Abstract
Conventional fog collection efficiency is subject to the inherent inefficiencies of its three constituent steps: fog capture, coalescence, and transportation. This study presents a liquid bridge synergistic fog collection system (LSFCS) by synergistically utilizing a liquid bridge and interconnected porous superhydrophilic structures (IPHS). The results indicate that the introduction of liquid bridge not only greatly accelerates water droplet transportation, but also facilitates the IPHS in maintaining rough structures that realize stable and efficient fog capture. During fog collection, the lower section of the IPHS is covered by a water layer, however due to the effect of the liquid bridge, the upper section protrudes out, while covered by a connective thin water film that does not obscure the microstructures of the upper section. Under these conditions, a one-step fog collection mode is realized. Once captured by the IPHS, fog droplets immediately coalesce with the water film, and are simultaneously transported into a container under the effect of the liquid bridge. The LSFCS achieves a collection efficiency of 6.5 kg m-2 h-1, 2.3 times that of a system without a liquid bridge. This study offers insight on improving fog collection efficiency, and holds promise for condensation water collection or droplet manipulation.

Abstract
The urgent need for sustainable energy storage drives the fast development of diverse hydrogen production based on clean water resources. Herein, a unique type of multi-bioinspired functional device (MFD) is reported with asymmetric wettability that combines the curvature gradient of cactus spines, the wetting gradient of lotus, and the slippery surface of Nepenthes alata for efficient fog harvesting. The precisely printed MFDs with microscale features, spanning dimensions, and a thin wall are endowed with asymmetric wettability to enable the Janus effects on their surfaces. Fog condenses on the superhydrophobic surface of the MFDs in the form of microdroplets and unidirectionally penetrates its interior due to the Janus effects, and drops onto the designated area with a better fog harvesting rate of 10.64 g cm-2 h-1. Most significantly, the collected clean water can be used for hydrogen production with excellent stability and durability. The findings demonstrate that safe, large-scale, high-performance water splitting and gas separation and collection with fog collection based on MFDs are possible.

Abstract
Biomimetic engineering surfaces featuring heterogeneous wettability are vital for atmospheric water harvesting applications. Existing research predominantly focuses on the coordinated regulation of surface wettability through structural and chemical modifications, often overlooking the prevalent triboelectric charge effect at the liquid-solid interface. In this work, we designed a heterogeneous wettability surface by strategic masking and activated its latent triboelectric charge using triboelectric brushes, thereby enhancing the removal and renewal of surface droplets. By examining the dynamic evolution of droplets, the mechanism of triboelectric enhancement in the water collection efficiency is elucidated. Leveraging this inherent triboelectric charge interaction, fog collection capacity can be augmented by 29% by activating the system for 5 s every 60 s. Consequently, the advancement of triboelectric charge-enhanced fog collection technology holds both theoretical and practical significance for overcoming the limitations of traditional surface wettability regulation.

Abstract
Water scarcity is a global problem and collecting water from the air is a viable solution to this crisis. Inspired by Namib Desert beetle, leaf venation and spider silk, we designed an integrated biomimetic system with hybrid wettability and wettability gradient. The hybrid hydrophilic-hydrophobic wettability design that bionomics desert beetle's back can construct a three-dimensional topography with a water layer on the surface, expanding the contact area with the fog flow and thus improving the droplet trapping efficiency. The venation-like structure with wettability gradient not only provides a planned path for water transportation, but also accelerates water removal under the synergistic effect of gravity and wettability driving force, thus further improving the surface regeneration rate. The collector combines droplet capture, coalescence, transportation, separation, and storage capabilities, which provides new ideas for the design of future high-efficiency fog collectors.

