Fire-Resistant and Hierarchically Structured Elastic Ceramic Nanofibrous Aerogels for Efficient Low-Frequency Noise Reduction

Preparation of Fibrous Three-Dimensional Porous Materials and Their Research Progress in the Field of Stealth Protection

Intelligent and diversified development of modern detection technology greatly affects the battlefield survivability of military targets, especially infrared, acoustic wave, and radar detection expose targets by capturing their unavoidable infrared radiation, acoustic wave, and electromagnetic wave information, greatly affecting their battlefield survival and penetration capabilities. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop stealth-protective materials that can suppress infrared radiation, reduce acoustic characteristics, and weaken electromagnetic signals. Fibrous three-dimensional porous materials, with their high porosity, excellent structural adjustability, and superior mechanical properties, possess strong potential for development in the field of stealth protection. This article introduced and reviewed the characteristics and development process of fibrous three-dimensional porous materials at both the micrometer and nanometer scales. Then, the process and characteristics of preparing fibrous three-dimensional porous materials through vacuum forming, gel solidification, freeze-casting, and impregnation stacking methods were analyzed and discussed. Meanwhile, their current application status in infrared, acoustic wave, and radar stealth fields was summarized and their existing problems and development trends in these areas from the perspectives of preparation processes and applicability were analyzed. Finally, several prospects for the current challenges faced by fibrous three-dimensional porous materials were proposed as follows: functionally modifying fibers to enhance their applicability through self-cross-linking; establishing theoretical models for the transmission of thermal energy, acoustic waves, and electromagnetic waves within fibrous porous materials; constructing fibrous porous materials resistant to impact, shear, and fracture to meet the needs of practical applications; developing multifunctional stealth fibrous porous materials to confer full-spectrum broadband stealth capability; and exploring the relationship between material size and mechanical properties as a basis for preparing large-scale samples that meet the application's requirement. This review is very timely and aims to focus researchers' attention on the importance and research progress of fibrous porous materials in the field of stealth protection, so as to solve the problems and challenges of fibrous porous materials in the field of stealth protection and to promote the further innovation of fibrous porous materials in terms of structure and function.

Fast Solution Blow Spinning of Lotus-Leaf-Inspired SiO2 Nanofiber Sponge for High Efficiency Purification

Massive production of SiO2 nanofibers with both high durability and exceptional performance remains a significant challenge. Herein, a novel approach was introduced to achieve the massive production of SiO2 nanofibers with lotus-leaf-inspired surfaces by combining solution blowing spinning (SBS) and the polymer-derived ceramics method. Based on the SBS technique, three types of precursor nanofiber products were fast spined with methyl silsesquioxane polymer and polymethyl hydrogen siloxane employed as Si sources. The flow rate of the SBS spined Si-based ceramic nanofibers was enhanced to 20 mL·h-1. Furthermore, through the integration of hydrophobic-oleophilic SiO2 nanoparticles into the precursor solution, SiO2 nanofibers with lotus-leaf nanoprotrusion surfaces were fabricated. Nanoparticle-decorated SiO2 fibers demonstrated excellent hydrophobicity (138.3°), compression resilience (∼60%), proficiency in organic pollutant adsorption, high-temperature resistance (∼1100 °C), and outstanding thermal insulation properties (thermal conductivity of 0.0165 W·(m·K)-1).

Preparation of multifunctional ceramic foams for sound absorption, waterproofing, and antibacterial applications

Using porous materials for sound absorption is an effective approach to alleviating noise pollution, although their hydrophilic properties potentially cause concerns regarding public safety and health risks. This work provides a facile strategy for establishing a multifunctional ceramic system by using sponges as the sintering template, adjusting the pore structure of ceramic foams by varying the ceramic slurry weights and fluorinating the sintered ceramic foams via hydrolysis and condensation processes to provide low surface energy. The obtained porous ceramic foams demonstrate sound-absorbing, waterproof, and antibacterial properties. The results reveal that the increase in ceramic slurry weight decreases the pore size and porosity due to the formation of more compact structures, and the decrease in porosity compromises the sound absorption performance. In the middle-range sound frequency, the maximum sound absorption coefficient reached 0.92. In addition, the fluorination of the rough ceramic surfaces endows the ceramic foams with waterproof properties, which enables them to float on water and display the silver mirror phenomenon. In addition, due to the waterproof property reducing the contact area between the ceramic surface and the bacterial suspension, as well as the lipophilic fluorine chain disrupting the bacterial structures, these ceramic foams exhibited antibacterial rates above 95%. In addition, the mechanisms underlying the sound-absorbing, waterproof, and antibacterial properties of these porous ceramic foams are elucidated. Therefore, this work provides a facile approach to developing a multifunctional ceramic system. Their practical features make these ceramic foams more significant in the field of noise reduction.

