Microscopic Theory of Multimode Polariton Dispersion in Multilayered Materials

A near-resonant excitation strategy to achieve ultra-low threshold GaN polariton lasing

A near-resonant excitation strategy is proposed and implemented in a 4-µm-thick GaN microcavity to realize an exciton-polariton condensate/lasing with low threshold. Strong exciton-photon coupling is demonstrated, and polariton lasing is realized with an ultra-low threshold excitation power density of about 13.3 W/cm2 at room temperature. Such an ultra-low threshold is ascribed to the implementation of the near-resonant optical excitation strategy, which enables acceleration of the exciton and polariton relaxation and suppression of the heat generation in the cavity, thereby reducing the energy loss and enhance the cavity excitation efficiency.

Strong coupling-induced frequency shifts of highly detuned photonic modes in multimode cavities

Strong coupling between light and molecules is a fascinating topic exploring the implications of the hybridization of photonic and molecular states. For example, many recent experiments have explored the possibility that strong coupling of photonic and vibrational modes might modify chemical reaction rates. In these experiments, reactants are introduced into a planar cavity, and the vibrational mode of a chemical bond strongly couples to one of the many photonic modes supported by the cavity. Some experiments quantify reaction rates by tracking the spectral shift of higher-order cavity modes that are highly detuned from the vibrational mode of the reactant. Here, we show that the spectral position of these cavity modes, even though they are highly detuned, can still be influenced by strong coupling. We highlight the need to consider this strong coupling-induced frequency shift of cavity modes if one is to avoid underestimating cavity-induced reaction rate changes. We anticipate that our work will assist in the re-analysis of several high-profile results and has implications for the design of future strong coupling experiments.

Coherent state switching using vibrational polaritons in an asymmetric double-well potential

The quantum dynamics of vibrational polaritonic states arising from the interaction of a bistable molecule with the quantized mode of a Fabry-Perot microcavity is investigated using a generic asymmetric double-well potential as a simplified one-dimensional model of a reactive molecule. After discussing the role of the light-matter coupling strength in the emergence of avoided crossings between polaritonic states, we investigate the possibility of using these crossings to trigger a dynamical switching of these states from one potential well to the other. Two schemes are proposed to achieve this coherent state switching, either by preparing the molecule in an appropriate vibrational excited state before inserting it into the cavity, or by applying a short laser pulse inside the cavity to obtain a coherent superposition of polaritonic states. The respective influences of dipole moment amplitude and potential asymmetry on the coherent switching process are also discussed.

Variational Lang-Firsov Approach Plus Møller-Plesset Perturbation Theory with Applications to Ab Initio Polariton Chemistry

We apply the Lang-Firsov (LF) transformation to electron-boson coupled Hamiltonians and variationally optimize the transformation parameters and molecular orbital coefficients to determine the ground state. Møller-Plesset (MP-n, with n = 2 and 4) perturbation theory is then applied on top of the optimized LF mean-field state to improve the description of electron-electron and electron-boson correlations. The method (LF-MP) is applied to several electron-boson coupled systems, including the Hubbard-Holstein model, diatomic molecule dissociation (H2, HF), and the modification of proton transfer reactions (malonaldehyde and aminopropenal) via the formation of polaritons in an optical cavity. We show that with a correction for the electron-electron correlation, the method gives quantitatively accurate energies comparable to that by exact diagonalization or coupled-cluster theory. The effects of multiple photon modes, spin polarization, and the comparison to the coherent state MP theory are also discussed.

Exploring the nature of high-order cavity polaritons under the coupling-decoupling transition

Recently, we predicted theoretically that in cavities that support several longitudinal modes, strong coupling can occur in very different manners, depending on the system parameters. Distinct longitudinal cavity modes are either entangled with each other via the material or independently coupled to the exciton mode. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the transition between those two regimes as the cavity thickness is gradually increased while maintaining fixed coupling strength. We study the properties of the system using reflection and emission spectroscopy and show that even though the coupling strength is constant, different behavior in the spectral response is observed along the coupling-decoupling transition. In addition, we find that in such multimode cavities, pronounced upper polariton emission is observed, in contrast to the usual case of a single-mode cavity. Furthermore, we address the ultrafast dynamics of the multimode cavities by pump-probe spectroscopic measurements and observe that the transient spectra significantly change through the transition.