Abstract
Bio-inspired surfaces with wettability patterns display a unique ability for liquid manipulations. Sacrificing anti-wetting property for confining liquids irrespective of their surface tension (γLV), remains a widely accepted basis for developing wettability patterns. In contrast, we introduce a 'liquid-specific' wettability pattern through selectively sacrificing the slippery property against only low γLV (<30 mN m-1) liquids. This design includes a chemically reactive crystalline network of phase-transitioning polymer, which displays an effortless sliding of both low and high γLV liquids. Upon its strategic chemical modification, droplets of low γLV liquids fail to slide, rather spill arbitrarily on the tilted interface. In contrast, droplets of high γLV liquids continue to slide on the same modified interface. Interestingly, the phase-transition driven rearrangement of crystalline network allows to revert the slippery property against low γLV liquids. Here, we report a 'rewritable' and 'liquid-specific' wettability pattern for high throughput screening, separating, and remoulding non-aqueous liquids.

Abstract
Harvesting freshwater from fog is one of the possible solutions to the global water scarcity crisis. Surfaces with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions are extensively employed for this purpose. Nevertheless, the longevity of these surfaces is still constrained by their delicate surface structures. The hydrophilic zones may become damaged or contaminated after repeated use, thereby compromising their effectiveness in fog collection. The preparation of generally applicable durable superhydrophobic coatings with self-generated Wenzel sites is reported here for long-term efficient and stable fog collection. The coatings are prepared by depositing the poly(tannic acid) coating as the primer layer on various substrates, self-assembly of trichlorovinylsilane into staggered silicone nanofilaments, and then thiol-ene click reaction with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol. The coatings demonstrate remarkable static superhydrophobicity, robust impalement resistance, and stable self-generated Wenzel sites for water droplets. Therefore, the fog collection rate (FCR) of the coatings reaches 2.13 g cm-2 h-1 during 192 h continuous fog collection, which is triple that of bare substrate and outperforms most previous studies. Moreover, the systematic experiments and models have revealed that the key factors for achieving high FCR on superhydrophobic coatings are forming condensed droplets ≈1 mm in critical radius and a Wenzel site proportion of 0.3-0.4.

Abstract
Various methods to solve water scarcity have attracted increasing attention. However, most existing water harvesting schemes have a high demand for preparation methods and costs. Here, a multi-biomimetic double interlaced wetting Janus surface (DIWJS) was prepared by laser for effective fog collection. The as-prepared surfaces are composed of superhydrophilic points/hydrophobic substrates on the A-side and superhydrophilic stripes/hydrophobic substrates on the B-side. The interlaced wettability and superhydrophilic points on the A side are conducive to capture and permeation of droplets. The superhydrophilic stripes and interlaced wettability on the B-side are conducive to transportation and shedding of droplets. Therefore, the overall fog collection process is accelerated. The proposal of smart farm model validates broad application prospects of DIWJS. This work provides an advanced and multi-biomimetic surface and provides important insights for green, low-cost, and versatile strategies to solve water scarcity issues.

Abstract
A Gradient-Janus wire (GJW) with a diameter of 0.3 mm has been fabricated on a large scale through liquid confined modification, enabling the opposite conical wetting phenomenon along the same orientation of the GJW, characterized by an increasing superhydrophilic region and a decreasing hydrophobic region. This property allows the GJW to exhibit controllable water hovering, transport, and pinning during fog harvesting, i.e., at a large tilting angle α of 60° (mass increased with decreased α), the GJW can hover 0.6 mg of harvested fogwater in 30 s, can transport 3 mg of fogwater along the gradient in 30 s at α = 4° (with maximal mass reaching up to 4.3 mg at α = -10°), and finally, pin the water droplet at the end of the GJW. Such ability generates an effective torque that serves as the driving force for rotation. We designed a GJWs-wheel by radially arranging 60 GJWs together, resulting in an extremely lightweight structure weighing only 1.9 g. The cumulative torque generated during fog harvesting activates the rotation of the GJWs-wheel. When loaded with a coil within a magnetic field, electricity is generated as output power peaks at around 0.25 μW while maintaining a high water harvesting efficiency averaging approximately 38 ± 2.12 mg/min. This finding is significant as it provides valuable insights into designing materials capable of efficiently harnessing both energy and water resources.