Improvement strategies for oil/water separation based on electrospun SiO2 nanofibers

Oil spills and oily effluents from industry and daily life pose a great threat to all organisms in the ecosystem, while aggravating the problem of water scarcity, which has developed into a global challenge. Therefore, the development of advanced materials and technologies for oil/water separation has become a focus of attention. One-dimensional (1D) SiO2 nanofibers (SNFs) have become one of the most widely used inorganic nanomaterials in the past due to their stable chemical properties, excellent biocompatibility, and high temperature resistance etc. Meanwhile, electrospinning technique, as an emerging technology for treating oil/water emulsions, electrospun SNFs on this basis also has a number of advantages such as adjustable wettability, diverse structure and good connectivity. This review provides a systematic overview of the research progress of electrospun SNFs in different aspects. In this review, we first introduce the basic principles of electrospun SNFs, then focus on the design structures of various SNFs, propose corresponding strategies for the property improvement of SNFs, also analyze and consider the applications of SNFs. Finally, the challenges faced by electrospun SNFs in the field of oil/water separation are analyzed, and the future directions of electrospun SNFs are summarized and prospected.

Heat-conducting elastic ultrafine fiber sponges with boron nitride networks for noise reduction

Industrial and traffic noise has become increasingly serious with the progress of industrialization. Most existing noise-absorbing materials suffer from poor heat dissipation and insufficient low-frequency (<1000 Hz) noise absorption, which not only reduces working efficiency but also leads to safety risks. Herein, heat-conducting elastic ultrafine fiber sponges with boron nitride (BN) networks were prepared by integrating direct electrospinning and impregnation method. The large acoustic contact area of ultrafine fibers and the vibration effect of BN nanosheets in a three-dimensional direction endow fiber sponges with good noise reduction, which can reduce white noise by 28.3 dB with a high noise reduction coefficient of 0.64. Moreover, thanks to good heat-conducting networks composed of BN nanosheets and porous structures, the obtained sponges exhibit superior heat dissipation with thermal conductivity of 0.159 W m-1 K-1. Besides, the introduction of elastic polyurethane and following crosslinking endow the sponges with good mechanical properties, which have almost no plastic deformation after 1000 compressions, and the tensile strength and strain are as high as 0.28 MPa and 75%. The successful synthesis of heat-conducting elastic ultrafine fiber sponges overcomes poor heat dissipation and low-frequency noise reduction of noise absorbers.

Direct Synthesis of Elastic and Stretchable Hierarchical Structured Fiber and Graphene-Based Sponges for Noise Reduction

Noise pollution, as one of the three major pollutants in the world, has become a great burden on people's health and the global economy. Most present noise absorbers suffer large weight and inevitable compromise between good low-frequency (usually <1000 Hz) and high-frequency (typically >1000 Hz) noise reduction performance. This study presents a scalable strategy to directly synthesize ultrafine fiber sponges with ultrathin graphene-based vibrators by the synchronous occurrence of humidity-assisted electrospinning and electrospraying. The unique physical entanglements between reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and ultrafine fibers endow hierarchical vibration structured fiber sponges (VSFSs) with excellent mechanical properties, which could withstand large shear strain (60%) and tensile stress (6000 times its weight) without damage and almost have no plastic deformation after 1000 compressions. Attribute to the vibration effect of ultrathin graphene-based vibrators and the viscous friction effect of porous fiber networks, the VSFSs achieve both good low-frequency (absorption coefficient of 0.98 in 680 Hz) and high-frequency sound absorption (absorption coefficients above 0.8 in 2000-6300 Hz) simultaneously. Furthermore, the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of lightweight VSFSs (thickness of 30 mm) reaches 0.63, which could reduce high decibel noise by 24.4 dB, providing potential solutions for developing ideal noise-absorbing materials.

Customizable Resilient Multifunctional Graphene Aerogels via Blend-spinning assisted Freeze Casting

Graphene aerogels have gained considerable attention due to their unique physical properties, but their poor mechanical properties and lack of functionality have hindered their advanced applications. In this study, we propose a blend-spinning-assisted freeze-casting (BSFC) strategy to incorporate particle-modified carbon fibers into graphene aerogels for mechanical strengthening and functional enhancement. This method offers a great deal of freedom in the creation of customizable multimaterial, multiscale structural graphene aerogels. For example, we fabricated silicon carbide particle modified carbon fiber reinforced graphene (SiC/CF-GA) aerogels. The resulting aerogels display excellent properties such as being ultralightweight and highly resilient and having fatigue compression resistance (1000 cycles at 50% strain). Meanwhile, enhanced resilience inspired the effective strain-sensing capabilities of SiC/CF-GA aerogels with a sensitivity of 13.8 kPa-1. The adjustable dielectric properties due to SiC particle incorporation endow the SiC/CF-GA aerogel with a broad-band (8.0 GHz) effective electromagnetic wave attenuation performance. Besides, different particles could be incorporated into graphene aerogels via the BSFC strategy, allowing for customizable designs. Moreover, multifunctionalities were demonstrated by the modified aerogels, including noise absorption, thermal insulation, fire resistance, and waterproofing, further diversifying their practicality. Hence, the BSFC strategy provides a customized solution for fabricating modified graphene aerogels for advanced functional applications.