Theoretical Advances in Polariton Chemistry and Molecular Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

When molecules are coupled to an optical cavity, new light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons, are formed due to quantum light-matter interactions. With the experimental demonstrations of modifying chemical reactivities by forming polaritons under strong light-matter interactions, theorists have been encouraged to develop new methods to simulate these systems and discover new strategies to tune and control reactions. This review summarizes some of these exciting theoretical advances in polariton chemistry, in methods ranging from the fundamental framework to computational techniques and applications spanning from photochemistry to vibrational strong coupling. Even though the theory of quantum light-matter interactions goes back to the midtwentieth century, the gaps in the knowledge of molecular quantum electrodynamics (QED) have only recently been filled. We review recent advances made in resolving gauge ambiguities, the correct form of different QED Hamiltonians under different gauges, and their connections to various quantum optics models. Then, we review recently developed ab initio QED approaches which can accurately describe polariton states in a realistic molecule-cavity hybrid system. We then discuss applications using these method advancements. We review advancements in polariton photochemistry where the cavity is made resonant to electronic transitions to control molecular nonadiabatic excited state dynamics and enable new photochemical reactivities. When the cavity resonance is tuned to the molecular vibrations instead, ground-state chemical reaction modifications have been demonstrated experimentally, though its mechanistic principle remains unclear. We present some recent theoretical progress in resolving this mystery. Finally, we review the recent advances in understanding the collective coupling regime between light and matter, where many molecules can collectively couple to a single cavity mode or many cavity modes. We also lay out the current challenges in theory to explain the observed experimental results. We hope that this review will serve as a useful document for anyone who wants to become familiar with the context of polariton chemistry and molecular cavity QED and thus significantly benefit the entire community.

Theory for Cavity-Modified Ground-State Reactivities via Electron-Photon Interactions

We provide a simple and intuitive theory to explain how coupling a molecule to an optical cavity can modify ground-state chemical reactivity by exploiting intrinsic quantum behaviors of light-matter interactions. Using the recently developed polarized Fock states representation, we demonstrate that the change of the ground-state potential is achieved due to the scaling of diabatic electronic couplings with the overlap of the polarized Fock states. Our theory predicts that for a proton-transfer model system, the ground-state barrier height can be modified through light-matter interactions when the cavity frequency is in the electronic excitation range. Our simple theory explains several recent computational investigations that discovered the same effect. We further demonstrate that under the deep strong coupling limit of the light and matter, the polaritonic ground and first excited eigenstates become the Mulliken-Hush diabatic states, which are the eigenstates of the dipole operator. This work provides a simple but powerful theoretical framework to understand how strong coupling between the molecule and the cavity can modify ground-state reactivities.

Theoretical Analysis of Exciton Wave Packet Dynamics in Polaritonic Wires

We present a comprehensive study of the exciton wave packet evolution in disordered lossless polaritonic wires. Our simulations reveal signatures of ballistic, diffusive, and subdiffusive exciton dynamics under strong light-matter coupling and identify the typical time scales associated with the transitions between these qualitatively distinct transport phenomena. We determine optimal truncations of the matter and radiation subsystems required for generating reliable time-dependent data from computational simulations at an affordable cost. The time evolution of the photonic part of the wave function reveals that many cavity modes contribute to the dynamics in a nontrivial fashion. Hence, a sizable number of photon modes is needed to describe exciton propagation with a reasonable accuracy. We find and discuss an intriguingly common lack of dominance of the photon mode on resonance with matter in both the presence and absence of disorder. We discuss the implications of our investigations for the development of theoretical models and analysis of experiments where coherent intermolecular energy transport and static disorder play an important role.