Abstract
The increasing frequency of water scarcity is an acute worldwide problem. Nature-inspired water harvesting from fog is an important method to obtain freshwater in arid areas. Existing literature reports varied and diversified results in water harvesting capacity by employing a biphilic surface with control over hydrophilic and hydrophobic patterns. In this study, we first demonstrate a facile and scalable method to fabricate a biphilic surface using a simple electroless etching and desilanization technique. Considering the nucleation, growth, and transport of condensate, biphilic surfaces with controlled active surface area of hydrophilic spots were given special attention. We studied the water collection performance of pattern shape with its associated active surface area and further evaluated the critical surface area beyond which the water collection efficiency decreases. A high water collection capacity of 2050 mg cm-2 h-1 was achieved, and the hydrophilic active area-engineered surface retained its efficiency even after 50 test cycles. We further demonstrate high collection efficiency with a square pattern compared to a triangular path-like-patterned surface. The observations and surface engineering strategies reported in this study can provide insights into efficient and sustainable water harvesting devices.

Abstract
Fog harvesting is considered a promising freshwater collection strategy for overcoming water scarcity, because of its environmental friendliness and strong sustainability. Typically, fogging occurs briefly at night and in the early morning in most arid and semiarid regions. However, studies on water collection from short-term fog are scarce. Herein, we developed a patterned surface with highly hydrophilic interconnected microchannels on a superhydrophobic surface to improve droplet convergence driven by the Young-Laplace pressure difference. With a rationally designed surface structure, the optimized water collection rate from mild fog could reach up to 67.31 g m-2 h-1 (6.731 mg cm-2 h-1) in 6 h; this value was over 130% higher than that observed on the pristine surface. The patterned surface with interconnected microchannels significantly shortened the startup time, which was counted from the fog contact to the first droplet falling from the fog-harvesting surface. The patterned surface was also facilely prepared via a controllable strategy combining laser ablation and chemical vapor deposition. The results obtained in outdoor environments indicate that the rationally designed surface has the potential for short-term fog harvesting. This work can be considered as a meaningful attempt to address the practical issues encountered in fog-harvesting research.

Abstract
Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology is an emerging sustainable development strategy to deal with global water scarcity. To better understand the current state of AWH technology development, we conducted a bibliometric analysis highlighting three water harvesting technologies (fog harvesting, condensation, and sorption). By comprehensively reviewing the research progress and performing a comparative assessment of these technologies, we summarized past achievements and critically analyzed the different technologies. Traditional fog collectors are more mature, but their efficiency still needs to be improved. External field-driven fog harvesting and active condensation need to be driven by external forces, and passive condensation has high requirements for environmental humidity. Emerging bio-inspired fog harvesting and sorption technology provide new possibilities for atmospheric water collection, but they have high requirements for materials, and their commercial application is still to be further promoted. Based on the key characteristics of each technology, we presented the development prospects for the joint use of integrated/hybrid systems. Next, the water-energy relationship is used as a link to clarify the future development strategy of AWH technology in energy driving and conversion. Finally, we outlined the core ideas of AWH for both basic research and practical applications and described its limitless possibilities for drinking water supply and agricultural irrigation. This review provides an essential reference for the development and practical application of AWH technologies, which contribute to the sustainable utilization of water resources globally.

