborating this behavior with ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. We studied the influence of an individual donor on the charging energy and stochastic behavior of an individual Co atom. We found a strong impact on the state favorability in the stochastic limit. These findings provide quantitative information about the influence of local electric fields on atomic orbital memory.