Ultra-stretchable graphene aerogels at ultralow temperatures

Graphene aerogels (GAs) possess workable deformation and sensing properties at extreme temperatures. However, their poor tensile properties have restricted their applications in stretchable electronic devices, smart soft robots, and aerospace. Herein, an ultra-stretchable and elastic graphene aerogel with record elongation from -95% to 400% was achieved by constructing a highly crimped and crosslinked graphene network using a microbubble-filled GA precursor by a simple compress-annealing process. This conductive aerogel with near zero Poisson's ratio showed rubber-like but temperature-invariant elasticity from 196.5 °C to 300 °C, and special strain insensitivity from 50% to 400% tensile strain and high sensitivity below 50% tensile strain. Therefore, it can be used as a highly stretchable but strain-insensitive conductor under extreme environments, in which these polymer-based stretchable conductive materials are not workable. Moreover, this work provides new thoughts on constructing inorganic ultra-stretchable materials.

Elastic and compressible Al2O3/ZrO2/La2O3 nanofibrous membranes for firefighting protective clothing

Developing ceramic nanofibrous membranes for the thermal insulation layer of firefighting protective clothing is vital. However, previous ceramic nanofibrous membranes were brittle and easy to break during service in high-temperature environments. The lack of elastic and compressible properties has limited the high-end applications of ceramic nanofibrous membranes. In this work, elastic and compressible Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/La₂O₃ nanofibrous membranes were fabricated via sol-gel electrospinning and calcination in air at different temperatures. The as-fabricated Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/La₂O₃ nanofibrous membranes can maintain excellent elasticity and compressibility in the temperature ranging from -196 to 1400 °C. Moreover, they have low thermal conductivity and high working temperatures. These favorable characteristics make the Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/La₂O₃ nanofibrous membranes a promising candidate for the thermal insulation layer of firefighting protective clothing.

Ultra-Light and Ultra-Low Thermal Conductivity of Elastic Silica Nanofibrous Aerogel with TiO2 Opacifier Particles as Filler

The thermal radiation phenomenon is more crucial than other thermal transportation phenomena at elevated temperatures (>300 °C). Therefore, infrared radiation resistance and its performance on thermal conduction of nanofibrous aerogel with Titanium oxide (TiO2) filler have been investigated compared to control groups (silica nanofibrous aerogels with and without filler). Nanofibrous aerogel has been produced by electrospun silica nanofibers. Later, TiO2 opacifier and a non-opacifier filled materials were prepared by a solution homogenization method and then freeze-dried to obtain particle-filled nanofibrous aerogel. Moreover, the thermal radiation conductivity of the composite was calculated by numerical simulation, and the effect of the anti-infrared radiation of the TiO2 opacifier was obtained. The fascinating inhibited infrared radiation transmission performance (infrared transmittance ~67% at 3 μm) and excellent thermal insulation effect (thermal conductivity of 0.019 Wm−1K−1 at room temperature) and maximum compressive strengths (3.22 kPa) of silica nanofibrous aerogel with TiO2 opacifier were verified. Excellent thermal insulation, compression and thermal stability properties show its potential for practical application in industrial production. The successful synthesis of this material may shed light on the development of other insulative ceramic aerogels.

From 1D Nanofibers to 3D Nanofibrous Aerogels: A Marvellous Evolution of Electrospun SiO2 Nanofibers for Emerging Applications

One-dimensional (1D) SiO₂ nanofibers (SNFs), one of the most popular inorganic nanomaterials, have aroused widespread attention because of their excellent chemical stability, as well as unique optical and thermal characteristics. Electrospinning is a straightforward and versatile method to prepare 1D SNFs with programmable structures, manageable dimensions, and modifiable properties, which hold great potential in many cutting-edge applications including aerospace, nanodevice, and energy. In this review, substantial advances in the structural design, controllable synthesis, and multifunctional applications of electrospun SNFs are highlighted. We begin with a brief introduction to the fundamental principles, available raw materials, and typical apparatus of electrospun SNFs. We then discuss the strategies for preparing SNFs with diverse structures in detail, especially stressing the newly emerging three-dimensional SiO₂ nanofibrous aerogels. We continue with focus on major breakthroughs about brittleness-to-flexibility transition of SNFs and the means to achieve their mechanical reinforcement. In addition, we showcase recent applications enabled by electrospun SNFs, with particular emphasis on physical protection, health care and water treatment. In the end, we summarize this review and provide some perspectives on the future development direction of electrospun SNFs.