Abstract
Salt deposition and pollutant enrichment greatly hamper efficient and sustainable water production for a solar evaporator. Inspired by the desert beetle, a dual-region hydrophobic graphene/hydrophilic titanium dioxide (TiO2) aerogel (GTA) with internal hydrophilic-hydrophobic hybrid wettability structure is prepared via a facile freeze-drying and thermal reduction method. The evaporator shows adjustable wettability, optimized water content, and a low energy loss in the evaporation process. Simultaneously, the hybrid wetting structure in aerogel subjects salt to a dynamic crystallization-dissolution process to prevent salt deposition. The GTA solar evaporator achieves an evaporation rate of 1.52 kg·m-2·h-1 with a 91.02% efficiency under 1 sun irradiation. Furthermore, GTAs achieve a stable evaporation rate in high salinity brine (25 wt % NaCl) under 1 sun irradiation for 100 h, which could compete well with other most advanced photothermal evaporation materials. Moreover, the synergistic effect of graphene and TiO2 endows GTAs with excellent photocatalytic degradation and self-cleaning properties, which can effectively reduce the enrichment of contaminants on the evaporator. Therefore, GTA evaporators can efficiently and stably obtain clean water from seawater and wastewater, which provides a feasible strategy for the purification of complex wastewater.

Abstract
An approach of 'polymerization of monomers in its aggregated form' is unprecedentedly introduced to (i) tailor the water wettability of fibrous and porous substrates from hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity, and (ii) associate patterned wettability. A solution of selected monomers-i.e., alkyl acrylate in a good solvent (indicating high solubility; ethanol) was transferred into a bad solvent (refers to poor solubility; water) to achieve a stable dispersion of monomer aggregates of size <1 μm for deposition on fibrous and porous substrates. Its photopolymerization provided a durable coating with the ability to tailor the water wettability from 134° to 153°. Furthermore, a spatially selective photopolymerization process yielded a patterned interface of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. Such a facile chemical approach with the ability to provide a durable coating embedded with tailored and patterned wettability would be useful for various potential applications.

Abstract
By collecting water in the air, it is an important way to solve the problem of water shortage in arid and semi-arid areas. Improving the efficiency of fog harvesting is still a great challenge to be overcome. The use of 3D structure is an excellent strategy, here, a Multiple-biomimetic 3D hydrophilic and superhydrophobic fog harvester with a hump-valley structure was prepared by the combination of thermal processing and spraying. Inspired by biological water collection in nature, a 3D porous sponge surface with hydrophilic valley and superhydrophobic hump was obtained by two-step treatment. This surface structure showed excellent fog harvesting performance, which was 185 % higher than the original sponge. This structure accelerates the capture, transfer and transport of droplets during the fog harvesting process and greatly improves the efficiency of fog harvest. The results show that the chemical gradient and structural gradient actuation we constructed on the melamine sponge surface can effectively improve the fog collection efficiency. A surface with a linear hump-valley mixed wettability pattern is designed, and it is proved that fog collection efficiency can be effectively improved at the droplet capture and transfer stage and transport stage respectively. This study highlights a simple and cheap integrated fog harvester material design.

Abstract
Nature always uses its special wisdom to construct elegant and suitable schemes. Consequently, organisms in the flora and fauna are endowed with fine hierarchical structures (HS) to adapt to the harsh environment due to many years of evolution. Water is one of the most important resources; however, easy access to it is one the biggest challenges faced by human beings. In this case, fog collection (FC) is considered an efficient method to collect water, where bionic HS can be the bridge to efficiently facilitate the process of the FC. In this review, firstly, we discuss the basic principles of FC. Secondly, the role of HS in FC is analyzed in terms of the microstructure of typical examples of plants and animals. Simultaneously, the water-harvesting function of HS in a relatively new organism, fungal filament, is also presented. Thirdly, the HS design in each representative work is analyzed from a biomimetic perspective (single to multiple biomimetic approaches). The role of HS in FC, and then the FC performance of each work are analyzed in order of spatial dimension from a bionic perspective. Finally, the challenges at this stage and the outlook for the future are presented.

Abstract
The global water supply worsens yearly with climate change; therefore, the need for sustainable water resources is growing. One of them is fog water collectors with variable surface wettability, with multifunctional designs for utilization worldwide and to address regions with low humidity levels. Therefore, we created fiber meshes with a photoresponsive switchable surface. This study uses electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) meshes, whose wettability is controlled by adding TiO2. The fog water collection performance is studied at high and low humidity levels. With TiO2-PVDF, the electrospun mesh can be converted from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under UV irradiation and transformed back to a hydrophobic state with heat treatment. The switchable meshes were found to be more effective at water collection after UV irradiation at lower fog rates of 200 mL·h-1. The ability to switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties as needed is highly desired in fog collection applications using electrospun meshes, as it can improve overall efficiency after UV irradiation.

Abstract
Collecting water in fog has also become a breakthrough to solve the hidden danger of water shortage in some arid areas. The three-dimensional (3D) structure fog collection material can increase the surface area in direct contact with the fog flow and reduce the quick flow of fog, which can effectively improve the fog collection efficiency. Imitating the three-dimensional structure of corrugated paper, the 3D fog collecting material with hybrid wettability was prepared by chemical and physical means. We discuss the influence of different wettability combinations on the fog collection efficiency of 3D structures and study the influence of spraying times and illumination times on the surface wettability during the construction of wettability. We also study the influence of the concavity and tip as well as the bending angle on the fog collection in the 3D structure and obtain the most reasonable concavity and convex ratio and bending angle. The superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic 3D structure fog harvesting material prepared by us performs well in the fog harvesting process, and the fog harvesting efficiency reaches 1.442 g cm-2 h-1. The fog collection efficiency is 418% of the original zinc sheet. At the same time, compared with the superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic hybrid two-dimensional (2D) plane, the increase is 168%, and compared with the superhydrophobic 3D structure, the increase is 150%.

Abstract
Fog-harvesting performance is influenced by surface wettability, patterned structure and the heat transfer coefficient. In this work, we have prepared different surfaces with a stripe array of superhydrophilic, superslippery and superslippery/superhydrophilic surfaces for fog harvesting on silicon substrates using photolithography and silver-assisted chemical etching. The surface wettability and heat transfer coefficients of the above samples have been investigated. We analyzed the contact angle, sliding angle and transport state of droplets on these surfaces. The fog-harvesting rate of all samples under different voltages of the cooling pad (V = 0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 V) was measured. Results showed that the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface could achieve rapid droplet nucleation, directional transport and efficient collection due to its superhydrophilic striated channels and the Laplace pressure difference between different wettability regions. At a condensation voltage of 3.5 V, the fog-harvesting rate efficiencies of the uniformly striped superhydrophilic and superslippery surface were 1351 mg·cm-2·h-1 and 1265 mg·cm-2·h-1, respectively, while the fog-harvesting rate of the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface was 1748 mg·cm-2·h-1. Compared with the original silicon surface, the maximum fog-harvesting rate of the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface was improved by 86.9%. This study offers significant insights into the impact of heat transfer and silicon surface wettability on the process of fog collection.

Abstract
The scarcity of fresh water resources has become increasingly serious in recent years, posing threats to the survival of mankind. The ability of the animals and plants in arid areas to collect water from moisture and fog has drawn attention worldwide. Inspired by the synergistic fog harvesting mode of natural organisms with superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic patterning, a composite membrane with a concave-convex morphology and hybrid wettability was prepared aiming at efficient fog harvesting. The hybrid wettability surface was obtained by chemically modifying the superhydrophilic PAN substrate with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane using iron mesh as the mask. The porous PAN substrate was prepared by the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Fog harvesting is a three-step process: condensation, coalescence, and rapid transportation of water droplets. The area and ratio of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic regions were tuned by adjusting the mesh number of the iron meshes. Under the optimal condition, the fog harvesting efficiencies of 40.3 and 74.2 mg·cm-2·min-1 were obtained when the fog yields were 0.05 and 0.1 L·min-1, respectively. The present work provides an alternative strategy for addressing the shortage of fresh water resources.
